Perhaps \u200bit \u2063will be a braid of some sort, perhaps it will be curled. Earrings \u200dwill be selected. A light and subtle application \u200cof age-appropriate makeup usually follows. The only constant is that she will always put on a skirt.<\/p>\n<p>It didn\u2019t used to be this way. When younger, she was quite the tomboy. There were the fights over getting her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/texas-border-city-man-gets-prison-time-for-sexually-abusing-girls-in-mexico\/\" title=\"Texas Border City Man Gets Prison Time for Sexually Abusing Girls in Mexico\">hair cut short<\/a>, fights she lost not \u2063because we\u2019re that controlling, but because short hair has to be cut more frequently\u2064 and we didn\u2019t want to\u2063 add monthly\u2064 visits to the stylist \u200cto the calendar. The uniform was shorts or pants\u2063 and a polo for school, nicer pants and tops for dressier occasions, and athletic gear for casual moments.\u2063 Jewelry was a no-go, even the pearls and things that grandmothers like to \u200bgive to be worn \u200cat church.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-2054715980\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-80626e571d98ab77e02dda90541bac36 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-80626e571d98ab77e02dda90541bac36\"><\/div>\n<p>She never suffered from dysphoria. She always knew she was a girl. It bothered her how often she was mistaken for \u200da boy, not\u2062 connecting the dots between her preferred functional form of attire and how\u2062 it was virtually indistinguishable from the clothing sported by little boys. She was horrified when a classmate exhorted her to \u201cjust get the surgery.\u201d That was \u200creading too\u2062 much into the truth, which was that she just wanted to \u200cplay, to roughhouse, and to get outside. Dresses and skirts didn\u2019t lend themselves to such things.<\/p>\n<p>Once\u2062 puberty arrived, the interests largely remained, but the \u2064video tutorials on how to do different braids and\u2064 requests for new earrings joined them. It\u2019s also when she looked at me earnestly in \u200bthe car one evening and said, \u201cI\u2019m glad you and \u200dMom aren\u2019t liberals. You would\u2019ve\u2064 tried to turn\u200c me into a\u200d boy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While there are \u2064people across the political spectrum who recognize the realities of biology, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/social-trends\/2022\/06\/28\/americans-complex-views-on-gender-identity-and-transgender-issues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statistically speaking<\/a>, she\u2062 wasn\u2019t \u2063necessarily wrong in her proclamation. If she\u2019d been \u200cborn \u2064to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parents.com\/parenting\/my-transgender-child-this-is-how-i-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this mom<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insider.com\/how-my-toddler-came-out-as-trans-to-our-family-2021-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this mom<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.todaysparent.com\/blogs\/opinion\/stop-asking-me-if-my-eight-year-old-trans-kid-is-just-going-through-a-phase\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this mom<\/a>, things could \u200bhave turned\u200d out\u200b much differently. \u2063Thankfully, she was born \u200cto us, \u200dand we don\u2019t hold retrograde opinions about the imaginary relationship\u2062 between preferred clothing, toys, activities, and sex.<\/p>\n<p>Not everyone is \u2062so \u200cenlightened,\u200c though, \u2064instead preferring to categorize children based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/in-the-war-to-destroy-society-drag-queens-are-the-shock-troops\/\" title=\"In The War To Destroy Society, Drag Queens Are The Shock Troops\">rigid stereotypes<\/a> about how \u200bsuperficial things \u2064define us \u2063as boys and girls,\u2064 men and women. Countless\u2063 stories, like those \u200clinked above, of parents realizing their daughter was \u201ctransgender,\u201d start with \u201cI\u200c knew my\u200d son [sic] was trans when\u2026\u201d and \u2064revolve around such stereotypical markers.\u2064 She didn\u2019t like the \u2064color pink (once\u2062 hated \u2064in\u200d our house, now one of \u2063her favorites), dresses, or games associated \u200bwith little girls.\u2064 Ergo, she must be \u2062a boy!<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-41ad00ca28ba7ea22430441449b73fce fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-41ad00ca28ba7ea22430441449b73fce\"><\/div>\n<p>All one has to do to make such a \u200blogical leap is ignore\u200c the fact that prepubescent kids are, by definition, not sexual creatures and, as such, not much thinking in terms of true masculinity and femininity. \u200bThey are just thinking \u2064about what interests them, not how those interests align with or diverge\u2064 from \u200btheir sex. It\u2019s misguided parents who swoop in and make those assumptions.