As America faces unique modern \u200dchallenges, divisions have heightened to a level not seen since the Civil War. The founders of the country and heroic figures \u2014 from Christopher Columbus to Ben \u200cFranklin, Thomas Jefferson, and even George Washington\u2063 \u2014 have come under \u2062siege and desecration over the last three-plus years, resulting in a diminution of respect for American heritage.\u2063 Our enemies certainly find solace when\u200c Americans engage in \u2062self-immolation. <\/p>\n

Thus Veterans Day, which was originally founded around the virtue of the cessation of hostilities in World War I rather than the commemoration of any individual, should be a holiday \u200dbeyond\u200b reproach. <\/p>\n

Veterans Day\u200b had its \u2062origin\u2062 in \u200c1918 at the end of World War\u2064 I, a conflict that was at that \u200btime so horrendous that it was dubbed \u201cthe Great War\u201d or \u201cthe war to end all wars,\u201d with the United States playing the decisive role in the Allied\u200c Powers\u2019 \u2063final victory. <\/p>\n

It was first known as Armistice\u2062 Day, \u200dcelebrated on Nov. 11 because that was the day agreed upon \u200bby the Allied nations\u2064 and Germany to\u2063 begin \u2062a total cessation of hostilities. It went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in \u200c1918, after some 20 million people from both sides had given their lives\u2064 in the war effort. <\/p>\n

For many years thereafter, Armistice Day was\u2064 just recognized on\u200c a state level. Twenty years later, when the winds\u200c of an even greater war were blowing\u2064 toward \u2062what would be known as World \u2062War II \u2014 with Germany having annexed Austria and \u200dmaking clear preparations to take over Czechoslovakia \u2062\u2014 the U.S. Congress passed the act \u200dto establish Armistice Day as a legal federal holiday on May 13, 1938. Ironically, it \u2064was said at that very time\u200b to be \u201ca day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace.\u201d<\/p>\n

As it painfully turned out, \u200cWorld War\u200d II was almost four times more costly for the U.S. than World War I \u2014 with 405,400 lives lost\u200d as compared to \u2062the First World War, in which 116,516 Americans died. The supposition of\u200b the 1918 Armistice was completely undone, and eventually, after World War II \u200dand the Korean War, veterans service organizations lobbied Congress to amend the 1938 act by striking out the word \u201cArmistice\u201d and replacing it\u200d with\u2062 the word \u201cVeterans.\u201d President Eisenhower was supportive\u2062 and signed off on the name change on June 1, \u200b1954, making Veterans \u200dDay a federal holiday to be\u2062 established on Nov. 11 \u201cto honor American veterans\u2063 of all wars.\u201d <\/p>\n

As the holiday evolved, Veterans Day became one of America\u2019s\u2063 most patriotic holidays, with a profuse display of the red, white, and blue and Main\u200c Street parades of veterans in towns across the country. Every American felt gratitude for veterans, for they had been willing to make the ultimate sacrifice \u2014 in\u200b the defense of freedom \u2063for the homeland and other \u2062countries. In addition, military service inculcated veterans with lasting patriotic\u2062 attitudes that prompted\u200d them to stay engaged\u2064 in political participation later in life. Not surprisingly, the number of veterans who turn out to vote has been consistently\u200d higher than non-veterans. For instance, in \u2063the 2022 elections, 62.7 percent<\/a> of veterans turned out to vote, \u200cwhile only \u200b51.3 percent of non-veterans did the same.<\/p>\n

There are several\u200b reasons why contemporary America has become so divided. In part, it is due to \u2064the cultural Marxism that has swept through\u200c our public school system<\/a>, which, by design, \u2062casts our heritage aside. It\u2019s also likely related \u200dto the decline in the number of elected members of Congress who \u2064have sacrificed and served their country in the armed forces. In 1967 and in 1975, respectively, 75\u2062 percent of House members and 81 percent of U.S. senators were veterans. Today less than 20 percent<\/a> of lawmakers in both houses have had any prior \u200cmilitary experience.<\/p>\n

Despite these developments, the political importance of veterans has made\u2064 significant advancements.\u2062 In March of \u200c1989, \u200bPresident Reagan elevated the Veterans Administration \u2063(VA) to a cabinet-level department<\/a> with the creation of the \u200csecretary of veterans affairs. <\/p>\n

President Trump did even \u2062more to help rank-and-file veterans, spending considerable time thanking and honoring veterans at public events and political \u200brallies. More importantly, he delivered on a campaign promise to implement real reforms of the VA health care system, providing \u200cnew options to ensure more timely and higher \u200dlevels of health \u2062care delivery\u2064 to veterans. The VA MISSION Act was \u2063a landmark \u200dbill that, \u200dwhen signed into\u2063 law in\u200c June of \u200c2018, \u2063expanded private health care options for veterans for the first time, providing them with prompt access to the best medical care available, whether at the\u200c VA or at\u2063 a private provider. <\/p>\n

The U.S. has always stood for freedom and against aggression \u2063and tyranny. Surely many Americans \u200dwho enlisted to serve \u2062in wartime knew neither the forsaken places they \u2064were going nor what they would encounter, but they all had a distinct conviction that they were fighting not only to set overseas captives free but to\u200c protect \u200dfreedom at home. <\/p>\n

Of all foreign wars in which Americans were engaged, World War\u2062 II is \u2064by far the largest, with more than 16 million soldiers serving or deployed overseas. Today, less than 1 percent<\/a> \u200d of those veterans remain alive as\u2063 the\u200b remnants\u2063 of the \u201cGreatest Generation.\u201d This Nov. 11, when we think about these veterans who are likely to pass away of old age over the next few years, we should remember that\u200b for America to continue its great heritage, \u2063it must inculcate \u2062in its citizens\u2062 a willingness to sacrifice and \u200dfight to\u2064 preserve \u200dliberty.\u200d Ben Franklin reminds us: \u201cThose who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve<\/a> neither liberty nor\u200c safety.\u201d<\/p>\n

Their service instills in them \u200ca sense of duty, honor, and\u2064 patriotism that often translates into continued \u2063engagement and participation in the \u200cpolitical \u200dprocess. Veterans have consistently shown higher\u2062 voter turnout rates compared<\/a> to non-veterans, \u200cdemonstrating their \u200bcommitment to making a difference in our democracy.<\/p>\n
However, it is disheartening to see the\u200c divisions within our country and the lack of respect for American heritage. The attacks on \u2062the\u200b founders\u200d and iconic figures of our\u2064 nation undermine \u200bthe values \u2063and principles that they fought \u200cto establish. It is important to \u2062remember that our\u200c history, with all \u2062its complexities and imperfections, is what has shaped our nation and allowed us to become the great country we\u200b are\u2064 today.<\/p>\n
In addition to honoring our veterans, it is essential to\u2062 address the\u2063 issues that have contributed \u200cto the divisions in our society. \u2063The \u2064cultural \u200bMarxism that has infiltrated our education system must be confronted, as it\u2064 seeks to erase our heritage and create a\u200d false narrative that undermines\u200b our values. Furthermore, \u2063increasing \u200cthe representation of\u200d veterans\u200d in Congress can help \u2063bridge the\u200b gap between the military and civilian \u200bworlds and ensure that the voices of\u2064 those who have served are\u200d heard.<\/p>\n
While progress has been made in recognizing the \u2064importance of veterans \u200bin our society, there is still work to be done.
