Kennedy had lived?<\/p>\n<p>What if the assassin\u2019s bullet had gone\u200c wide or inflicted only non-life-threatening wounds?<\/p>\n<p>How would the rest of the 1960s \u2014 or, for that matter, the\u2064 rest of the century \u2014 be different?<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday marks \u200dthe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jfklibrary.org\/about-us\/news-and-press\/press-releases\/jfk-library-remembers-60th-anniversary-of-president-kennedys-death\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">60th anniversary<\/a> of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/secret-service-agent-feet-jfk-assassination-breaks-silence-says-official-story-isnt-right\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Kennedy\u2019s assassination<\/a> in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963.<\/p>\n<p>It happened\u2062 at a time when\u2063 American power was at a post-World War II\u200c zenith, and what followed \u200buntil Ronald Reagan became president in the \u20621980s\u2063 were rocky times for the world\u2019s beacon of freedom.<\/p>\n<p>Think of what defined the failed\u200b presidencies after JFK: Lyndon Johnson, Vietnam War; Richard Nixon,\u2062 Watergate; Gerald Ford, a\u2063 placeholder who lost in 1976; and Jimmy\u2062 Carter, stagflation and the Iran hostage crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy enjoyed the trust \u200bof the American people, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/116677\/presidential-approval-ratings-gallup-historical-statistics-trends.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">70 percent approval rating<\/a> while in office,\u200c the highest of any post-World War II president,\u200d including\u2062 Dwight Eisenhower at 65 \u2064percent.<\/p>\n<p>He overcame\u2062 the failure of the\u2063 Bay of Pigs invasion by successfully navigating the country through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/russia-warns-new-cuban-missile-crisis-powerful-warship-docks-cuba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cuban missile crisis<\/a>. He was also on\u200d the right \u2064side of history regarding\u200d civil rights.<\/p>\n<p>Following his tragic death, interest in\u200c the 35th president and his\u200b brief, shining \u201cCamelot\u201d administration remained strong.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">November 22 marks the 60th anniversary of President John F. AP photographer James \u201cIke\u201d Altgens was near\u200c the\u2064 president, and relayed the \u2062news to Dallas bureau chief Bob Johnson,\u200c who\u200c filed the first\u2062 AP news\u2064 bulletin on the shooting. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/DE2FEzbBHb\">https:\/\/t.co\/DE2FEzbBHb<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9I7Kf1pKKx\">pic.twitter.com\/9I7Kf1pKKx<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014\u200b AP Images \u200c(@AP_Images) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AP_Images\/status\/1725878308452077975?\">November 18, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Kennedy administration was very much in the American psyche\u2063 in\u200c the 1980s.<\/p>\n<p>Actor Martin Sheen played JFK in a \u200cvery popular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Kennedy-Complete-Martin-Sheen\/dp\/B001KGDNAW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NBC miniseries<\/a> titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0085044\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kennedy<\/a>\u201d in November \u200d1983 that marked the 20th \u200banniversary of his assassination.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2016\/09\/09\/the-secret-link-between-jfk-and-ronald-reagan-and-why-it-matters-now-commentary.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quoted Kennedy<\/a> often while seeking to pass historic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/dems-forgotten-lessons-reagan-jfk-taught-taxing-corporations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tax cuts<\/a> and on other occasions.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the principal players of the Kennedy era were still among us at the time, including former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy; their\u200b two children, Caroline and John Jr.; JFK\u2019s brother Ted Kennedy; \u200dand\u2062 various members \u2064of\u200d Camelot\u2019s round \u200btable, including\u2062 aides Ted Sorensen, Arthur Schlesinger Jr. and Larry O\u2019Brien, former Secretary of Defense Robert \u200cMcNamara, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of\u2062 Staff Gen.\u2063 Maxwell Taylor, and press secretary Pierre \u2062Salinger.<\/p>\n<p>Of these, only Caroline\u2063 remains.<\/p>\n<p>Looking back\u2063 at the assassination, perhaps the biggest \u201cwhat if Kennedy\u200b had lived\u201d question is whether \u200bhe \u200bwould have pulled the U.S. out of the Vietnam War. It would have\u200c meant saving more than<a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/research\/military\/vietnam-war\/casualty-statistics#:~:text=April%2029%2C%202008.-,The%20Vietnam%20Conflict%20Extract%20Data%20File%20of%20the%20Defense%20Casualty,casualties%20of%20the%20Vietnam%20War.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> 58,000 American lives<\/a> lost in battle and\u2062 spared the \u2063country of much domestic strife and disillusionment with the federal government over its prosecution of \u200bthe war.<\/p>\n<p>When Kennedy died, there were about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jfklibrary.org\/learn\/education\/teachers\/curricular-resources\/jfk-and-vietnam-the-september-1963-tv-interviews#:~:text=In%20the%20final%20weeks%20of,military%20advisors%20in%20South%20Vietnam.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">16,000\u2064 military advisers<\/a> and other support personnel in South Vietnam.