That was when I participated in an online book \u2064sale promoted by a scientist and inventor who \u2063also writes science fiction, Hans G. Schantz. <\/p>\n

The \u2062idea behind this sale, \u200bwhich Schantz has\u200d named the Big Based Book Sale<\/a>,\u2063 is that\u2063 for a \u200bdesignated week, \u2063all of \u2063the participating authors lower the price of\u200b their Kindle eBooks to 99 cents\u2063 and then promote the heck out of \u200cthe event. Since the sale is \u2063advertised specifically\u2062 as a \u201cbased\u201d book event, the target audience is readers of science fiction and fantasy who\u2019ve had it up to their eyeballs with \u200dpolitical\u2062 correctness and the \u201cwoke\u201d narrative. <\/p>\n

The books offered are,\u2062 at the very\u2062 minimum, void\u200c of PC content. Some, like Schantz\u2019s own novels, actually serve up \u2063direct counter-arguments<\/a> to \u2064the \u2064shibboleths of \u200ca PC worldview.\u2063 In his\u2064 novels, \u2064these might \u200cbe \u2062reflected in the narrative arc or \u2064in the \u200ddialogue itself.\u200b (His young adult trilogy, The Hidden \u200dTruth<\/em>, \u2064for\u2063 instance,\u2064 is predicated\u200d on the reality \u2062of a globalist cabal, while his fictional high school students debate topics<\/a> such as why or why not women should have the\u2062 vote.) In the \u200cend, I imagine \u2064that all\u2062 of the authors offering their works\u200c for this event approach \u200dbeing \u201cbased\u201d differently.<\/p>\n

But the one thing they all have \u200cin common is the \u200blikelihood that they wouldn\u2019t have\u200c been published by a mainstream publishing\u2062 house, not because of a lack of\u2062 literary merit,\u200d but\u200c because their work\u200b contains\u200c heretical \u200bcontent \u2062according to \u200dthe \u2062leftist censors that some publishing \u2063houses\u2064 have \u2063actually hired to function as gatekeepers. And there\u2019s the rub: It\u2019s not so\u2063 much that the content\u2063 being produced these\u2064 days\u200c is so lame, as if\u200d writers\u2063 are typing with a\u2062 checklist of obligatory\u2062 criteria next\u2063 to their keyboard. It\u2019s the silencing from these \u2063Puritanical scolds who wield so much power over what gets published that \u200bhas introduced a \u200cnew\u200d level of Philistinism into \u2063our culture. Interesting work, full of the variety\u200c that free minds are capable of producing, might\u2063 very well languish in obscurity despite there being readers\u200c eager \u200bto engage with fresh work.<\/p>\n

event appealed\u200b to\u200d me, because\u2063 like so many Americans, I am revolted by the \u200cvalues being \u200csledgehammered into our consciousness nonstop. The repetition of the same themes, the unvarying uniformity \u200bof opinion, and\u200b the specific values themselves are both distasteful and wearily \u2062predictable. As an\u2062 author of a fantasy novella myself \u200dthat \u200bcan at least lay\u200d claim to not being\u200c \u201cwoke\u201d if not \u200dactually \u201cbased,\u201d I quite happily participated in\u2063 the event despite having low \u2062expectations \u2062regarding sales. I mean, how much interest could these \u2063notices \u2014\u200b essentially online flyers\u200b \u2014 generate, even with a couple \u2062hundred people\u2064 sending them \u2063out through their social media platforms<\/a>?<\/p>\n

Well, much to my surprise,\u2062 the\u2062 answer\u200d is quite\u200b a lot. The sale moved a \u200dconsiderable number of\u200c books overall, and it\u2064 seemed that nearly\u2062 everyone who participated sold something<\/em>. I was taken aback \u2063by what\u200b this implied about Schantz\u2019s reach \u2014 which appears to be \u200ddriven mainly \u2063by\u200b his substack, \u201cThe\u2062 Wise of Heart\u201d<\/a> \u2014\u200d as well as the \u200bgrassroots \u2063marketing effectiveness\u2064 of the \u2062authors \u2062who participated. <\/p>\n
Let\u2019s\u200d face it, it\u200b takes a lot of work \u200dto create \u200dexcitement about a book sale<\/a>. \u2063At the\u2064 same time, the success of the sale only proves there\u2019s a hunger for novels\u200b that don\u2019t fit the current \u200bunderstanding\u200c of the \u2063world \u2014 the world as a\u2064 social justice \u2062warrior imagines it. \u2062These books show that there\u2019s more than\u200c one way to understand the term \u201calternate reality, \u201dand people are \u200blapping it up. <\/p>\n
More importantly, I was impressed by Schantz\u2019s personal \u2063generosity. He \u200chas\u2062 made the effort to \u200bcreate and maintain both a forum for writers and a \u200cmeans for\u2063 them to get their books\u200c in front of\u2062 the public. Schantz creates \u200ba\u2062 \u201cflyer\u201d \u2014 essentially an annotated \u200dcatalog to advertise the titles \u2014 comprised of\u200c the books\u2019 descriptions, editorial\u2063 reviews, and links to Amazon, making browsing \u2062rather enjoyable and \u200cpurchasing hassle-free. For participating authors, he even tracks sales from the event and produces a final \u2062\u201ctally\u201d\u200c at the end\u2062 \u2014 all for what is inarguably his own competition.<\/p>\n
I was delighted \u200bwith this experience. But most\u200b of all, I was impressed by Schantz\u2019s \u200cdisinterestedness\u200c in service to a larger\u200c goal, that of promoting fiction that deals frankly with reality and ventures into intellectually taboo\u2063 areas. Those in conservative circles \u200bconstantly bemoan the near-complete takeover of\u200d culture by the \u200cleft. \u200bOne\u2064 possible answer to this assault on civilization may \u2064very \u200bwell come from grassroots movements such\u2062 as these.<\/p>\n
