We&#8217;re\u2063 living it.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, \u200bpublishing giant Hearst Magazines announced a new \u200csocial \u200cmedia policy that takes\u2062 control to a whole\u2063 new level. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/style\/media\/2023\/11\/08\/hearst-social-media-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The \u200cWashington Post<\/a>, the policy encourages staff\u2063 to snitch on their \u200bcolleagues \u2062for any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/roseanne-barr-spars-with-bill-mitchell-over-2024-republican-nomination\/\" title=\"Roseanne Barr and Bill Mitchell clash on 2024 GOP nomination.\">social media \u2063posts<\/a> that might break \u200dcorporate \u200crules, even\u2064 if it&#8217;s\u2062 on their own \u2062time.<\/p>\n<h3>A New\u200d Era of \u200cControl<\/h3>\n<p>Hearst \u200dalerted its staff of the new policy through an email,\u200c along\u200b with an\u200c internal document detailing the new rules. Instead, it\u2063 emphasizes the need to consider the impact of\u2063 controversial statements on \u2063Hearst&#8217;s reputation. Any\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/why-this-average-american-is-voting-for-donald-trump\/\" title=\"Why This Average American Is Voting for Donald Trump\">social media posts<\/a> that don&#8217;t meet Hearst&#8217;s editorial standards should not be shared, whether on \u200ba Hearst \u2063account or a personal one.<\/p>\n<p>But is censorship\u2062 necessary in\u2063 the Age of Social\u200b Media? Should \u200bemployers have the power to stifle their \u2063employees&#8217; personal political opinions?\u200b Has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/frighteningly-authoritarian-publishing-giant-encourages-staff-to-snitch-on-co-workers-social-media-posts-union-says-report\/\" title=\"'Frighteningly Authoritarian': Publishing Giant Encourages Staff to Snitch on Co-Workers' Social Media Posts, Union Says - Report\">social \u200bmedia\u2064 made totalitarianism inevitable<\/a>\u2062 and \u200drendered the\u2064 First Amendment obsolete?<\/p>\n<p>After all, shouldn&#8217;t a company\u200b be able to \u200cprotect its \u200breputation\u2063 if an employee supports\u200c terrorists and demonizes their \u200bvictims?<\/p>\n<p>However, we must be cautious. Those \u200bwho make the rules gain \u200cmore power. Power \u200dis an addictive \u200cdrug, and\u2062 vague\u200d rules\u200d provide the best\u200b high.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsmax.com\/newsfront\/hearst-social-media-censorship\/2023\/11\/09\/id\/1141654\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Newsmax<\/a>, Hearst&#8217;s social media rules apply to\u200b personal as well as \u200dprofessional accounts.\u2063 Managers have the authority to demand the \u200cdeletion of objectionable content.\u200b Even liking or reposting something can be\u200d considered \u200ba violation of the rules.<\/p>\n<p>Employees can be fired for breaking these \u2063rules, but here&#8217;s the catch: the\u200d policy doesn&#8217;t provide any examples \u200bof \u2063what would be considered a violation. It seems that\u2062 the\u2063 corporate brass gets \u2063to decide on\u2064 a case-by-case basis.<\/p>\n<p>The policy is incredibly broad. Even apolitical or\u2063 local topics can come \u2064under\u200b scrutiny. As Newsmax reports, &#8220;Many social movements are \u2064politically charged, and apolitical events and movements can quickly become \u200ccontroversial\u200c and political.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In other words, the rule makers can come after\u2063 their\u200d employees \u200dfor almost anything they\u200c post. The corporate brass, with \u200btheir supposed wisdom, \u2063can&#8217;t be bothered with details. They might just\u2064 rely on their \u2063feelings\u200d to\u200d determine who&#8217;s\u200b a good employee and who&#8217;s a bad one.<\/p>\n<p>The Writers Guild of America, East, which\u200c represents\u2064 Hearst editorial staffers, didn&#8217;t take \u2062kindly to this policy. They filed \u200dan \u200bunfair \u200blabor practice \u2064complaint with the National Labor Relations Board, accusing Hearst of declaring personal expression as company property.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s no surprise that the union advised Hearst employees to think twice before signing the \u200dpolicy consent form.<\/p>\n<p>Lizz Schumer, a senior editor at Hearst&#8217;s\u2064 Good Housekeeping magazine, \u2063expressed her concerns, stating, &#8220;It feels like a drastic overreach \u200don the part of \u2062our parent company.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But get used to it. Controlling the narrative \u200bis \u2063the expressway to totalitarian power. According to an article in The Washington \u200cPost, Hearst Magazines has implemented a new social media policy that takes control to a whole new level. The policy encourages staff members to report any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/arkansas-street-preacher-is-pulled-over-placed-under-arrest-for-anti-lgbt-sermon-he-gave-a-year-before\/\" title=\"Arkansas Street Preacher Is Pulled Over, Placed Under Arrest for Anti-LGBT 'Sermon' He Gave a Year Before\">social media posts made<\/a>\u200b by their colleagues that may violate corporate rules, even if these posts are made on their own personal\u200d time. In other words, employees are effectively being asked to act as informants, monitoring their colleagues&#8217;\u2062 online activities and reporting any\u2062 transgressions.<\/p>\n<p>This new policy was introduced following\u2062 an Instagram\u2063 post made by Samira Nasr, the editor-in-chief of Harper&#8217;s Bazaar, a publication owned by Hearst Magazines.
