You\u2019d\u2062 think \u200cyou\u2019d taken a time-warp back \u200dto the \u200dgas\u200c crisis under President Carter.<\/h2>\n<p>Well, welcome to what it\u2019s \u200blike owning an \u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/video-shows-massive-line-electric-vehicles-waiting-charge-11-pm\/\">electric vehicle<\/a>. And not somewhere in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/california-ev-driver-winds-front-page-rural-montana-newspaper-plugging-car-without-permission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">back-country Montana<\/a> \u2014 but in super-green, super-techy Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/personal-tech\/i-visited-over-120-ev-chargers-three-reasons-why-so-many-were-broken-7a5d3e45?mod=hp_lead_pos8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wall \u200cStreet Journal<\/a> article published \u2064Wednesday, a test of 30 non-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/tesla-gm-ford-hit-brakes-electric-vehicle-production-come-painful-realization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tesla<\/a> fast-charging stations in the EV capital of America \u2014 stations that had a combined total of more than 120 stalls \u2014 revealed at least\u200d 40 percent of them \u2064had some sort of issue.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>\u201cL.A. County has more public DC fast chargers than\u200b any other in\u2062 the\u2063 country, according to the Atlas Public Policy research group,\u201d \u2063wrote columnist Joanna\u200c Stern, herself the owner\u2064 of\u200c a Ford Mustang Mach-E\u200b EV.<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>\u201cFrom the beach \u2064in\u2063 Santa Monica to parking garages under Rodeo Drive, my video producer Adam Falk and I visited \u200d30 different non-Tesla DC fast-charger\u2064 stations\u2063 in a Rivian R1T pickup. I ran into \u2064problems\u200d at 13 of them\u2064 \u2014 that\u2019s over\u200b 40%. <i>Oof<\/i> is right.\u201d<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Stern said that \u201c[d]uring my testing expedition, I encountered three problem categories.\u2064 I pressed the \u200dcompanies on why \u200dthey happen, and\u2062 what can be done to fix them. And while\u200b it\u2019s good that Tesla will start\u200b accepting non-Teslas in\u200d 2024, that \u200dmight not put an end\u2063 to the issues I\u2019ve encountered.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>(For \u200bthe record, the experiment was\u200b deliberately limited to Level\u200c 3 chargers, \u2062a cut above the Level\u2062 2 chargers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/793471\/ev-charger-levels-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">that are the norm<\/a> \u2064at most public charging stations. \u201cI \u200cignored the \u200cmore common chargers known\u2064 as Level 2 because they\u2019re just too slow for quick fill-ups,\u201d\u200d Stern wrote.)<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The first problem was simple: The charging \u200dstation \u200cwas broken, \u2064with \u201ca sign, a dead screen\u200d or \u200can error reading \u2018Charger unavailable\u2019 or \u2018Out of service,&#8217;\u201d Stern \u2062wrote.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She found that fully 27 percent of the 126\u200c individual Level 3 fast chargers at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.evgo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EVgo<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electrifyamerica.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Electrify America<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.evcs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EVCS<\/a> stations surveyed weren\u2019t working for one reason or \u200canother.<\/p>\n<p>The problem in some cases \u200bcould be solved simply by a company technician turning a troublesome \u2064unit off and on again, Stern\u200b wrote,\u200d though that\u2019s\u2063 not much \u2063of a help to a motorist who \u2063needs the charge immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Electrify America\u2019s vice president\u2063 of operations, Anthony Lambkin, also said that \u200bissues with power generally could force \u200cthe\u2063 units out of \u2064service.<\/p>\n<p>But the unit could also have \u200ba \u2062broken part \u2063or defective connector, Stern wrote, which requires replacement \u200cparts.<\/p>\n<p>Stern wrote that\u2063 part of the solution is replacing gear that is\u2063 as new as five years old because EV charging tech is advancing.<\/p>\n<p>Scrapping such new equipment seems like it \u200badds\u2064 to exactly the kind of waste \u200cenvironmentalists will\u2062 tell you \u200dthey\u2019re trying to \u200bavoid \u2014 \u2064but nothing\u200d says that you <em>care<\/em> \u2062like \u200bowning an EV, no matter what\u200c the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/tesla-may-buy-mining-company-ruins-natural-environment-order-build-green-electric-cars\/\">actual impact is<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>The second issue had to do with payment \u2014 namely, it being rejected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy\u200b favorite \u2064stop? No. 18, an EVgo in\u200c Culver City,\u201d Stern wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter I repeatedly tried the\u2062 credit-card reader with several different cards, the system demanded: \u2018CASH \u2064ONLY,\u2019\u201d she wrote. \u201cAs if this was some hot-dog stand in the park \u2014\u2062 except there\u2019s no money\u2064 slot!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This affected nearly\u200c 10 percent of the stalls\u200d that were\u200c otherwise working. Both swipe read\u2064 and chip read errors were reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy do\u2062 these machines hate credit cards? Again, a few reasons. \u2063Karim\u200c Farhat, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/easy-being-green-bidens-clean-energy-fundraisers-reap-white-house-rewards\/\" title=\"Easy Being Green: Biden\u2019s Clean Energy Fundraisers Reap White House Rewards\">chief commercial officer<\/a> at EVCS, said the makers of the charging hardware\u200c and the credit-card reader \u2062machines are often \u200ddifferent,\u200b so there\u200d can be integration problems,\u201d Stern wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Sara Rafalson, a senior vice president at EVgo, told Stern the problem could \u200bbe\u200d chip readers mandated by the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe newest standards \u200brequire more dependable contactless card\u200b readers,\u201d Stern wrote.