When\u2063 it comes to \u200cbasic economics, they remain as illiterate as ever.<\/p>\n<p>During Wednesday&#8217;s Republican presidential debate, NBC&#8217;s Lester Holt demonstrated \u2062this\u2062 ignorance when he tried to fact-check\u200c Republican \u2064Sen. \u200bTim Scott of South\u200c Carolina on the relationship between energy production \u2062and fuel prices.<\/p>\n<p>With characteristic politeness,\u200b Scott \u200bcorrected Holt&#8217;s\u2063 correction.<\/p>\n<p>The exchange occurred after Scott \u2063discussed Americans&#8217; ability to produce surplus domestic energy for export.<\/p>\n<p>Holt\u2063 insisted that increased domestic energy \u200bproduction had no immediate effect on fuel \u200bprices.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Let me \u200djust\u2062 follow up. The idea of pumping gas \u2014 of turning on pipelines \u2014 that doesn&#8217;t \u2064make gas cheaper that day,&#8221; Holt said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m talking about \u2014 you become president \u2014 \u2062what can you do specifically\u200d to help people feel better about their situation, or \u200dbe\u2063 better with \u2063their situation?&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Scott replied that\u2062 Holt \u2064was mistaken \u200babout increased domestic \u2062energy\u200b production not \u200baffecting fuel prices right away.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Well,\u2063 actually it does,\u200c to be honest with you,&#8221;\u2063 Scott said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The\u2064 way that the economy\u200b works is it works on the ability to anticipate\u200c excess supply versus the demand. When that\u2064 happens, confidence\u200d drives our prices down, because we know there&#8217;s gonna be a greater\u2064 surplus,&#8221; the senator\u200c added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>When\u2063 we hear a sentence \u2064begin \u2064with\u2063 the\u2063 elementary-sounding\u2062 phrase, &#8220;The way that the economy works,&#8221; we know that the speaker has addressed this basic explanation either to a child or\u2064 to \u2062a liberal.<\/p>\n<p>In any event, Holt&#8217;s failed \u2062correction proved useful, for it\u200c allowed Scott to hit his stride by touting \u200cenergy independence.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As President\u2062 of\u200c the\u2064 United \u2063States, I would lead this\u2062 nation \u2062to\u200c making sure that we first use the resources in \u2064our own \u2062country\u2063 and not going outside of\u200c our country in order to achieve our \u2064objectives,&#8221; the senator said.<\/p>\n<p>That scenario, of course, sounds a good deal like \u200bwhat former President \u2064Donald Trump delivered during \u200chis successful administration.<\/p>\n<p>Scott\u200d shared a clip of the exchange late \u2062Wednesday on his YouTube \u200cchannel.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Holt&#8217;s eagerness to challenge the GOP senator does make one wonder. When exactly did debate moderators begin bandying ideas with candidates?<\/p>\n<p>I do not pretend to know the techniques of an effective moderator. But I do know what sounds off-putting and absurd. It sounds like this:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Your \u200bidea will not work, so let\u200b me ask a question that assumes the validity of \u200cmy own \u200didea.&#8221;\u200d Holt, in essence,\u2063 said precisely that.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In a larger sense, that kind of statement\u200b also reveals much about the way many modern journalists view their role. The evidence suggests\u2062 that your statement is not entirely accurate.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When a debate moderator engages \u200bin fact-checking during a live debate, it creates an imbalanced dynamic. It gives the impression that the moderator is not \u200dneutral\u200c and is actively trying to challenge and undermine one side of the debate. This is especially problematic when the moderator&#8217;s fact-checking \u200cis inaccurate or misinformed, as was the case with Holt&#8217;s correction of\u200d Scott&#8217;s statement on\u2062 energy production and fuel prices.<\/p>\n<p>Debate \u200bmoderators have a responsibility to facilitate a fair and balanced discussion. \u2063They should ask \u2064insightful questions \u2062that allow candidates to articulate their positions and challenge \u200deach other&#8217;s ideas. However, they should not use their position to interject their own biases or inaccurately fact-check the candidates.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, this is not the \u2064first time we have seen liberal debate moderators exhibit such behavior. In previous \u200ddebates, we have witnessed moderators giving preferential\u200c treatment to \u2062certain candidates, selectively \u2062asking tough questions to one side while coddling the other, and even interrupting and talking over candidates to prevent \u2064them from fully \u200bexpressing \u2062their \u2063thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>This pattern of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/watch-creepy-joe-biden-ogles-male-muscles\/\" title=\"VIDEO: Joe Biden's Disturbing Gaze at Men's Physiques\">behavior raises questions<\/a> about\u2064 the integrity and impartiality of the debate process. \u200dIt undermines the \u2063purpose of a debate, which is to provide voters with an opportunity to hear from the candidates and evaluate their ideas and policies. When moderators are more focused on pushing their own agenda or challenging the candidates, it detracts from the substance and quality of the discussion.<\/p>\n<p>It is essential that debate moderators approach their role with an unbiased mindset\u200c and focus on creating an environment that fosters meaningful\u200b and respectful debates. They should refrain from fact-checking during the debate itself and instead rely on post-debate fact-checking by journalists\u2063 and experts. This allows candidates to \u200bmake their arguments \u2062without fear of being immediately challenged and creates a\u200d more balanced \u2062and informative debate experience for viewers.<\/p>\n<p>The American \u2062public deserves fair and\u2064 impartial debate\u200b moderators who \u200dprioritize the exchange of ideas over their own personal\u200b biases.