<\/p>\n<p>This viewpoint is especially incomprehensible\u2064 when one\u2062 realizes that\u200b tomboys have long been with us. They were \u2064once staples of literature and other entertainment, from\u200c Laura Ingalls to Jo in <em>Little Women<\/em> to Pippi\u2062 Longstocking. That\u200d they \u200denjoyed clothing \u2062or activities more typical\u200c of boys \u200dwasn\u2019t reason to attempt to muck around with their biology,\u200c and it still \u200disn\u2019t reason now.<\/p>\n<p>If you have a daughter, you have a daughter.\u200b Her preferred clothing and activities do not define her, particularly when she\u2019s young. Maybe she just finds pants more comfortable or likes playing in the dirt more than playing with a Barbie. \u200cIf you let her grow up as a girl, those preferences may stick or they may, as in our case, \u200cshift in more \u200dtraditionally feminine ways. In either case, it is not our job\u2064 as parents \u2062to guide them toward self-destruction, but toward\u200c self-fulfillment \u2063and flourishing.<\/p>\n<p>Let your tomboy be\u200d a tomboy. As\u2063 a father, enjoy that\u2063 you can get out and do more rough-and-tumble things \u200cwith her. As a mother, enjoy that she isn\u2019t raiding your closet or makeup tray. To\u200d do otherwise, to make the destructive assumption that because she doesn\u2019t fit a stereotype she \u200bmust have been \u201cborn in the wrong body,\u201d is to abdicate your responsibility as a parent,\u2062 to \u2063punish her with pseudoscience, \u200band to saddle her with a lifetime of legitimate suffering, not the imaginary kind that arises from preferring blue to pink.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-f01c327d26828dd595e1bbeb93b5f9da fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-f01c327d26828dd595e1bbeb93b5f9da\"><\/div>\n<p><em>This author is a regular Federalist contributor.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a19ab3ec0c00c5d3aff1d2034fdcd2a2 fdrlst__b89e9-after-post-content\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a19ab3ec0c00c5d3aff1d2034fdcd2a2\"><\/div>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<\/div>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> What are some challenges parents may face when supporting their children&#8217;s non-traditional\u200b gender expressions or interests?<\/h2>\n<p><span>  About societal expectations or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/a-detransitioners-appeal-for-accepting-sex-roles\/\" title=\"Detransitioner's plea for embracing gender roles.\">gender\u2064 norms<\/a>. Children are\u2064 influenced by\u200b their environment, their peers, and \u2064their own personal preferences. For my daughter, her preference for tomboyish attire and activities \u2064had nothing to do with her gender identity or a desire to be a boy. It was\u200d simply a matter of comfort and personal taste.<\/p>\n<p>It is essential for parents and society as a \u2062whole to recognize that gender identity and expression are complex and diverse. Not every <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dont-trans-the-tomboys\/\" title=\"Support Tomboys\">girl enjoys wearing dresses<\/a> and playing\u200c with dolls, \u2063just as not\u200d every boy enjoys rough play and \u200csports. People should not be\u2062 confined \u200bto rigid stereotypes based on their appearance or interests. We should celebrate and support individuals in expressing themselves authentically, regardless of societal expectations.<\/p>\n<p>As parents, it is our responsibility to \u2064create\u200d a \u200bsafe and inclusive environment\u200b for \u200bour children. We should \u2063encourage\u200d them to explore their interests and pursue activities\u200d that bring\u2064 them joy, regardless of \u200dwhether they align with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/brand-name-neutering-of-mr-potato-head-proves-unpopular-with-public-poll\/\" title=\"Brand-Name Neutering Of Mr. Potato Head Proves Unpopular With Public: Poll\">traditional gender norms<\/a>. Letting our children be who they truly are is a powerful way to foster their \u200cself-esteem, confidence, and overall well-being.<\/p>\n<p>It is crucial to listen to our\u200b children and\u200b respect their agency in shaping their identity. Whether \u200dthey express themselves through tomboyish \u2062or girly attire, or if their interests align with stereotypes or \u200cdefy them, it is important \u200bto support them unconditionally. We must resist \u2062the urge to categorize and label them based on \u200bsuperficial characteristics, as this can perpetuate harmful \u2063stereotypes \u2062and limit their sense of\u200c self.<\/p>\n<p>Let us celebrate diversity and individuality in our children. Let us embrace their \u200dunique expressions and interests, allowing them \u200cthe freedom to be themselves without judgment or pressure to conform.
