It\u2019s \u200cprobably\u200d not \u2064\u201cslow down\u2062 a bit, will ya?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Well, we don\u2019t\u2064 have to imagine a president\u200c who would pull a \u200dmove like this \u2014 because, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/11\/14\/biden-delay-indo-pacific-trade-deal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Axios<\/a>, that\u2019s exactly what President Joe Biden\u2019s people are doing regarding \u2064the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity, a\u2062 structure\u200d for trade in Asia that is the subject of \u200cbilateral negotiations in San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p>Axios\u2062 cited \u201cthree people familiar with the issue\u201d\u200b who said Biden\u2019s \u201cWhite House\u2062 sent an urgent message last week \u200cto trade negotiators in\u2064 San Francisco who \u2064were racing to reach an agreement on part of\u200c President Biden\u2019s trade plan with \u200d13\u2064 Pacific\u2062 Rim \u200bnations: Slow \u200ddown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBiden\u200d unveiled\u200b the IPEF as a new approach to trade \u200c\u2014 not a traditional deal to lower tariffs\u200c and \u200bboost market access for\u200c all\u2062 countries, but \u2063a \u2064deal to use \u200dcommon standards on \u200beverything from clean energy to digital transactions. The goal is to counter China\u2019s influence in the region,\u201d Axios said in its \u2064Tuesday report.<\/p>\n<p>However, \u200cthe \u201ctrade\u2062 plan is getting fresh pushback from other Democrats, who see it\u200d as a potential liability in the 2024 elections,\u201d the outlet \u2063noted.<\/p>\n<p>One of these Democrats is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/senate-democrats-turn-biden-china-move-president-got-one-wrong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sen. Sherrod Brown<\/a> \u2062of Ohio, who\u200b is \u200cfacing a <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/4247899-sherrod-brown-ohio-2024-tough-reelection-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tough re-election fight<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Given that trade deals \u2014 particularly with Southeast Asia \u2014 tend to send American jobs overseas \u200dand Ohio is a manufacturing hub, having Biden out on the campaign trail touting\u2062 the IPEF \u2064while \u200cBrown is \u200ctalking about efforts to\u200b keep jobs\u2062 in his state would look a little discordant.<\/p>\n<p>The same goes for\u2063 whoever\u2063 the Democrats can \u2063find to replace retiring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-republicans-get-2024-boost-sen-joe-manchins-surprise-announcement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sen. Joe Manchin<\/a> in West Virginia, although that seat \u2014\u200d in \u2064an\u200b energy-producing state, one that \u200cgets hit particularly hard when \u201cclean energy\u201d is a key Democrat \u2062agenda item \u2014 might be \u2064a lost cause.<\/p>\n<p>To these vulnerable \u2063Democrats, the IPEF being approved in\u200b its\u200b current form \u2063after talks at \u200bthe Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in San Francisco this week could\u200c be catastrophic \u2014 for their electoral chances, anyhow. \u2063It\u2019s enough that \u200ceven Senate Majority Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/schumers-words-come-back-haunt-dozens-arrested-outside-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chuck Schumer<\/a> \u2062 reached out to the\u2064 White House to\u2063 express\u2063 his concern \u200dprivately, and Brown\u200c was willing \u2063to \u200dair his concerns publicly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve made it very clear that the trade portion of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework is unacceptable,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-sherrod-brown-defends-decision-not-to-endorse-green-new-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brown<\/a> said \u200cin a statement, according to\u200b Axios. \u201cAnd I\u2019m glad to hear\u2063 the\u200d administration has decided not to move \u200bforward\u200b on\u200b an agreement that \u2063lacks enforceable labor standards.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A trade deal without enforceable labor standards\u200b is a bad deal for Ohio\u200d workers and a\u2064 bad \u200ddeal for this country.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Sherrod Brown (@SherrodBrown) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SherrodBrown\/status\/1723821485922427156?\">November 12, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This referred to \u200da \u2063portion of the \u200cframework referred to as \u201cPillar I,\u201d the trade portion of the agreement.<\/p>\n<p>The\u200d about-face \u2064might have made sense politically, given that the Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiated under\u200d former President Barack Obama \u2014 and \u2064repealed by his successor, Donald Trump \u2014 was also unpopular in manufacturing and energy-producing states.<\/p>\n<p>However, say what you will about \u2064Obama and \u2062his deal, at least he \u2064was consistent about his priorities in that area. Biden\u2019s\u200b people sounded eager about \u2064the plan.