<\/p>\n<p>In October 1963, JFK made up his \u200bmind to withdraw 1,000\u2064 advisers by the end \u200bof that year, and\u200d the reduction\u200c did\u2062 happen. But it became like an \u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/millercenter.org\/Kennedy-withdrawal\/lbj-questioned-withdrawal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accounting\u200d exercise<\/a> when more troops quickly flowed \u2062back into Vietnam in the \u200cmonths that followed.<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy\u2019s successor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/biden-calls-return-failed-1960s-great-society-reportedly-eyeing-major-tax-hikes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lyndon\u2063 Johnson<\/a>, oversaw a massive buildup that \u2064reached more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalhistory.uh.edu\/disp_textbook.cfm?smtID=11&#038;psid=3844\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">536,000<\/a> U.S. troops in \u200ccountry by 1968.<\/p>\n<p>I \u200bwas able to interview former Kennedy administration Defense Department official William Bundy in the late 1980s for a paper \u200cI was writing as a West Point cadet. I asked whether JFK would\u200c have pulled out\u200b of Vietnam \u200din a second term.<\/p>\n<p>After speaking with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-2000-oct-08-me-33422-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bundy<\/a> \u2014 who served as deputy assistant secretary of defense for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-picks-next-pentagon-policy-chief-amid-tuberville-hold\/\" title=\"Biden selects new Pentagon policy chief despite Tuberville's hold.\">international security \u2063affairs<\/a> under JFK and assistant secretary of state for East Asian affairs under Johnson \u2014 \u200band conducting further research in the Pentagon Papers and other sources, I\u200b concluded that Kennedy\u2019s withdrawal of U.S. \u200ctroops from Vietnam was going\u200d to be contingent on continued success in the war effort by the South Vietnamese.<\/p>\n<p>Would \u2063he have gotten the U.S. \u200cas \u2064deeply involved as Johnson did? It \u200dseems\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/americandiplomacy.web.unc.edu\/2020\/11\/without-dallas-john-f-kennedy-and-the-vietnam-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unlikely<\/a> given his skepticism toward the military brass, but it\u2019s not out of the question.<\/p>\n<p>In a\u2063 September 1963 interview with CBS \u2062News anchor\u2063 Walter\u200d Cronkite, Kennedy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jfklibrary.org\/learn\/about-jfk\/jfk-in-history\/vietnam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>, \u201cIn the final analysis, it\u2019s their war. They are \u2064the ones\u200b who have to\u200c win it or lose it. We can \u2064help them, \u2062we can give them equipment, we can send our \u2063men out there as advisers, but they have\u2062 to win it, the people of Vietnam, \u200bagainst the Communists. We\u2019re prepared to continue to assist them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added,\u200c \u201cBut these\u200b people who \u200dsay that we ought\u2063 to withdraw from Vietnam are wholly \u200bwrong,\u200b because\u200c if we withdrew from Vietnam, the communists would\u200b control Vietnam. Pretty soon, Thailand, \u2064Cambodia, Laos, Malaya would go \u200dand all of southeast Asia would be under the control of the communists and under the\u2062 domination of the Chinese.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So the president articulated the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/cold-war\/domino-theory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Domino Theory<\/a>\u201d of the\u2064 time: If one country goes,\u2062 they all will go.<\/p>\n<div class=\"firefly-embed\">\n<\/div>\n<p>But Kennedy emphasized again, \u201cThey\u2019re the ones\u200b who have to win this war or they are the\u2063 ones who will\u200b lose\u200d it. We can\u2019t do either. We can assist them to win it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former \u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/son-bidens-political-hero-robert-f-kennedy-launches-campaign-unseat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert F. Kennedy<\/a> \u2062 speechwriter \u200dJeff Greenfield, in his 2013 book \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/If-Kennedy-Lived-President-Alternate\/dp\/0399166963\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">If Kennedy Lived<\/a>,\u201d noted\u2062 the 35th president had too \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alternatehistory.com\/forum\/threads\/upcoming-ah-books.141005\/page-11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">finely honed political instincts<\/a>\u201d to get out of Vietnam before the 1964 election, even if he wanted to.<\/p>\n<p>JFK\u200c knew Republicans \u200bwould accuse \u200chim of losing Vietnam to the Communists, just as \u2062they accused former President Harry Truman of the\u200d same with China\u200b in 1949.<\/p>\n<p>During \u200cthe Cronkite interview, Kennedy discussed other priorities of a\u2064 second term.<\/p>\n<p>They included expanding civil rights and getting \u200cthe nation\u2019s economy\u200b to grow strongly again.<\/p>\n<p>Black people \u201care given the promises of the Constitution, and we have to do\u200d what we can to \u200dsee that\u2064 those\u2062 promises are carried out,\u201d Kennedy \u2063said. \u201cThat\u2019s the responsibility, it seems to me, of this generation of Americans, North and South, East and West, even those it presents\u2062 us with a good many \u200bharassments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the summer of 1963, he proposed civil rights legislation \u201cthat\u200b would address voting rights, public accommodations, school desegregation, nondiscrimination in federally\u2063 assisted programs and\u200b more,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/milestone-documents\/civil-rights-act#:~:text=Despite%20Kennedy's%20assassination%20in%20November,theaters%2C%20restaurants%2C%20and%20hotels.