With an estimated $430 billion of relief at stake for \u200dover 31\u200c million \u200bborrowers, the \u2062GAO emphasized that proactive measures should \u2062have been taken to address fraud risks through effective \u2063fraud risk management.<\/p>\n<p>In November\u200b 2022, lower court orders halted the plan&#8217;s progress, and in June, the Supreme\u2064 Court struck it\u2064 down.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, when the Department of Education was \u2063forced to halt work on \u200cthe \u200dplan, it had not evaluated the results of \u200cthe application process for the\u2063 approximately 12 million approved applicants or the several hundred\u2063 thousand applicants\u2064 who\u2064 were asked \u200cfor \u200dadditional information. The department \u200dalso lacked \u200cprocedures to assess the effectiveness of\u2063 its \u2064borrower approval approach in preventing fraud.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the department had \u200cnot verified the \u2062incomes of two \u2063million borrowers who were \u200bplanned to be automatically approved based on self-reported income. These \u2062borrowers had either\u2062 applied for \u2062financial aid or enrolled in student loan \u2062payment plans.<\/p>\n<p>In response to \u200cthe findings,\u2062 the department&#8217;s\u2062 chief operating officer, Richard Cordray, downplayed the potential fraud risks in\u200d a \u200dletter included\u200b in the full report. \u200cCordray stated that\u200c the department \u200bhad developed\u2062 a \u2062<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/berkeley-ca-will-force-kids-to-wear-kn95-masks-in-school\/\" title=\"Berkeley, CA Will Force Kids To Wear KN95 Masks In School\">risk-based approach<\/a> to ensure that the \u200cpotential rate\u200d of fraud \u2064among applicants would be\u2063 less than one\u2062 percent, even in the most unlikely \u200cworst-case scenario. He also mentioned that the department had planned fraud mitigation\u200b strategies, such \u2062as requiring borrowers to attest their eligibility and verifying the tax information of potentially ineligible borrowers.<\/p>\n<p>Cordray \u2064argued that faulting \u200bthe department&#8217;s implementation of its fraud risk management strategy as incomplete was unfair, considering the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/federal-court-orders-bidens-doj-to-stop-extracting-data-from-phones-of-project-veritas-founder-james-okeefe\/\" title=\"Federal court orders Biden\u2019s DOJ to stop extracting data from phones of Project Veritas founder James O\u2019Keefe\">federal court orders<\/a> that prevented the department from continuing to work on any aspect of the program.<\/p>\n<p>Despite \u2062the Supreme Court ruling in\u2064 June,\u2064 the Biden\u2064 administration\u2063 remains\u2063 committed to addressing student debt relief. Senate Republicans recently \u200cattempted to overturn an income-driven repayment plan announced by the White House,\u200d but their efforts were unsuccessful.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> What specific\u2064 actions did the GAO recommend the Department of\u2063 Education take to improve oversight and monitoring of loan servicers<\/h2>\n<p><span>  The\u200c report, the GAO raised concerns about the lack of oversight \u200dand monitoring of loan servicers, who are responsible for implementing the relief plan.