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Trade Representative Katherine\u200b Tai told CNBC in an \u200cinterview\u200c just two\u200b weeks prior to APEC \u2062that the United \u2064States\u2064 was \u201clooking to announce \u200ba number of deliverables across the pillars\u200c of IPEF, which we\u200d will\u2064 be very excited to share with everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"firefly-embed\">\n<\/div>\n<p>Now, according to Axios, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/actors-choice-clothing-footwear-oval-office-sparks-debate-country-going\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">White House\u2019s<\/a> \u201cdirective left \u2064negotiators stunned \u2014 and \u200dconfused \u2014 over\u200d what they were\u200c supposed to\u200c do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matt \u2063Murray, the senior U.S. official for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation in the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs,\u200b sounded a\u2064 lot less confident than Kai in a conference call on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCertainly this week is a good opportunity to take advantage of counterparts from all of those \u200bAPEC and\u2063 IPEF members being in town at the same\u200c time, and being able to continue to hammer\u200b out \u200bin the negotiations some specific outcomes that they can be\u2062 announced\u200c this\u200c week,\u201d Murray said, according\u200c to a State\u2063 Department\u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/senior-official-for-apec-ambassador-matt-murray-on-the-secretarys-upcoming-travel-to-san-francisco-california-for-theasia-pacific-economic-cooperation-apec-ministerial-meeting-and-the-apec-econom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">transcript<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, he \u2062added that there would be\u200d \u201can IPEF \u200cministerial\u2062 that will be ongoing, and \u2064I think\u2063 that\u200b as \u200dwe\u2019ve seen with APEC and IPEF throughout the year,\u200d there\u2019s a lot of complementarity between the topics that are being discussed in IPEF and the pillars on \u2062trade and on supply chains and on decarbonization \u200dand on anti-corruption and tax.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Murray was\u200d asked directly about Brown\u2019s\u2064 concerns \u200dby a reporter \u2064from Politico, though,\u2064 he\u2063 was ever eager\u200d to\u200b pass the buck.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo on that I would defer \u2014 refer you to U.S. Trade\u200c Representative\u2019s \u2064Office as they\u2019re leading on that \u2064discussion,\u201d\u2064 he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think,\u200d again, \u200bthe\u200d focus of \u2063myself and our team out here this week has \u200cbeen really on the APEC meetings that\u200b are \u2014 we\u2019re \u200cgoing to be \u2062hosting\u200d this week, the ministerial and the leaders\u2019 meeting, and all of\u200d the other\u2063 things associated with that, including the CEO summit, \u200ba lot of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bill-gates-raises-1-billion-from-corporate-america-to-fight-climate-change\/\" title=\"Bill Gates Raises  Billion From Corporate America To Fight Climate Change\">private sector engagement<\/a>, the\u200b outreach to\u200d stakeholders, and all of \u200cthat,\u201d \u200bMurray said.<\/p>\n<p>As for \u201cany specifics\u2062 on where \u2064the \u200cnegotiations \u200bare on the \u2062trade pillar for IPEF, I\u2019d refer\u2064 you to\u201d the U.S. trade representative,\u2063 he said.<\/p>\n<p>Right.<\/p>\n<p>Again, the IPEF\u200c debacle \u2014 \u200cwhether you agree with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-declares-sleepy-joe-harris-rest-dems-will-lead-us-economic-sinkhole\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">supranational trade agreements<\/a> of \u200cthat sort \u2064or think they impose too great a cost on America in \u2062terms of jobs\u2063 and energy independence \u200c\u2014 is \u200cproof that the \u2064Biden agenda\u2064 is this: Go as radical as possible\u2062 until you\u200c lose \u200ccontrol of\u200d the\u2062 organs \u2063of power.<\/p>\n<p>The\u200b IPEF was, for all intents and purposes, rushing\u200b toward\u2062 completion in its original \u200dform before \u200dDemocrats looked at the Senate map for\u2062 2024 and\u2062 realized that losing <em>both<\/em> \u2062 houses of Congress\u200d would dramatically temper\u2062 any victory\u2062 at the executive level.<\/p>\n<p>So, just like that, \u200dthe president\u2019s people \u2014 because, let\u2019s face it,\u2064 Joe is likely still deciding what \u2063flavor of oatmeal to have for breakfast and it\u2019s already lunchtime, which means the IPEF isn\u2019t exactly going to get sorted by <em>him<\/em> personally \u2014 slammed on the \u2064brakes.<\/p>\n<p>Is\u2064 this the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-biden-made-mockery-veterans-day-events-catches-criticism-old-guard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kind \u2064of leadership America \u2063deserves<\/a>?
