Louisiana is one of the few states (Arizona \u2064and Arkansas are the other two) where couples can enter a legally binding marriage that is not subject to the typical \u2063no-fault divorce laws.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>A Lifelong Commitment<\/h3>\n<p>In 2001, 15 years before\u200b Johnson was first elected to Congress, he\u2064 and Kelly happened to be one of two couples whom\u200b \u201cGood Morning\u2063 America\u201d found to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=2167877036739601\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interview<\/a> about their covenant marriages. In response to a question \u2063from host Diane Sawyer, Kelly said, \u201cFrom\u200d a\u2063 woman\u2019s perspective \u2026 \u200bI wanted to\u2062 know it was for a lifetime, and it\u2062 gives me such peace\u200c and \u2063security.\u201d \u200bShe implied,\u200d in essence, that marriage\u200d \u2014 real, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mike-johnson-is-right-no-fault-divorce-destroys-kids-sex-and-society\/\" title=\"Mike Johnson is correct: No-fault divorce harms children, relationships, and society.\">covenantal marriage \u2014 makes\u2062 sex safe<\/a>. And, of course, she\u2063 is not\u200d wrong.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Marriage, properly regarded, does make sex\u2064 safe. When\u2064 a\u2064 couple\u2062 enters the marriage covenant, they \u2064enter something that already existed, that is foundational\u200c to every society. In it, something \u2062real and powerful, sex \u2014 with its \u2064ability to wreck relationships and make unwanted babies \u2014 is acknowledged and put to good use to\u2063 form a family.<\/p>\n<p>However, by\u2062 2001, no-fault divorce \u2062was the law of \u2063the\u2063 land almost everywhere (except New York). No-fault divorce, which purported \u2062to address legitimate issues \u2063such as abuse, allows one or\u2063 both\u200b spouses to end the marriage with or without cause, simply because\u2064 they do \u200cnot\u2064 want to be married anymore. It has reduced marriage \u200din America to \u200ba\u200c piece of paper and demolished\u200b the authority and stability of the family.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>The Devastating Effects\u2063 of Divorce<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newswise.com\/articles\/no-fault-divorce-laws-may-have-improved-womens-well-being\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">main argument for<\/a> no-fault divorce is an increase \u2064in\u2063 the bargaining \u2064power of the dissatisfied party. The mere threat of divorce,\u200b we \u200dare told, can improve the behavior of the\u2063 offending spouse. The children \u200cof the marriage are \u200dnot factored into \u2064the equation, or when they are, \u200cthe adverse effects \u2063are chalked \u2064up to their experience of a\u2062 high-conflict marriage before the actual \u2063divorce.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2064true legacy of no-fault divorce is far \u200dfrom benign. By every determination of \u2062well-being, whether social, economic, emotional, or physical \u2063health, in every instance, divorce hurts kids. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/0674364082?tag=natioaffai-20&#038;camp=0&#038;creative=0&#038;linkCode=as1&#038;creativeASIN=0674364082&#038;adid=1K30R1ES2W3ZXB3X7CYZ&#038;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sociologists Sara McLanahan and \u200bGary Sandefur<\/a> have\u2064 found that \u206331 percent of kids with divorced\u200b parents dropped \u200bout of high school, compared to \u206413\u2063 percent of children from intact families; 33 percent of girls whose parents divorced became \u2063teen mothers, compared to 11 percent of girls from intact families; and 11 percent of boys who come from\u200b divorced families end up going to jail before the age of 32, compared to 5\u2063 percent \u2063of boys who\u2064 come from intact homes. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/10.1086\/423155?seq=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jonathan Gruber,\u2063 a professor\u2062 of economics at \u200dMIT<\/a>, finds kids of divorced parents are \u201cless well educated, have lower family incomes, marry \u200cearlier\u2063 but separate\u200c more often, \u2064and have higher odds of adult suicide.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Parental divorce is\u2064 considered an <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/symptoms\/24875-adverse-childhood-experiences-ace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">adverse \u200dchildhood experience<\/a> (ACE). \u200dAn ACE is usually described as a traumatic event that can \u2062have negative and lasting effects. Little wonder divorce <a href=\"https:\/\/thembeforeus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Divorce-Handout.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">doubles<\/a> kids\u2019 \u2063chances of having problems with their \u201cgut, skin, nervous system, \u200dgenitals, and urinary organs.\u201d Relationally, children\u2064 of divorce whose parents never remarried are 45 percent <a href=\"https:\/\/thembeforeus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Divorce-Handout.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more likely<\/a> \u2063 to end their own marriages but are 91 percent more \u200blikely to divorce when their divorced parents remarry another spouse.<\/p>\n<p>And for adults, divorce does not actually fix much. Generally speaking, you will not, in\u2063 fact, \u200cbe happier. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthymarriageinfo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/UnhappyMarriages.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A 2002 report from the Institute for\u200b American Values<\/a> found that two-thirds of unhappily married \u200cadults who\u2062 did not divorce reported happier marriages five \u2062years later. Meanwhile, \u2062the unhappy couples who divorced were\u200c no happier, on average, than \u2062those \u2064who stayed together. Staying married then is perhaps the wisest and best thing a couple can do not only for themselves, but certainly \u2063for their children, and \u200cthe entire society.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>The Importance\u200d of Marriage<\/h3>\n<p>Marriage is the fundamental institution \u200banchoring our \u2063identity and our society. Without it, individuals and society became \u200bunmoored. \u200dThis is not \u2062to say that everyone everywhere must be married. It is to say that a society with many strong, healthy marriages is\u200c strong\u200c and healthy enough to support everyone else regardless of \u2063life\u2063 circumstances. \u2063As Carl\u2064 Trueman\u2064 writes in\u2064 his book <em>Strange \u2062New World, \u2062 <\/em>traditionally religion, family, and nation were the three fundamental\u200b external anchors of identity. As the institutions of marriage and family\u2062 collapse, humans must search for or create their identities with\u2064 no objective way of determining what is true and real.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The \u2062sexual revolution grew\u200b from more than the seed of no-fault divorce. The advent of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/what-exactly-happens-in-chinese-concentration-camps\/\" title=\"What Exactly Happens In Chinese Concentration Camps?\">birth control pill<\/a> and the legalization of abortion\u2062 under <em>Roe<\/em> were also major fault\u200c lines. But \u2063no-fault divorce has dismantled\u2064 marriage and, in so doing, has played\u200c a critical part in the civilizational unmooring we face now.<\/p>\n<p>The law\u200c is a teacher. If laws become stumbling blocks to rearing children who are able to participate valuably in society and who are themselves capable of raising children, then the\u200c law is not \u2063functioning \u200dcorrectly, and it is\u2063 teaching the wrong things. \u2063American \u2062marriage laws are dysfunctional and a legal\u200c undermining of the family structure.<\/p>\n<p>We have cut \u2063the branch upon which we sit and eroded the stability and authority of the family. \u200bThe family\u200d is the most fundamental institution\u2064 of \u200bsociety, and\u2062 we must restore \u2064laws that teach that sex is a public act done in private.\u2064 Properly regarded marriage <em>is<\/em> a\u2063 covenant, and American law should regard it as such again by eliminating no-fault divorce.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<\/div>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2>Considering the devastating effects of divorce on both\u200b children and adults, what measures can be taken to \u2064promote\u2063 covenant marriage and discourage divorce?<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<p><span>  T decision for both individuals and society as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>Covenant marriage, as practiced by Speaker of the House Mike\u200b Johnson and his wife Kelly, is a concept that goes beyond a traditional marriage.
