Matt Gaetz Files\u2062 Ethics Complaint Against Former House\u2063 Speaker Kevin\u200d McCarthy<\/h2>\n<p>In \u200ba bold move, Republican Rep. \u2064Matt \u2064Gaetz of Florida has filed an\u2063 ethics \u200ccomplaint against former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. The complaint stems from an alleged\u200c incident between McCarthy \u2063and Republican Rep. Tim Burchett \u200cof Tennessee that occurred on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Described as an &#8220;assault&#8221; in a news release on Gaetz&#8217;s website,\u200c the incident has\u200c caused quite a stir. Burchett referred\u200d to it \u200cas a &#8220;sucker punch&#8221; and a &#8220;clean shot to the \u2063kidney.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gaetz&#8217;s \u2062letter, posted on his website, states,\u2064 &#8220;It has\u2063 come to my attention\u2062 that this morning, November 14, 2023, following a meeting of the House Republican Conference, Representative Kevin\u200d McCarthy \u200d(R-CA) assaulted \u200bRepresentative Tim Burchett (R-TN) in the hallways of \u200cCapitol complex. This assault was witnessed by numerous people, including Claudia Griseles of NPR, who was interviewing Rep. Burchett \u200dat the time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Calling \u2063for an immediate\u200b and swift investigation by the Ethics Committee, Gaetz emphasizes the need to address the \u200bincrease in breaches of decorum in Congress. The rot starts at the \u2064top.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gaetz asserts that\u200d the panel is obligated to investigate the incident, regardless\u2062 of whether \u2062Burchett decides to press charges against McCarthy. He\u2064 states, &#8220;While Rep. Burchett is within his\u200d rights to decline to press\u2064 charges against Rep. McCarthy, \u200byour Committee does have a duty to investigate breaches of the binding Code of Official Conduct, whose first \u200crule\u2063 is\u2064 that &#8216;A \u2062Member &#8230;\u200c shall behave at all times \u200din a manner that\u200d shall reflect creditably on\u200c the House.&#8217; There is substantial evidence that Rep.\u200d McCarthy breached \u2062this \u2063duty.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy denies elbowing \u2064Burchett,\u2062 claiming that the hallway was crowded at the \u2063time. However, National Public Radio congressional correspondent Claudia Grisales\u200b has stated that she\u2063 witnessed McCarthy jab Burchett.<\/p>\n<p>Burchett, who voted to remove \u200bMcCarthy\u200d as speaker, confronted McCarthy in the aftermath \u2063of the incident. He jokingly said, \u2062&#8221;Sorry Kevin didn&#8217;t mean to elbow,&#8221;\u2064 but then\u200b yelled,\u200c &#8220;Why&#8217;d you elbow me in the back\u200c Kevin?!