<\/p>\n<p>So,\u200c the solution?\u2063 According to Stern, motorists\u2063 should \u2064go contactless and use online \u2062payment systems like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/apple-says-popular-apps-not-design-causing-overheating-issue-iphones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apple Pay<\/a> \u200b \u2014 although it\u2019s worth \u200dnoting that \u2064certain EV models can be registered\u2063 with apps operated by EVgo and Electrify America and payment\u2062 is handled automatically as soon as\u2064 you plug\u2063 in.<\/p>\n<p>Surprise surprise, that\u2019s exactly\u2062 what the operators posited was the solution to this all.<\/p>\n<p>The third\u200d issue? Handshakes.<\/p>\n<p>No, we\u2019re not talking about a sign \u200cof friendliness exchanged between two individuals, but rather\u2064 a software error \u200bbetween <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/2021-video-shows-la-electric-vehicle-chargers-rendered-basically-useless-covered-trash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the charger<\/a> and the car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u2062charger and the car are\u200d both computers, and \u200dthey use industry standards\u200d to communicate about how much power to transfer,\u201d Stern\u2064 wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe\u200c Combined Charging System (aka CCS) \u2014 the technology integrated in most fast-charging \u2064non-Tesla \u200dEVs including the\u200b Rivian \u2014 requires a quick handshake. If there\u2019s a timeout before things align, you have to unplug and start over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stern continued: \u201cThese stations from EVgo,\u200b Electrify America and EVCS\u2064 tend to support CCS\u2063 along \u2062with the Tesla \u2063charger, \u200dknown as the North American Charging\u200d Standard (NACS), and occasional older standards \u2062as well.\u2064 Meaning,\u2062 unlike with Tesla\u2019s own stations, there could be a dizzying number of combinations of car\u2064 and \u2063charger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And, to make things worse, according to EVCS chief commercial officer Karim Farhat, a software update could\u200d be enough to throw \u200bthe handshake \u200cbalance off and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/video-shows-massive-line-electric-vehicles-waiting-charge-11-pm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">make the car unchargable<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The solution to this? Getting \u2062the \u2062industry to agree on a standard. This might be\u2063 problematic, considering \u200bthat\u200c Tesla\u2019s system seems to be viewed most positively \u200dby those who own the vehicles. At present, however,\u200b those \u2063systems only work with Teslas. When Tesla\u200c starts allowing models from Ford, GM\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ev-company-biden-admin-loves-declares-bankruptcy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">and Rivian<\/a> to start using its stations, some will be able to handle the vehicles\u2019 charging system \u2014\u200b but in\u200d other locations\u200b will require motorists to use \u200can adapter between \u2062CCS and Tesla\u2019s\u2063 North American\u2063 Charging Standard. That could \u2063cause a whole new set of headaches, \u200das well.<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles isn\u2019t the only place in California experiencing these\u200c kinds of problems with EV charging stations. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/electric-car-fail-25-charging-stations-deep-blue-region-not-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022\u2064 study<\/a> by the University of California, \u200bBerkeley found that 22.7 of plugs studied in the Bay Area weren\u2019t working properly and 4.9 percent had cords too short to reach their\u2064 vehicles. (Tesla stations weren\u2019t included here,\u200b either.)<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s bad enough elsewhere in the country that even on \u200ba tour to promote electric \u2064vehicles, the entourage of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/bidens-energy-sec-runs-ev-charger-shortage-tour-touting-green-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">couldn\u2019t find<\/a> \u2062places to\u2064 charge at\u200d times.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s little wonder, then, that while EV adoption was a hot thing for the last few years, the trend\u2062 has cooled. \u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/money\/companies\/ev-makers-turn-to-discounts-to-combat-waning-demand\/ar-AA1jwomy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The \u200cJournal<\/a> had \u2064previously reported that EV prices <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/electric-vehicle-manufacturers-forced-slash-prices-consumers-send-clear-message\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">are being slashed<\/a> as electric cars go unsold on lots they would \u200dhave flown off of just a year or two ago.<\/p>\n<p>California, meanwhile, wants\u200b to ban\u200d the sale of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/toyota-president-rains-newsoms-parade-delivers-bad-news-2035-deadline-gas-car-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">internal-combustion cars<\/a> \u200d by 2035 \u2014\u2063 and, in \u200dits biggest city, 40 percent of the\u200c chargers aren\u2019t working \u200bnow.<\/p>\n<p>I can see the new license\u2063 plate slogan now. \u201cCalifornia: Drive Like It\u2019s \u200dthe Future,\u200d Fill Up Like It\u2019s 1979.\u201d Not exactly the thing to make voters \u2014 even <em>Golden State<\/em> voters\u2064 \u2014 go wild, \u200bis it?\u200d Well, unless lawmakers in Sacramento change course in a hurry, that could be\u2063 exactly what drivers will\u200d face from San Diego\u200c to the Bay Area and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>And don\u2019t think the rest of\u200c America isn\u2019t far behind \u2014 not\u200c if\u200b the Democrats have their way,\u200b anyhow.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div class=\"author_subscription_pitch\">\n<p><em><b>A Note from\u2062 Our Deputy Managing Editor:<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What if you woke up one morning and half of\u2062 the people you count on had \u2063just vanished overnight?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That happened \u200dto \u2064me recently.
