But these\u200c discussions often \u2062miss one of \u200dthe most obvious explanations: outdated and ineffective instruction.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been\u200d repeatedly\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.educationnext.org\/what-matters-for-student-achievement\/#:~:text=Little%20attention%20was,teachers%20have%20received.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shown<\/a> that teacher quality is\u2064 the \u200bprimary\u2063 thing affecting student achievement. Shouldn\u2019t teacher \u200bquality be our primary \u200dconcern? Given how far behind \u2063we\u2019ve fallen in teacher\u2063 quality, you \u200cwould think so.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-555972413\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-720f837247d9d56b78810103b7dfa30d fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-720f837247d9d56b78810103b7dfa30d\"><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Decline of Teacher\u2064 Quality<\/h3>\n<p>If you aren\u2019t convinced that teacher quality has gone down,\u2063 I would ask you to \u201cbriefly state the result and effect of\u200d the battle\u200c of Waterloo.\u201d If you\u2019re\u2062 anything like me, you could say <em>something<\/em>,\u2064 right?\u200c It just wouldn\u2019t be amazing. What \u200dis\u200c amazing, though, is that the question\u200c above was taken from Michigan\u2019s public \u200bgrammar schoolteacher-licensing \u2062 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.schoolinfosystem.org\/pdf\/2007\/04\/askeymadlit.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">exam<\/a> in history from 1900. \u2062In other words, a competent\u200c high school graduate in 1900 was expected \u2062to know the answer and to teach the answer to \u2064eighth graders. In other words, teachers\u200d back in the day knew\u200d their stuff.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Teaching Without Studying<\/h2>\n<p>By 1997, the Department of Education was forced to admit \u200cthat a staggering 59 percent of \u200dsocial studies teachers were teaching subjects they \u2063hadn\u2019t even studied. Not surprisingly, that year 57 percent of high school seniors scored \u201cbelow basic\u201d in U.S.\u2062 history, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/files.eric.ed.gov\/fulltext\/ED399676.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Diane Ravitch\u2019s NAEP \u200creport<\/a>. It\u2019s like the blind leading\u2063 the blind.<\/p>\n<p>Fast \u2062forward to\u2062 2006: 62 percent of teachers <a href=\"https:\/\/ocpathink.org\/post\/policy-report\/forming-teachers-the-education-school-challenge#:~:text=Fully%2062%25%20of,new%20realities.%E2%80%9D%5B3%5D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">agreed<\/a> that their\u200c training didn\u2019t\u200b prepare them well\u2063 for their jobs. Teacher training programs have not only been a \u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/education\/study-billions-of-dollars-in-annual-teacher-training-is-largely-a-waste\/2015\/08\/03\/c4e1f322-39ff-11e5-9c2d-ed991d848c48_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">waste<\/a>, but they may actually \u200cmake\u2062 teachers\u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/teaching-learning\/opinion-the-academic-quality-of-teachers-a-civil-rights-issue\/2009\/06\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>less <\/em>competent<\/a> at their jobs. That\u2019s \u2064why no matter how much money you throw at them, \u2064modern teacher certification \u2062programs still\u2062 do not improve \u2063teacher quality and student achievement.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Putting Teacher Quality First<\/h3>\n<p>So if teacher \u200dquality is so\u200c important, then why isn\u2019t \u200cit at the forefront of every conversation about learning loss? Because, unlike calls\u2064 to abolish\u2062 the Department of Education, improving \u2064teacher quality \u2063is remarkably practical \u2014 but not\u200b easy.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-3c4ef66d4b8afb0bb28950b616266c61 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-3c4ef66d4b8afb0bb28950b616266c61\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Education Reform Begins \u2064with Teachers<\/h2>\n<p>No \u200dlaw,\u200c executive edict, funding package, or curriculum restriction will fix the teacher quality problem. In any case, \u2063you would still have teachers in\u2063 the \u200bclassroom who \u2064can\u2019t do what\u2063 you want them to do: competently teach \u2062their \u2062students.\u200d Telling a history teacher\u2064 educated on Howard Zinn or Paulo Freire to teach a competent class on the\u2064 U.S. Constitution\u200b from the framers\u2019 point\u2062 of view would be like telling a chef he can cook anything on the \u200cmenu but only\u200b giving him the ingredients for pasta. You\u2019ll \u2063get <em>something<\/em>,\u2063 sure. It\u2019ll probably be pasta.