The school board must also accept it, but the union decided that lessons could continue\u200d while those votes were taking place.<\/p>\n<p>Students at Portland Public Schools (PPS) \u200dmissed eleven days of classes prior to the district\u2019s start of a week-long Thanksgiving break.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cWe\u200c are relieved to have our students returning\u2063 to school and know that being out of school for the last three weeks\u2014missing classmates, teachers, and learning\u2014has \u2062been hard \u2063for everyone,\u201d said Superintendent Guadalupe Guerrero.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The teachers union claimed that in terms of classroom size, teacher pay, health, safety, and mental health resources for kids affected by the epidemic, the provisional agreement was a significant victory for both educators and pupils. <\/p>\n<p>By adding days to the new year and removing\u2064 one week from winter vacation, students will make up for lost school days.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThis contract is a watershed moment for Portland students, families, and educators,\u201d Portland Teachers Association President Angela Bonilla said. \u201cEducators have secured improvements on all\u200d our key issues\u2026 Educators walked picket lines alongside families, students, \u200band allies, and because of that, our\u2063 schools are getting the added investment they need.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>According \u2063to PPS, the agreement would provide teachers\u200d with \u200da \u200c13.8% cumulative cost-of-living raise over the following three years, and almost half of all teachers would get an additional 10.6% in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/roughly-45000-students-to-return-to-school-in-oregon-after-nearly-month-long-teacher-strike\/\" title=\"Around 45,000 students in Oregon are set to go back to school following a nearly month-long teacher strike\">yearly step increases<\/a>. According to Oregon Public Broadcasting, one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/44-san-francisco-schools-to-see-name-changes\/\" title=\"44 San Francisco schools to see name changes\">school board member<\/a> even had posters affixed \u200cto his car, while another had vandalism \u2064on his rental\u200c property.<\/p>\n<p>According to \u200cthe\u2063 Portland Association\u2064 of Teachers, which advocates for over 4,000 educators, this was the district\u2019s first teachers\u2019 strike.<\/p>\n<p>After its previous contract ended in June, the union and the district engaged in months of negotiations in\u200b order to decide on a new one.<\/p>\n<p>Growing class\u200d numbers, a lack of preparation and support time in the classroom, and pay that \u200dhas not kept up with inflation reportedly infuriated teachers. In the district, the starting basic pay is around $50,000 per year.<\/p>\n<p>However, Portland Public Schools has consistently stated that \u200cit \u200clacks the funds to comply with the union\u2019s demands.<\/p>\n<p>School district leaders said that the record $10.2 billion K\u201312 budget that Oregon lawmakers adopted in June was insufficient.
