The shots are for adults &#8220;18 years\u2062 of age and older who are at increased risk of \u2062exposure\u2062 to chikungunya virus,&#8221; according to an FDA news \u2063release on\u2063 its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cutting-corners-liberals-mindlessly-rejoice-as-fda-fully-approves-pfizer-vaccine-despite-poor-results-skipped-key-clinical-trials-and-advisory-committee-review\/\" title=\"Cutting Corners: Liberals Mindlessly Rejoice as FDA Fully Approves Pfizer Vaccine Despite Poor Results; Skipped Key Clinical Trials and Advisory Committee Review\">gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-approves-<\/a>first-vaccine-prevent-disease-caused-chikungunya-virus&#8221; target=&#8221;_blank&#8221; rel=&#8221;noopener&#8221;>website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The virus is spread \u2063by the bite of an infected mosquito.<\/p>\n<p>At least 5 million cases of the virus have been reported in the past 15 \u2063years, mostly in tropical and subtropical\u200d areas of Africa, Southeast Asia, and \u2063parts of the \u2064Americas, \u200bleading the FDA to classify it as &#8220;an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fda-grants-accelerated-approval-for-vaccine-against-life-threatening-mosquito-borne-virus-once-unheard-of-in-us\/\" title=\"FDA approves vaccine for rare mosquito-borne virus in US.\">emerging global health threat<\/a>.&#8221; The virus can be fatal to newborn babies.<\/p>\n<p>Through September, there were about \u200c440,000 chikungunya cases globally,\u2063 with about 350 dead from the virus, the European Center for Disease Prevention\u2062 and Control reported, according \u2062to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/roberthart\/2023\/11\/10\/first-chikungunya-vaccine-now-fda-approved---what-to-know-about-the-emerging-global-health-threat\/?sh=338f96dd5a9a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Forbes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Countries with the most\u2062 cases\u2064 were located in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/biggest-illegal-migrant-record-shattered-southern-border\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South and Central America.<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">OH THANK GOD! For some, \u200creactions to the shot lasted for 30 days.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Infection with\u2062 chikungunya virus can lead to severe disease\u2063 and prolonged\u2063 health problems, \u2063particularly \u200cfor \u2064older\u2064 adults \u200cand individuals with underlying \u2064medical conditions,&#8221;\u200b said Dr. Peter Marks, director of the\u200b FDA&#8217;s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today&#8217;s approval addresses an\u2062 unmet medical need and is an important advancement in the prevention\u200c of a potentially debilitating disease with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/socialised-medicine-life-prolonging-drug-deemed-too-expensive-for-nhs-breast-cancer-patients\/\" title=\"Socialised Medicine: Life-Prolonging Drug Deemed 'Too Expensive' for NHS Breast Cancer Patients\">limited treatment options<\/a>,&#8221; \u2063he said.<\/p>\n<p>Fever and joint pain are the most common\u200c symptoms of chikungunya.<\/p>\n<p>Chikungunya\u200c has been on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/virus-decimating-global-chicken-flocks-jumps-first-human-leaves-dead-now-someone-else-showing-symptoms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">global radar screen<\/a> since it was identified in 1952 in\u2063 Tanzania, \u2063according to Forbes. It now exists on every continent except Antarctica.<\/p>\n<p>The virus was \u200brarely noticed among U.S. travelers before\u2062 2006, according to \u2064the federal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/chikungunya\/geo\/chikungunya-in-the-us.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centers\u200b for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Between 2006 and \u20642013, only \u2064about 28\u200d cases a year were\u2062 reported in Americans who had traveled to places where the virus was prevalent.<\/p>\n<p>The virus reached the Americas in 2013, and in 2014, it began to be spread by \u200cmosquitoes in \u200bFlorida, Texas, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.<\/p>\n<p>Since\u200b 2015, the CDC said no locally acquired infections have been reported.
