It\u200c added to the \u2064spate of\u2064 negative themes and stories leading up \u2062to the race, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/lifestyle\/travel\/las-vegas-formula-1-traffic-029f310d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">months\u200c of traffic delays and hassles<\/a> for locals, to <a href=\"https:\/\/oversteer48.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Vegas-F1-ticket-prices.jpg\">ridiculously<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/oversteer48.com\/las-vegas-f1-hotel-rates-decrease\/\">expensive \u200cprices<\/a>, to <a href=\"https:\/\/oversteer48.com\/las-vegas-f1-ticket-prices-falling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">brokers dumping tickets<\/a> (which had \u200bnot sold out) due \u200bto lack of \u2062demand.<\/p>\n<p>The race itself, held late Saturday night and won by Max\u200d Verstappen, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.co.uk\/f1\/report?id=600026789\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">contained some thrilling \u200bmoments<\/a>, as Verstappen had\u200d to come from behind to\u200b gain \u200dhis\u2064 record 18th win of the season. But events earlier in the weekend could mar \u2064the Las Vegas Grand Prix for years \u2063to come.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unsafe Conditions<\/h2>\n<p>Less than 10 \u2062minutes into Thursday \u200bnight\u2019s first practice, officials had to red-flag the session, \u200chalting all \u200con-track activity. Two separate cars\u200c \u2014 the Alpine driven by\u2063 Esteban Ocon and the\u2062 Ferrari of Carlos Sainz \u200b\u2014 ran over a drain cover on \u200dLas Vegas Boulevard (aka \u2063\u201cthe Strip\u201d),\u2064 which constitutes \u2063the backstretch of the grand prix circuit.<\/p>\n<p>Sainz\u2019s crash, which\u2064 came \u200cat speeds approaching 200 mph, \u200bcaused a \u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/f1\/story\/_\/id\/38918499\/ferrari-boss-labels-carlos-sainz-las-vegas-gp-drain-cover-incident-unacceptable\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tremendous amount of damage to his car<\/a> \u2014 so much so that after the incident, the pavement was <a href=\"https:\/\/a.espncdn.com\/combiner\/i?img=\/photo\/2023\/1117\/r1254321_1296x729_16-9.jpg&#038;w=1140&#038;cquality=40&#038;format=jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">visible<\/a> from inside the car\u2019s \u2063cockpit.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-4e742e64a2c5d3a149c7bf2b5d8ff042 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-4e742e64a2c5d3a149c7bf2b5d8ff042\"><\/div>\n<p>Things only got worse from there.<\/p>\n<p>For starters, Sainz learned\u200c that because\u200d the damage forced him\u2063 to go\u200b to a backup car and power unit, he \u200cwould have to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/f1\/story\/_\/id\/38921084\/sainz-not-happy-being-handed-10-place-grid-penalty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">take\u200b a 10-place \u2063grid penalty<\/a> \u200bat the start of the race. In \u200bother\u200b words, because Formula One didn\u2019t properly inspect and secure the track before practice started Thursday night, \u2064Sainz and his team not \u2063only suffered a small \u2062fortune in \u2062damage, but\u200d they got penalized for the race itself \u200bbecause the sport\u2019s regulations don\u2019t allow for a waiver \u2063or exception for a problem not of Sainz\u2019s doing.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fans Kicked Out<\/h2>\n<p>As one would expect, the damage to Sainz\u2019s \u200ccar necessitated lengthy\u200d delays to the\u200d evening\u2019s schedule \u200cto\u200d allow Formula One to repair the track. Because Nevada law <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/f1\/story\/_\/id\/38918499\/ferrari-boss-labels-carlos-sainz-las-vegas-gp-drain-cover-incident-unacceptable\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prohibits<\/a> welding shut manhole covers, the \u200dseries had to keep them in place with quick-setting concrete.