Bill Posey (R-FL) in March. The bill, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/BILLS-118hr1337ih\/pdf\/BILLS-118hr1337ih.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">HR 1337<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, would grant AGs authority to request the Department of Homeland Security to either enforce immigration laws or authorize state officials to enforce the federal laws.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cControlling the border is the most fundamental duty of any national government. When our federal government fails to defend that border, the states must be given authority to join in the enforcement of immigration laws,\u201d Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tn.gov\/attorneygeneral\/news\/2023\/11\/14\/pr23-51.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in a statement. \u201cI\u2019m proud to co-sign this letter in support which would empower U.S. States everywhere to do the job the federal government refuses to do.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Under HR 1337, the DHS has 30 days of receiving a request from a state AG to \u201censure that [immigration] duties are adequately fulfilled by DHS officers and employees or authorize that state\u2019s officials to fulfill such duties.\u201d The bill adds that the \u201cstate attorney general may sue DHS for failure to meet this bill\u2019s requirements.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Since President Joe Biden took over in the White House, illegal immigration has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/newsroom\/stats\/southwest-land-border-encounters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spiked dramatically<\/a>, with over seven million people crossing the border illegally, according to the letter. Among the millions who have bypassed U.S. law to enter the country, 280 people on the terror watch list were apprehended attempting to enter the country since the start of Fiscal Year 2021, the letter added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd these are just the terrorists the federal government was able to capture\u2014many more enter our country undetected,\u201d the letter states. \u201cThe horrific Hamas attacks on Israeli citizens demonstrate the profound risks created by our open border.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The letter was authored by Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody, who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abc3340.com\/news\/nation-world\/26-ags-urge-congress-to-let-state-officials-enforce-federal-border-laws-urgent-crisis-mike-johnson-speaker-bill-posey-immigration-enforcement-partnership-act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> she finds it \u201csurprising to us that H.R. 1337 and other similar proposed laws have received so little attention.\u201d Republicans gained control of the U.S. House following the 2022 midterm elections, and HR 1337 was introduced a few months later, but the bill has now sat for over eight months with no action taken on it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf we take action now to give States the authority to do the job the Biden administration refuses to do, we could prevent another illegal immigration record next year, start to curb American deaths caused by Mexican and Chinese fentanyl and reduce the number of terrorists entering our country,\u201d Moody added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/black-friday-gift-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CHECK OUT THE DAILY WIRE BLACK FRIDAY SHOPPING GUIDE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Along with Skrmetti and Moody, the AGs who lined up to sign the letter addressing the ongoing border crisis are from Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