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Archives<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In July 1964, Johnson signed \u200cthe Civil Rights Act\u2062 into law, followed by the\u2062 Voting\u200c Rights Act in 1965.<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy identified that another top issue for the 1964\u2064 election would be the \u201cvigor of \u2062the American economy,\u201d\u200b and he had proposed across-the-board tax cuts for individuals and corporations to \u2064get it moving again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe\u2063 billions of dollars this bill will place in the hands of \u200cthe\u200b consumer and our \u2062businessmen\u200b will have \u2064both immediate and permanent\u2064 benefits \u200dto our economy,\u201d JFK said in August 1962 when promoting the plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery dollar released from taxation that is spent or invested will help create a\u200d new job and a new salary,\u201d Kennedy continued. \u201cAnd \u2063these new jobs and new salaries \u2063can create other\u200b jobs and \u2064other salaries and more customers and more growth\u2062 for an expanding \u2062American economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal must be full capacity and full employment and the budgetary surpluses that that kind of employment and\u2062 capacity can produce,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"firefly-embed\">\n<\/div>\n<p>Kennedy\u2019s \u2063prediction about the efficacy of \u200btax cuts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/nancy-pelosi-says-tax-cuts-never-create-jobs-both-jfk-and-reagan-prove-she-is-wrong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proved true<\/a>. After his \u2063plan was \u2064adopted in\u200d 1964, tax revenues to the federal Treasury increased\u200d by over 60 percent by the end of the decade, unemployment fell to under 5 percent and\u200b the\u200d nation enjoyed a budget surplus\u2064 by the end of the \u200b1960s.<\/p>\n<p>Of\u200c course, JFK also famously set\u2063 a goal of putting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-commander-first-u-s-mission-moon-dies-95\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">man on \u200bthe \u2063moon<\/a> by the end of the 1960s, which was achieved in July 1969.<\/p>\n<p>The NASA space center in Florida was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/kennedy\/kennedy-space-center-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">named in his honor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"firefly-embed\">\n<\/div>\n<p>A challenge for Kennedy\u2019s second\u2063 term\u2063 would have continued to be confronting the Soviet Union. He had successfully <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jfklibrary.org\/learn\/about-jfk\/jfk-in-history\/nuclear-test-ban-treaty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">concluded<\/a> a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/north-korea-takes-over-un-nuclear-disarmament-body\/\" title=\"North Korea Takes Over UN Nuclear Disarmament Body\">nuclear test ban treaty<\/a>\u200c in August 1963\u200b barring atmospheric\u2064 and underwater tests.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, some of\u2063 Kennedy\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/what-if-kennedy-had-served-a-2nd-term-60th-anniversary-of-jfks-assassination\/\" title=\"What if Kennedy Had Served a 2nd Term? 60th Anniversary of JFK's Assassination\">big-ticket\u2062 items \u2014 including civil rights legislation<\/a>, tax\u2064 reform and space exploration \u2014 did go\u2064 forward after his death.<\/p>\n<p>What the country missed was having him in\u200b the White House \u2064for potentially five more years. \u200dThere would have been new initiatives, new goals\u2062 to achieve and,\u200d of course, that Kennedy style.<\/p>\n<div class=\"firefly-embed\">\n<\/div>\n<p>Historians still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/presidentsurvey2021\/?page=overall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rank him<\/a> among the\u200d top 10 to have \u2063ever served as commander in chief though he held the office for only about \u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/about-the-white-house\/presidents\/john-f-kennedy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1,000 days<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Great presidents \u2062do not come along\u200d very often,\u2064 but\u200b Kennedy was one\u200d of them.<\/p>\n<p>The post <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/kennedy-served-2nd-term-60th-anniversary-jfks-assassination\/\">What if Kennedy Had Served a 2nd Term? 60th \u200dAnniversary of JFK&#8217;s Assassination<\/a> appeared first on <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\">The Western Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> What\u200c legislation\u200d did John F. Johnson<\/a>, escalated\u200d the U.S.\u2064 presence in Vietnam \u200dand the war continued until 1975,\u200c with \u2062devastating consequences for both the American people and \u2062the Vietnamese.<\/p>\n<p>If Kennedy had served a second term, \u200cit is plausible \u200cto imagine \u2064that he would \u2062have followed through\u200b on his plan to withdraw from Vietnam. His cautious approach to the conflict and willingness to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/marine-veteran-held-hostage-in-venezuela-faces-trial\/\" title=\"Marine Veteran Held Hostage in Venezuela Faces Trial\">explore diplomatic solutions<\/a> could have \u2062prevented \u200dthe further escalation of the war\u200c and possibly brought an end to the conflict much earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, Kennedy&#8217;s commitment to civil rights could have had a significant impact on the United States\u200d during the turbulent 1960s. His support for legislation aimed \u200bat ending racial discrimination, such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and \u200dthe Voting Rights Act of 1965, signaled a shift \u200bin national policy and marked a turning point in the fight for \u2064equality.
