However, Youngkin&#8217;s victory revealed that this southern state was \u200cmore politically diverse than previously believed. Now, with all 140 seats in the Virginia Legislature up for grabs, both parties are pouring a massive amount of money and effort into winning as many seats as possible, particularly in the state Senate and suburban areas.<\/p>\n<p>According to College \u200dof William \u200c&#038; Mary Government\u2064 Professor John McGlennon, Virginia&#8217;s elections \u200din 2023 are &#8220;the big game in town.&#8221; Party leaders are investing heavily in these elections to test themes and techniques \u2062that will likely be used in \u2062the upcoming presidential and congressional races. Virginia has become a magnet for money and \u200da battleground for political strategies.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Virginia is really a magnet for money right now. This is why both parties have invested millions in these midterm elections, as whoever controls Virginia is more\u2062 likely to win the White House.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Youngkin has called the upcoming election one of\u2063 the most important, not just for Virginia \u2064but for the nation as \u2063a \u2062whole. (Samira Bouaou\/The Epoch Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Top Suburban\u2062 Districts<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wm.edu\/as\/government\/faculty-directory\/mcglennon_j.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">McGlennon<\/a> said suburban voters were key to Youngkin\u2019s win and is the reason why so \u2063much attention is being \u2062paid to certain suburbs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the Democrats have increasingly been reliant upon building\u200b majorities in suburbs, and if that \u2062has been blunted by Governor \u2063Youngkin\u2063 or the Republicans \u200bhere\u2064 in\u2064 Virginia, \u200cI think you\u2019ll see \u2062the Republicans looking for ways to \u2063emulate \u200dthat\u200c strategy in other suburban districts,\u201d McGlennon told the W&#038;M\u2063 News.<\/p>\n<p>Although \u200dRepublicans need\u200d to keep the majority\u200d in \u200cthe House of Delegates, the state Senate races are getting much\u2063 more\u200b attention from both sides of the aisle.<\/p>\n<p>Youngkin has been campaigning alongside various GOP candidates, including Juan Pablo Segura, who is running in one of the most competitive Senate races against opponent Ms. Russet Perry. The contest is also \u200bone of the most funded, with both raising over $2 million.<\/p>\n<p>District 31 is in Northern Virginia and includes parts of Loudoun County, which\u200b Youngkin carried by less than 1 point and \u2063Democrats won by nearly 6 points in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Perry, a former Central Intelligence Agency officer and prosecutor, has criticized Segura\u2019s support for Youngkin\u2019s \u206215-week\u200c abortion ban proposal, while \u206335-year-old entrepreneur Segura has slammed Perry \u2064for supporting groups that called to defund the police.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-figure\">\n<figure style=\"width:600px\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>  A protester carries a sign that reads\u2064 &#8220;Defund The Police&#8221; during the Black Women Matter\u200c &#8220;Say Her Name&#8221; \u200dmarch in Richmond, Va., on July 3, 2020. (Eze\u200b Amos\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Different Priorities<\/h3>\n<p>According to their election\u2062 websites, a top priority for Perry is a woman\u2019s \u2064right to abortion, while Segura lists parental rights and school safety as a top priority.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have been running ads claiming Republicans will ban all abortions if they win\u2064 the Senate and keep the House, which the \u2063GOP\u2062 responded to in an ad in which they try\u2063 to set the record straight,\u200d that there is no ban, only a limit to abortion during the first trimester.<\/p>\n<p>McGlennon\u200d said abortion is very \u200dimportant to suburban voters and the\u200d reason Youngkin ran out a counter ad to the Democrat\u2019s\u200d abortion ban claim.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCampaign \u2062ads reflect the idea \u200cthat both parties see abortion as \u2064a powerful force \u2062driving \u200dthe\u200b electorate,\u201d \u2063McGlennon told the W&#038;M News.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, Virginia Democrat Senator Mimi Locke told her followers\u200c Friday morning on \u200d\u201cX\u201d to vote because it\u2019s a \u2064matter of \u201clife and\u200b death\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>  \u201cYoungkin wants to take away reproductive freedom \u2064from women, our Virginia Senate Democrat candidates, who are teachers, parents, \u200band everyday working people, are fighting for our communities and freedoms,\u201d\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenatorLocke\/status\/1720434048957386971\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote Locke.