The foundation is a nonprofit with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chcf.org\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stated mission<\/a> of improving the health care system for Californians &#8220;with low incomes and those whose needs are not well served by the status quo.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"posts-content__category-widget md:hidden -ml-4 -mr-4 my-8 px-4 py-6 bg-gray-100\">\n<h4 class=\"mt-0 text-red-600 font-medium font-sans uppercase\">Recent Stories in Biden Administration<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<p>The foundation stands to benefit from a Department of Health and Human Services charged with expanding the Affordable Care Act&#8217;s health care policy. Individuals associated with the nonprofit increased their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/orgs\/california-health-care-foundation\/totals?id=D000064573\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">political donations<\/a> significantly in 2020, contributing nearly $52,000 to elect Democratic candidates. The foundation has pushed several articles touting the benefits of the act and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chcf.org\/blog\/this-legal-attack-aca-could-be-big-one\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">described<\/a> the consequences of potentially overturning the law as &#8220;severe.&#8221; A news service run by the nonprofit also published an article in December promoting Becerra&#8217;s nomination without disclosing Reyes&#8217;s position on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chcf.org\/about\/board-of-directors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">board of directors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;President-elect Joe Biden has tapped California Attorney General Xavier Becerra to lead the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services,&#8221; the <a href=\"https:\/\/californiahealthline.org\/news\/article\/xavier-becerra-in-his-own-words-health-care-is-a-right\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> said. &#8220;Becerra, who would be the nation\u2019s first Latino HHS secretary, has taken some ground-breaking positions on health care, especially since he became attorney general in 2017.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He has sued the Trump administration dozens of times on health care, birth control, immigration, climate change and more, with California leading the defense of the Affordable Care Act before the U.S. Supreme Court,&#8221; it continued. &#8220;Becerra has also won a major legal settlement from Sutter Health after accusing the nonprofit health care giant of using its market dominance in Northern California to illegally drive up prices.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The foundation did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chcf.org\/press-release\/reyes-to-join-california-health-care-foundation-board-of-directors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> that Reyes joined the board in May 2017. The press release mentioned Reyes&#8217;s marriage to Becerra, who at the time had just become California&#8217;s attorney general. She collected $30,000 from the organization in the 2018 fiscal year, according to the group&#8217;s most recent IRS <a href=\"https:\/\/pdf.guidestar.org\/PDF_Images\/2019\/954\/523\/2019-954523231-17355069-9O.pdf?_gl=1*1i39o5e*_ga*MTQwODkwNzE2OS4xNjE0OTY4Mjg1*_ga_0H865XH5JK*MTYxNDk2ODI4NS4xLjEuMTYxNDk2ODMwNy4w*_ga_5W8PXYYGBX*MTYxNDk2ODI4NS4xLjEuMTYxNDk2ODMwNy4w&amp;_ga=2.201085614.1438066946.1614968285-1408907169.1614968285\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">filings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Becerra did not respond to a request for comment on whether Carolina would step down from the board if he is confirmed. The Biden White House also did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The vote on Becerra&#8217;s nomination is expected to occur in the next week after two contentious Senate hearings.
