Shipley included the full text of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2023\/11\/08\/readers-response-hamas-cartoon\/\">editor&#8217;s note<\/a> in which he publicly expressed &#8220;regret&#8221; that he had &#8220;missed something profound, and divisive&#8221; in publishing the image.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A cartoon published by Michael Ramirez on the \u2063war in Gaza, a cartoon whose publication \u200bI\u200c approved, was\u200d seen\u2062 by many \u200creaders as racist. This was not my intent.\u2063 I saw the drawing as a \u2062caricature of a specific individual, the Hamas spokesperson, who celebrated the attacks on unarmed civilians in Israel,&#8221; Shipley wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/theprint.in\/world\/cartoons-in-crosshairs-washington-post-withdraws-hamas-human-shields-illustration-after-backlash\/1838746\/\">cartoon<\/a> depicted an individual, labeled &#8220;Hamas,&#8221;\u2064 with children, a baby, and a woman strapped to his \u2064body. &#8220;How \u2063dare Israel attack civilians&#8230;,&#8221; \u200cthe\u200b man \u200dsaid in a speech \u200cbubble.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Along with Shipley&#8217;s editor&#8217;s note, the \u200b <em>Post<\/em> published letters to the editor that variously called the cartoon &#8220;deeply malicious,&#8221; &#8220;deeply racist,&#8221; and &#8220;full of bias and \u200bprejudice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Post<\/em> also \u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/style\/media\/2023\/11\/08\/washington-post-hamas-cartoon-michael-ramirez\/\">reported<\/a> on Wednesday evening about its removal \u2062of the cartoon by \u2063Ramirez, who twice won the Pulitzer Prize at the <em>Las Vegas Review-Journal<\/em> before joining the <em>Post<\/em> \u2062in \u2064May. \u2064The report said &#8220;the drawing was criticized as \u200cracist and dehumanizing toward\u2064 Palestinians&#8221; and described the Hamas caricature as having a &#8220;large nose and\u200d snarling mouth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hamas has a history of using civilians as human shields. The Biden administration has repeatedly said Hamas \u200cis doing so in its ongoing \u200dwar with\u2064 Israel in Gaza.