<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"post-figure\">\n<figure style=\"width:600px\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>  An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/virginia-elections-a-critical-test-for-the-two-parties-ahead-of-2024\/\" title=\"Virginia Elections: Crucial Test for Parties Before 2024\">abortion-rights supporter waves<\/a>\u2062 a Planned Parenthood poster during a rally in Smith \u200bPark in Jackson, Miss.,\u2064 on June \u200d17, 2022. Solis)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Parental rights and school safety are also major concerns for voters in\u2062 District 31, especially after\u2063 the Loudoun County 2021 sexual assault case involving\u200c two students and recent drug overdoses in district schools.<\/p>\n<p>Segura said while Senate Republicans tried \u2064to enact legislation to prevent overdoses by stopping\u200b Fentanyl dealers, Democrats\u2063 blocked the measure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRepublicans wanted stiffer penalties for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/lindsey-graham-to-introduce-bill-allowing-use-of-military-force-against-mexican-cartels\/\" title=\"Lindsey Graham to Introduce Bill Allowing Use of Military Force Against Mexican Cartels\">fentanyl drug dealers<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/virginia-elections-a-critical-test-for-both-parties-ahead-of-2024\/\" title=\"Virginia Elections: Crucial Test for Parties before 2024.\">radical leftist-controlled state senate struck<\/a> that down again. They partnered with fentanyl drug dealers instead of families. That&#8217;s crazy,\u201d Segura told Fox News during \u2062a Nov. 2 interview.<\/p>\n<p>Loudoun County voter, Ms. \u2064Anne Miller, told The Epoch Times that one of the issues \u200dshe is most concerned about this election cycle is parental rights\u2064 and protecting students from having to share bathrooms with\u2064 the opposite sex.<\/p>\n<p>Abby Platt, another Loudoun voter, told The Epoch Times that she will be voting for Segura because he understands what matters to the local community.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>  \u200c \u201cHe will care \u2062about our kids. \u2062The other\u200c candidate talks \u200cabout abortion and big federal issues. And for me, I feel like you need to understand \u2063your local community,\u201d said Platt.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Other Suburban Districts<\/h3>\n<p>Meanwhile, in a Richmond\u2062 suburban, District 16, incumbent \u200dRepublican Sen. Siobhan Dunnavant\u200d is trying to fend off attacks about her \u2062wanting to\u2063 ban abortion by making\u200d it clear she, as an \u200bOB-GYN, does not \u2063want \u2064to make that\u2064 decision for women.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>  Dunnavant is up \u2063against Democratic Del. Schuyler VanValkenburg in a seat that redistricting shifted from 50\/50 to Democratic-leaning. A district Youngkin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vpap.org\/offices\/state-senate-16\/district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lost by 6 points<\/a>, and Democratic congressional candidates won \u2064by 10 points in \u20622022.\n<\/div>\n<p>In the 24th\u200c District\u200c in southeast Virginia, including Williamsburg and \u200dPoquoson, incumbent Democratic Sen. Monty\u200b Mason is\u200d facing off \u200dagainst Republican Danny\u2064 Diggs, a retired sheriff.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>  Youngkin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vpap.org\/offices\/state-senate-24\/district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">won the district<\/a> by 3 points, and Democrats carried \u2062it by 1\u2064 point in 2022,\u2064 so there is a strong chance that the GOP can win\u200d it\u2063 back\u200d next week.\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>  Another Senate\u2062 race being closely watched is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vpap.org\/offices\/state-senate-30\/elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate District 30<\/a>, where Republican Bill Woolf is running against Democrat Danica\u200c Roem, the first transgender and former member of the House of Delegate,\u2064 in a contentious race that\u2064 could go either way.\n<\/div>\n<p>While Democrats, \u200blike Roem, are focused on abortion rights, providing\u2064 more funding to \u200dpublic schools, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/california-governor-vetoes-bill-banning-law-enforcement-firearm-resales\/\" title=\"California Governor rejects bill banning police firearm resales.\">enacting stricter gun control<\/a>, Republicans,\u200c including Woolf, are focused on improving the economy and adding funding to law enforcement agencies to better hold criminals accountable.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>  While\u200c Republicans are hopeful, District \u206430 is \u2063less guaranteed to flip since Youngkin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vpap.org\/offices\/state-senate-30\/district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lost the \u2064district by 4 \u200cpoints<\/a> \u2063 and Trump lost\u200d it by\u200b almost 11\u2064 points.