Since then, California \u2062has spent $2.5 million on vaginoplasties and\u200d hundreds of thousands of dollars \u200don other transgender procedures, such as fake breasts, laser\u2062 hair removal, and facial feminization,\u200c the Free \u2063Beacon reported.<\/p>\n<p>Four of the prisoners benefiting from the millions in taxpayer dollars\u2064 were convicted of crimes that placed them on death row. Prosecutors in the state can still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/01\/13\/1148846720\/california-says-it-will-dismantle-death-row-the-move-brings-cheers-and-anger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seek the death penalty<\/a>, but no one has been put to death in\u200d California for 17 years, and California \u200cGovernor Gavin Newsom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2019\/03\/13\/governor-gavin-newsom-orders-a-halt-to-the-death-penalty-in-california\/#:~:text=SACRAMENTO%20%E2%80%93%2D%20Governor%20Gavin%20Newsom%20signed,at%20San%20Quentin%20State%20Prison.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">placed \u200ca moratorium<\/a> on the death penalty in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople who think they\u2019re transgender have rights, and they should be\u2064 treated with dignity and respect, but it does not include taxpayer dollars being used to \u2064do surgeries that are experimental at\u2063 best and scientifically unjustified at worst,\u201d\u2062 attorney \u2064Harmeet Dhillon, who has represented California inmates, told\u200b the Free Beacon.<\/p>\n<p>According to \u2064the records reviewed by the Free Beacon, California paid for 35 male prisoners to get \u200dartificial vaginas \u200dand vulvas, which cost taxpayers $2.5 million, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/california-has-spent-over-4m-in-taxpayer-dollars-on-gender-surgeries-for-prisoners-report\/\" title=\"California spent M of taxpayer money on gender surgeries for prisoners, says report.\">11 male prisoners received breast implants<\/a> which cost more than $180,000. Meanwhile, 40 female\u2063 inmates had their breasts removed \u200dcourtesy of the state \u2063government for a total of more than\u2063 $1 million.<\/p>\n<p>The\u2064 state corrections department said it approves gender surgeries for inmates on a case-by-case basis but it does not place any limits on the type of surgery an inmate can get. As of the early summer of 2023, the department had\u2063 received over 1,000 requests for \u201cgender-affirming\u201d surgeries since 2017, according \u200bto agency records.<\/p>\n<p>The requests for gender surgery more than doubled in California prisons in 2022, and \u2063since 2017, the number \u2062of trans-identifying\u200d prisoners\u2063 increased by \u200b234%, Cal Matters <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/justice\/2023\/06\/gender-affirming-care-california-prisons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>. Earlier this year, a male triple murderer was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/transgender-triple-murderer-sent-to-womens-prison\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">transferred<\/a> \u200d to a women\u2019s prison after identifying as female.<\/p>\n<p>Men\u200c getting into women\u2019s\u2063 prisons under the guise of identifying as transgender has\u2062 caused issues for California in the past. In 2021, a women\u2019s \u200crights group filed a lawsuit in the U.S.\u200b District Court for the Eastern District of California after multiple imprisoned women\u2062 said they were sexually assaulted by male inmates who identified as \u200btransgender or \u201cnonbinary,\u201d The Sacramento Bee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/politics-government\/the-state-worker\/article256071452.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>California isn\u2019t the only state\u2062 using taxpayer dollars to pay for gender surgeries. Both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/pennsylvania-spent-over-20-million-on-transgender-medical-services-for-children-and-youth-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pennsylvania<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/boston-childrens-hospital-was-reimbursed-1-4m-in-taxpayer-dollars-for-gender-transition-services-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Massachusetts<\/a> have spent millions of dollars for the life-altering procedures on children between 2015 and the spring of this \u2063year.<\/b><\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> How have other states approached the question of funding gender surgeries for \u2063prisoners, and what factors have influenced their\u2062 decisions<\/h2>\n<p><span>  T provides gender-affirming surgeries for prisoners in order to comply with federal mandates and court orders.
