Tragically, such a lack of oversight leads to the patient experiencing complications, and her life, along with her\u2063 preborn child\u2019s, is\u200d ended. <\/p>\n

Can you really see a scenario in which a skillful lawyer stops pursuing these charges simply because California wants to claim that its laws hold \u201cmore weight\u201d than those of another state? <\/p>\n
Consider\u200c also the recent, heartbreaking case in Nevada<\/a> where CVS pharmacists accidentally gave \u200ca \u2062woman who was undergoing in\u2063 vitro fertilization (IVF) pills that caused a direct \u2062abortion, killing her twin preborn children. \u2064Timika Thomas was supposed\u200d to be \u2063picking up \u200cmedication \u200bthat would support the two lives\u200d growing inside her,\u2064 yet instead experienced \u201cextreme pain\u201d both mentally and physically after taking the wrongfully given\u200b drugs. <\/p>\n
An investigation found that a series of mistakes \u200bled to the disaster. According to a report on\u2062 the incident<\/a>, one clinical technician entered the wrong drug name into the prescription, incorrectly thinking she knew the generic \u200cname for the brand-name drug prescribed by Thomas\u2019 doctor. One pharmacist also did not catch the \u2064error, and when Thomas came to pick \u2062up her medication, another pharmacist failed to follow protocol and counsel her on the pills as it was her first \u200btime receiving the drug. <\/p>\n

For pharmacists like me, this chilling scenario raises fundamental\u2064 questions<\/a> about the\u200b responsibility that comes with our professional roles. We are bound\u200c by our ethical duty to protect life and adhere to \u200bthe laws set \u2063forth at the federal, state, and\u2064 local\u200d levels, but California\u2064 has placed pharmacists in an impossible position where\u200d no one wins. <\/p>\n
This shouldn\u2019t be a game of \u201cpharmacy\u200c roulette\u201d where one patient receives potentially life-sustaining or saving\u200d medications \u2064while the\u2063 next is given medications that will \u2062kill her preborn\u200d baby\u200d and could \u2062kill her.\u00a0Medical professionals are stewards of life and accountable for\u200c our own actions \u2014 yet Newsom\u2019s reckless extension of abortion access not \u2062only endangers preborn \u200cchildren and women but also places those in my field in a perilous legal and ethical\u200c predicament.<\/p>\n
To protect pharmacists, \u2064women, \u200dand preborn children nationwide, \u2064Students for Life of America launched a month-long \u201cHalt\u200d Pharmacy Abortions\u201d campaign<\/a> last week to encourage national chains as well as local pharmacies to stay out of \u2063the death-distributing business. <\/p>\n