<\/p>\n<p>But examining and fixing the 20-30 spots on the\u200b track took over \u2064five hours. And because Formula \u2063One originally set\u200d practice\u200b times very late \u2014 the \u201cearly\u201d practice began at \u200d8:30 p.m. local\u200b time \u2014 \u2064so that European fans eight hours ahead could \u2064watch them, the repairs took \u2063well into the \u200cearly hours of \u200dFriday\u2064 morning Las Vegas time.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-83a1a4ea9cadb594017ed412f63ac5e9 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-83a1a4ea9cadb594017ed412f63ac5e9\"><\/div>\n<p>Excepting \u200bthe brief few minutes before \u2064the drain issues appeared, Thursday\u2019s sole \u200cpractice didn\u2019t start until 2:30 a.m. local time. And the \u206290-minute session took place without fans.\u200b Spectators were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.co.uk\/f1\/report?id=600026789\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">kicked out of the circuit<\/a> at 1:30 because \u2062security staff had to \u201cclock \u200bout\u201d due to local labor laws. <\/p>\n<p>ESPN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.co.uk\/f1\/report?id=600026789\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">accurately described<\/a> the end result: \u201cThe bizarre \u2062spectacle\u2062 of \u200b20 Formula One cars \u2064circulating an empty\u200b city in the \u200dmiddle of the \u200bnight,\u201d a \u201cfarcical\u201d outcome by any standard.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Refunds, Anyone?<\/h2>\n<p>Despite all the \u200c(negative) coverage of Thursday \u2064night\u2019s debacle, one word failed\u200b to appear: \u201crefund.\u201d It bears\u200c repeating that tickets just for Thursday\u2019s practice cost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/sports\/other\/las-vegas-grand-prix-ticket-prices-plummet-as-f1-scrambles-to-sell-out-event\/ar-AA1jZsiF?ocid=msedgntp&#038;pc=DCTS&#038;cvid=fbdc5e6bf04347c9a6028c9ac75079c3&#038;ei=8\">roughly<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/oversteer48.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Vegas-F1-ticket-prices.jpg\">$200 apiece<\/a>, not counting associated extras \u2063(fees, parking, refreshments, \u2062potential travel\u2062 costs, and more). As one <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/bobpockrass\/status\/1725688927141380280?s=20\">astute observer noted<\/a>, the money\u200c those fans spent \u200cquite \u2063literally went \u2064down the \u200ddrain.<\/p>\n<p>For their money, fans who stayed all\u2062 evening got a handful of laps\u2062 before the\u2063 Sainz\u200d incident, followed by five hours of waiting\u2064 in vain for further on-track action \u2014 in some of the \u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/sports\/other\/weather-may-play-a-huge-role-at-the-las-vegas-grand-prix\/ar-AA1jtPKA?ocid=msedgntp&#038;pc=DCTS&#038;cvid=1132c750e1ba41c7809adad73088f8ce&#038;ei=15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coldest temperatures<\/a> \u200cFormula One\u2064 has\u200c raced in \u2064\u2014 and then a \u200bprompt \u201cGo home!\u201d at 1:30 a.m.\u200d All this\u200b for\u2062 problems caused entirely\u2064 by Formula One\u2019s failure to inspect the track properly.<\/p>\n<p>Mercedes boss Toto Wolff attempted to dismiss \u2064the complaints \u200cas largely irrelevant, in a German accent\u2062 that only added to his imperious demeanor:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <span class=\"Ro09epknprqzw3JnDgYs1dCojeyAaZYzir5JKDcFdGxKOufu5GWMBINPML3hbRV7XZ8E2QEqQ6mS2TLcWy1g4ktUlHwxl6aXvjh\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Never heard Toto this rattled even over AD21 \ud83d\udc80\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/shRqDlCUnk\">pic.twitter.com\/shRqDlCUnk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tom Sp8 \u200d\u3145\u20dd\u2064 (@Tom_Speight98) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Tom_Speight98\/status\/1725417686555828327?