Tim Scott (R-SC) on Sunday.<\/h2>\n<p>Scott, who began his \u2063presidential campaign in May, was the strongest candidate in support of a national-level \u2062limit on abortion after 15 weeks gestation, the point at which a fetus can feel pain.\u2063 The 15-week \u200bcutoff had been identified by some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/americans-remember-the-48th-annual-march-for-life\/\" title=\"Americans remember the 48th annual March for Life\">anti-abortion activists<\/a> as a viable goal for a national standard \u2064but now has no support among the \u200dcandidates likely to be\u200d the Republican nominee.<\/p>\n<h2>REPUBLICANS \u2062NAVIGATE CULTURE WAR SETBACK ON ABORTION<\/h2>\n<p>According to the pro-abortion think tank the Guttmacher Institute, 65% of abortions occur within \u2062the first eight weeks of pregnancy. Only approximately 5% of abortions occur after 15 weeks gestation.<\/p>\n<p>Scott&#8217;s \u200cresignation comes only days after \u200dlosses for \u2063anti-abortion advocates in the state \u2063legislative races in Virginia and the passage of an expansive abortion rights amendment in \u200bOhio.<\/p>\n<p>The junior senator from South Carolina\u2064 has backed federal restrictions on abortions, \u200bincluding his co-sponsorship of a 20 weeks gestation ban in\u2063 2019, before the overturning of Roe v. Wade.<\/p>\n<p>The prominent anti-abortion group SBA Pro-Life America had previously\u2064 commended Scott\u200b for his support of\u200b the 15-week ban, saying that he \u2064&#8221;offered a\u200d clear, bold case for national protections for the unborn.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>SBA declined the Washington Examiner&#8217;s request for comment on \u200cwhat Scott&#8217;s withdrawal means for the abortion debate heading into the primary election \u2064season.<\/p>\n<p>During Wednesday night&#8217;s third Republican \u200ddebate in Miami, other candidates on the \u2064stage expressed that they agreed with Scott on promoting a &#8220;culture of life&#8221; but did not support federal legislation on abortion\u200b or said that passing such measures was not feasible.<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Ron \u200bDeSantis (R-FL) and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley both signaled that\u200c they supported national-level restrictions on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/candidates-divided-on-national-abortion-ban-at-gop-debate\/\" title=\"GOP candidates at the debate were split on the issue of a national abortion ban.\">late-term\u200c abortions<\/a>\u200b as well as expanding access to adoption services.<\/p>\n<p>Scott criticized Haley during the \u200bdebate for not supporting the 15-week ban, but the \u2063former governor defended her stance as pragmatic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I will\u200c sign anything where we can get 60 Senate votes, but don&#8217;t make the American people think \u2064that you&#8217;re going to push something on them\u2063 when we don&#8217;t even\u200d have the votes in the Senate,&#8221; said Haley. &#8220;It&#8217;s important that we&#8217;re honest about that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has also taken the states&#8217; rights approach to the issue of abortion, saying that the variability of states was the main argument against Roe prior to the Dobbs \u200bv.