<\/p>\n<p>Improving \u200cteacher quality in America\u2019s schools \u200cwill take much \u200dtime \u2062and hard \u200dwork. You would have to start from the ground\u200c up, training new teachers from scratch \u2062based on \u200bpartially lost knowledge. You would have to raise college admission\u2063 standards and require four years of academic work in the teacher\u2019s core\u2063 subject. Studies\u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shankerinstitute.org\/blog\/research-and-policy-paying-teachers-advanced-degrees#:~:text=So%2C%20perhaps%2C%20simply,that%20emphasizes%20content).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">show<\/a> that \u200b<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/5-of-detroits-schools-are-rated-proficient\/\" title=\"5% of Detroit's Schools Are Rated \"Proficient\"\">subject-matter knowledge<\/a> is \u2064the \u2062best predictor of a student\u2019s achievement. Educationally high-achieving countries like Finland\u200c have \u2063already taken such steps in that direction.<\/p>\n<p>Education degrees and \u200cteacher licensing, by the way, should be\u2064 done away with. They are <a href=\"https:\/\/hechingerreport.org\/new-report-reveals-that-teacher-professional-development-is-costly-and-ineffective\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expensive and ineffective<\/a>. Undergraduate education licensing can be used to\u2064 keep some people in the profession and other people out. It may also discourage\u200b the \u2063right people from going\u2062 into teaching in the first place. In the end, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/minnesota-poised-to-ban-christians-muslims-and-jews-from-teaching-in-public-schools\/\" title=\"Minnesota Poised To Ban Christians, Muslims, And Jews From Teaching In Public Schools\">teacher certification requirements<\/a> \u200bmay \u200bultimately \u200bcontribute to intellectual mediocrity in \u2064America.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Teachers Must \u200dKeep Learning<\/h2>\n<p>In \u200bthe meantime, school\u200b administrators should focus\u2064 on \u2064providing teachers with \u2063meaningful feedback, \u2063gathered from fellow administrators, peers, and students, to help them improve professionally. Schools should encourage professional development in light of\u200c the feedback \u200dreceived\u2063 and shore \u200dup \u200bweaknesses in\u200b their\u200d teachers\u2019 knowledge.\u2063 Schools should reward exceptional teachers with mentorship roles that allow them to continue teaching. All easier said than done, of course.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-d3f9a3c03b26bccd1b54cce1c4a07c76 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-d3f9a3c03b26bccd1b54cce1c4a07c76\"><\/div>\n<p>Strengthen \u200dthe curriculum and \u200cstrengthen \u200cthe quality of the academic teaching force.\u2064 The formula is simple, but the \u200dwork\u2064 is challenging. I\u2019m proud to be the head of an <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalgrad.hillsdale.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">institution<\/a> leading the charge \u2064in \u2062that direction. We happily do \u200cour work because we know that if we fail,\u2062 America\u2019s students soon may not have any learning at all to lose.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-e17fa4ea037440660e885fe1873fc409 fdrlst__b89e9-after-post-content\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-e17fa4ea037440660e885fe1873fc409\"><\/div>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<\/div>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2>In order to improve student achievement, it is important to address the issue of teacher retention. Many highly qualified teachers leave the profession due to low salaries and lack of support. How \u200ccan \u200dthe United States implement reforms \u2062to attract and retain highly qualified teachers<\/h2>\n<p><span>  Ave already implemented these reforms and have seen success in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-politics-of-parental-revolt\/\" title=\"The Politics of Parental Revolt\">improving teacher quality<\/a> and student achievement. It&#8217;s time for the United States to follow suit.<\/p>\n<p>One of the first steps in improving teacher quality\u2063 is ensuring that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/americas-teachers-are-dumb-and-theyre-making-students-dumber\/\" title=\"Teachers in America are unintelligent, and as a result, students are becoming less intelligent.\">future teachers receive proper training<\/a> and education. Currently, many teachers are teaching subjects they \u2062haven&#8217;t even studied themselves. This \u200black of subject knowledge directly impacts their ability\u200d to \u200beffectively teach their students. It&#8217;s like the blind leading the blind.\u200d Teacher training programs have also been proven to be ineffective, with\u2064 many teachers reporting that their\u2062 training didn&#8217;t prepare them well for their jobs. These programs not only waste valuable\u200d time and resources but may actually make teachers less competent at\u200b their jobs.
