Preteens Not Supposed to be on Instagram: Unsealed Lawsuit Complaint<\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<p>An unsealed lawsuit\u200c claims that Meta was well aware that it had legions of Instagram users \u2064under the supposed minimum age of 13.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cTweens want access to Instagram, and they lie about their age to get \u200dit now,\u201d <strong>Adam Mosseri<\/strong>, the head of Instagram, said in an internal\u2064 company chat in November 2021, according\u2063 to the <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.cand.419868\/gov.uscourts.cand.419868.73.2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lawsuit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to \u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/11\/25\/technology\/instagram-meta-children-privacy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Times<\/a>,\u200d a month after making that statement, \u200dMosseri told a Senate panel, \u201cIf a\u2063 child is under the age \u200dof 13, \u2062they are not permitted\u200b on Instagram.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit was initially filed with the evidence against Meta redacted but an updated complaint was released last week, the Times reported.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit, filed Oct. 24 in \u200cU.S. District Court for the Northern District of California by the attorney generals of 33 states, \u200dsaid Meta has known for years that it \u2062had \u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/mobile-games-targeting-kids-lawsuit-alleges-company-preys-children-illegal-gambling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">users<\/a> below the age of 13 and was proud of\u200c that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithin the company, Meta\u2019s actual knowledge that millions of Instagram users are under \u200bthe age of 13 is an open secret that is routinely documented, rigorously analyzed and confirmed and zealously protected from disclosure to the public,\u201d the complaint said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite its public-facing claims that users under the age of 13 are \u200cnot allowed on Instagram, including\u2063 in congressional testimony provided by Meta executive Davis in\u2064 September 2021, Meta\u2019s \u200bprivate internal\u2062 documents reveal that \u2063Meta has coveted and pursued the under-13 Instagram user demographic for years,\u201d the lawsuit said, referring to September 2021 \u2064testimony \u2063by Meta executive Antigone Davis.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit\u200d quotes what it said\u200b was \u201can internal Meta document from 2018\u201d that said, \u201c[W]e do very \u2064little to keep U13s off our platform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It said a chart used to measure Instagram\u2019s \u201cMonthly Active People Penetration\u201d showed 20 to 60 percent penetration in the 11-\u2062 to 13-year-old age range.<\/p>\n<p>Meta \u201ccan estimate that there were 4M[illion] people under 13 in \u200d2015 on IG [in the US]. This represents around 30% of all 10-12 year[] old[s] in the US,\u201d the lawsuit quoted\u2064 a Meta document as saying.<\/p>\n<p>It quoted an internal email from 2018 as saying, \u201cThe lifetime value of a 13 y\/o teen is roughly $270 per teen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit said the company\u200b did <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/zuckerberg-ignored-top-executives-calling-increased-safety-plans-kids-unredacted-lawsuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">not want to know<\/a> if users were under 13.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeta has a policy of automatically ignoring certain \u200bexternal reports that Instagram users are under 13 years old. After\u200b Meta receives a report that an Instagram user is under 13 years old, Meta\u2019s policy is to allow the\u200d user to continue\u200c using their Instagram account\u200d and disregard the report if \u2063the account does\u200c not contain a user \u200cbio or photos,\u201d the lawsuit said.<\/p>\n<p>It said Meta knew that \u200cbetween 2019 and 2023, more than 1.1 million Instagram users were under 13, but the platform disabled the accounts of \u201conly a fraction\u201d of them.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit said Meta possessed a survey\u2064 that showed out of 3,983 children responding, 22 percent of kids between 6 to 9 and 35 \u200dpercent\u200c of those between 10 and 12 used Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>In an opinion piece Saturday in the \u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/11\/25\/opinion\/meta-wouldnt-risk-1-revenue-cut-to-keep-teens-from-harm\/?utm_source=ground.news&#038;utm_medium=referral\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Post,<\/a> Rikki\u2062 Schlott wrote that \u201cInstagram has\u2064 devastated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/house-democrats-block-ashley-hinson-bill-to-reopen-schools-with-in-person-learning\/\" title=\"House Democrats Block Ashley Hinson Bill to Reopen Schools with In-Person Learning\">youth mental health<\/a> \u2014 and, \u2063according to \u200d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ntd-evening-news-full-broadcast-sept-15\/\" title=\"NTD Evening News: Sept. 15 Broadcast\">newly unsealed court filings<\/a>, its parent \u200dcompany \u200bMeta knew exactly\u200b what they were doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said the $270 lifetime value the lawsuit \u200dsaid \u2064Meta put on a 13-year-old user was a global \u2064average, writing that \u201cAmerican teens are 10 times more valuable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In picking through the vast haul of internal Meta data revealed \u2063in the lawsuit, Schlott emphasized that \u201cMeta\u2019s own data also revealed a third of teen girls say Instagram makes their body image\u200d worse, \u200cand that 17% said it worsened eating issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s time the truth comes out,\u201d she wrote. \u201cAnd, \u2064as \u2063a Gen\u200d Zer who has been on social media since my tween years, I\u2019m heartened to see a bipartisan coalition of nearly every attorney general in the United States banding together \u2062in defense of youth mental health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompanies \u2063like Meta who \u200dare knowingly perpetuating suffering need\u2063 to \u2064be held to account \u2014\u2063 not just for the teens they\u2019ve harmed\u200c but also for the next generation who might be spared the same fate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>States in the\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/zuckerbergs-meta-sued-33-states-targeting-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lawsuit<\/a> against Meta were Arizona, \u200cCalifornia, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, \u2063Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan,\u200c Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska,\u200b New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Virginia, Washington, West\u200b Virginia \u2064and Wisconsin, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/oag.ca.gov\/news\/press-releases\/attorney-general-bonta-files-lawsuit-against-meta-over-harms-youth-mental-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news release<\/a> from California Attorney General Rob Bonta.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur bipartisan investigation has arrived at a solemn conclusion: Meta has been harming our children and teens, cultivating addiction to boost corporate profits,\u201d \u2064Bonta \u2064said in a statement.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h3>A Note from Our Founder:<\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em><b>Silicon Valley and the Big Tech tyrants have done everything they can to put The Western Journal out of business.
