But Funk told the outlet less \u2064than two weeks ago that he was specifically \u2064concerned a\u200d person such as \u2064Taylor \u2014 \u2064someone who is\u200c immune from \u200cprosecution \u200b\u2014 would hurt someone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s unbelievably frustrating\u2062 because we know there\u2019s going to be another victim in the next few weeks,\u201d Funk said of being unable to lock up people who pose a\u200c danger to society.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve days \u2063later, Ludwig was shot. Funk explained at the\u2063 time how the\u200d existing laws work.<\/p>\n<p>The \u200bsuspect and \u2063other\u200b area criminals have been\u200d essentially free to \u2062do what\u2064 they wish, thanks to\u200d laws against trying alleged \u200ccriminals who are found to\u2063 be mentally incompetent.<\/p>\n<p>Taylor was set free earlier this\u200c year after\u00a0three doctors testified he was incompetent to stand trial on a case of alleged \u200bassault with a deadly weapon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cState and Federal \u200blaw prohibit prosecution of\u200c persons \u200cfound to be incompetent, so therefore [the judge in the case] was mandated to dismiss the case,\u201d Funk told WSMV. \u201cBecause the doctors did \u200cnot find Mr. Taylor met the standards for involuntary commitment, he was released from custody on May\u200b 19, 2023.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In spite of those laws,\u2063 with the death of Ludwig, Funk is attempting to upgrade charges\u2064 against Taylor, presumably to\u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/nursing-home-horror-nurse-charged-murder-confesses-trying-kill-19-using-insulin-overdoses-prosecutors-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">murder<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Alleged <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-outraged-usps-mail-carriers-seen-enough-issue-demand-regarding-violent-crime\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">violent criminals<\/a> who\u200b are seemingly immune from prosecution apparently number in the \u201chundreds\u201d in the city, WSMV reported.<\/p>\n<p>The outlet reported Taylor has a\u200c criminal history that dates back to 2010 and \u200bincludes alleged crimes \u2064such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/video-jewelry-store-worker-pulls-gun-stops-smash-grab-robbery-progress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">robbery<\/a>, gun crimes, burglary and vehicle \u2063theft.<\/p>\n<p>Geri Wainwright,\u2064 who is the aunt of\u2064 Ludwig, demanded to know why her niece\u2019s alleged killer was\u200b walking around Nashville \u200con Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, we have to ask, why \u2062was this man free?\u201d Wainwright asked. \u201cWhat kind of world do we live in where it\u2019s not \u2062safe\u200d to take a walk near your \u2063college\u2062 dorm in broad daylight? How could someone so carelessly dim the\u200b light\u2064 of\u2063 a\u200b star destined to shine so bright?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ludwig was a business major and \u2064was said to \u2062have been a talented singer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newschannel5.com\/news\/newschannel-5-investigates\/who-is-shaquille-taylor-the-man-charged-with-shooting-a-belmont-university-student\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WTVF<\/a> reported Taylor has been diagnosed with an intellectual disability.<\/p>\n<p>As recently as 2021,\u2064 the outlet reported, he fired a \u200chandgun into a car with\u2063 two small \u2064children inside.