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 17, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/span> <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Unfortunately \u200bfor Wolff, what happened in Vegas \u2014 including \u2064his arrogant attitude \u2014 likely will not stay in\u2064 Vegas. \u2064For starters, in true American fashion, trial lawyers\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/f1\/story\/_\/id\/38928002\/las-vegas-gp-hit-lawsuit-practice-delays\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">filed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/disgruntled-nra-donors-push-to-oust-lapierre\/\" title=\"Disgruntled NRA Donors Push to Oust\u00a0LaPierre\u00a0\">class-action suit<\/a><\/a> against Formula One on Saturday, even \u200bbefore the\u2062 grand prix itself\u2062 began.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Black Eye\u2062 for the Sport<\/h2>\n<p>The fact\u2063 that \u200bthe race was\u200c run at an hour when so few American viewers (including this one)\u200b could see it live \u2014 \u2063the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportweek.com\/2022\/09\/21\/las-vegas-race-set-for-latest-ever-start-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">latest ever\u200c starting time<\/a> for \u200da\u200b Formula One grand\u200c prix \u2014\u2064 means that\u200b fans\u2019\u200c impressions of the race will largely be set by news coverage. (Even the re-air of the race, which\u2064 aired live beginning\u200d at 1:00 a.m. \u200cEastern time \u200cSaturday night, didn\u2019t \u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.co.uk\/f1\/story\/_\/id\/26082657\/espn-tv-schedule-2023-f1-season\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">start until midnight Sunday<\/a>.\u2064 <em>Really???<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>And those news\u200b stories will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/sports\/other\/las-vegas-is-a-farce-f1-does-what-it-accuses-other-organisers-of-doing\/ar-AA1k9uGE?ocid=msedgdhp&#038;pc=DCTS&#038;cvid=e9f25903126b491db8894c17cb3e0614&#038;ei=11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">doubtless be framed<\/a> through the perspective \u2062of Thursday night\u2019s fiasco,\u2062 not to \u200dmention the poor mood music leading up to the grand prix. \u2063In some ways, the Las Vegas mess harks back to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2005_United_States_Grand_Prix\">2005 United States Grand Prix<\/a>,\u200d where safety concerns about tire wear prompted all but six cars to drop out. The fallout from that event, which saw\u200d virtually no on-track \u200dpassing during \u2063a \u201crace,\u201d led Formula One\u200c to pull out of the United States shortly thereafter.<\/p>\n<p>So instead of\u200d whining \u200band claiming that \u201cnobody watches\u201d practice sessions, as Wolff did,\u200c or excusing \u2062its negligence by\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/f1\/story\/_\/id\/38922582\/f1-unapologetic-las-vegas-practice-chaos-happens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">saying<\/a> \u201cstuff happens\u201d and trying \u2062to appease customers with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LukeSmithF1\/status\/1725682996848836785\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a $200 voucher<\/a> for (overpriced)\u200d merchandise, as Formula One\u200c tried, the series\u2063 should start by 1)\u200d giving\u200c an actual apology for their\u200d screw-up and 2) providing fans who\u200b attended Thursday night a full refund. Then, while they\u2019re \u200bat \u2064it, they should\u2064 include \u2064free or \u200bdiscounted tickets to a race next year as a \u201cthank\u2063 you\u201d for their commitment.<\/p>\n<p>Giving a rip\u200d about the fans \u2014 what a novel concept for a sport that has consistently proven itself <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/03\/03\/formula-ones-offseason-shows-the-sport-is-run-by-elitist-snobs\/\">run by out-of-touch elites<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-0a3a0259035e519215b7f0e8ac58ea93 fdrlst__b89e9-after-post-content\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-0a3a0259035e519215b7f0e8ac58ea93\"><\/div>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">    \t\t\t\t\t   \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p> rnrn  <\/p>\n<h2>Overtaking Lewis Hamilton on the final lap \u200bto take the win, it was overshadowed by the numerous safety concerns and organizational failures.