\n<\/div>\n<p>However, Woolf told The Epoch Times that in the few days heading into Nov. 7, he is focused on \u200dtalking to as many people as he can.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur strategy is to \u2064talk \u2064to as many voters across the district as we possibly can between now and \u20627:00 p.m. on the 7th, we just want to make\u2064 sure\u2064 that people are informed,\u201d said Woolf.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-figure\">\n<figure style=\"width:600px\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>  Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares holds a press \u200bconference at the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce Office to announce the 100% Business\u2064 Alliance \u2062Against \u2064Trafficking, Senate Candidate Bill Wolf (R) Vienna Virginia, on\u2063 Sept. 12, 2023. (Masooma Haq\/The Epoch Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<h3>Crossing Party Lines<\/h3>\n<p>  Woolf said voters have been telling him that public safety is a major\u2064 concern for\u200d them.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Ms. Shamim Sagar, a Manassas\u200b voter in Woolf\u2019s\u2062 district, told The Epoch Times that her main concern is the rising crime and believes Republicans can solve this problem. She will\u200b be voting Republican for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m living in a peaceful area, it\u2063 used to be \u2062very peaceful. Now we have to \u2063lock our car, lock our house other[wise] than something happened every day,\u201d said Sagar.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, another Manassas\u200d voter, Joe \u200cPara, told The Epoch\u200b Times that his main concern is the economy. He will\u200d vote\u2063 for the candidate that will\u200b help bring \u2063down inflation and taxes. However, his\u2062 friends and family vote along party \u200clines no matter the issue.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Nigel Chinemilly, a Loudoun County voter, told The Epoch Times\u2063 that he is most concerned about the economy and his children\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre we\u2063 going \u2064be like Europe, where we\u2019re paying 65%\u2062 into \u2064taxes,\u2062 not have\u2062 been \u200bable to own a house, [and] not live the American\u2064 dream like we were supposed\u2062 to live,\u201d said Chinemilly.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a Fairfax County voter, Ms. \u200bCamy Owens, told \u200dThe Epoch Times that she is voting early in the Virginia midterms to help ensure\u200c that school board members who support providing more money to public schools are elected.\u2064 She said she is a devoted Democrat who is very concerned about who will win the 2024 elections.<\/p>\n<p>However, Mr. Chinemilly had a\u2063 different view and said people should\u200c look not at the party but at the solution\u2064 the candidate is bringing forth, especially when it comes to which candidate supports parents, \u200btransparency from schools, \u2064and will keep children safe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it comes to stuff like that, I think you should just leave party lines out of it,\u201d said Chinemilly.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> How \u2063does the outcome of the\u200c Virginia gubernatorial race\u200d potentially impact future elections and the balance of power in Washington<\/h2>\n<p><span>  \u200b They lose those suburbs, it becomes difficult\u2062 for\u2063 them to win statewide,\u201d he said. \u201cThe Republicans\u2019 \u200bgreatest impact has been in the suburbs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to New York Times \u200delection data, the top\u2062 suburban districts in Virginia include \u200cLoudoun County, Prince William\u2062 County, Fairfax\u2064 County, Henrico County, and Chesterfield County. These counties have seen significant population growth in recent\u200c years, \u2063with many residents \u200dmoving \u2064from\u2063 more urban areas.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2020 presidential \u200celection, Joe Biden won all five\u2062 of these\u2062 suburban counties, but the results in \u2064the\u2062 Virginia gubernatorial race \u2063are expected to be much closer. Republicans\u2063 believe they have a real chance of\u200b flipping these suburban districts and gaining support from independent voters.<\/p>\n<p>McGlennon also pointed out\u2063 that these suburban districts are diverse and have a mix of affluent and working-class voters. Candidates from both parties have been targeting these \u2063areas, focusing on issues such \u200cas\u200d education, taxes, and public safety.<\/p>\n<h3>Key Issues<\/h3>\n<p>Education has\u200d emerged as a major issue in the Virginia gubernatorial race, with debates around critical race theory, school mask mandates, and transgender rights. Many Republicans have \u2064criticized Democratic policies \u2063on\u200c these issues, while\u2064 Democrats accuse Republicans of fearmongering and misrepresenting their positions.<\/p>\n<p>Another key issue is public safety. Republicans have focused on rising crime rates in\u2063 the state and \u200dhave criticized Democratic candidate Terry McAuliffe for his stance on law\u2064 enforcement.
