Mr. Klein was also\u200d ordered to\u200d pay $5,000 \u2062in fines and restitution,\u2062 according to \u200bthe DOJ.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Klein worked\u200c in the State Department\u2019s office of Brazilian and Southern Cone Affairs from 2017\u200c until he resigned from that position on Jan. 19, 2021, a day before President Biden\u2019s\u2064 inauguration.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors said that Mr. Klein&#8217;s participation in the riot was likely motivated\u2062 by a desire to keep his job as a presidential appointee.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As an \u200bemployee of the federal government, Klein was endowed with the trust of the American people\u200d and to uphold \u2063the law.\u200c He\u200c violated that trust on January 6 when he attacked the very country for which he was paid to work,&#8221; prosecutors said.<\/p>\n<p>Defense attorney Stanley Woodward has \u2063accused prosecutors of exaggerating Mr. Klein\u2019s role in the riot due to his political connection to \u200dthe\u200d Trump\u2062 administration.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Accordingly,\u200b Mr. Klein should be sentenced for his actual role in the events of the day, and not the more egregious conduct of others with which the government would have Mr. Klein be\u2062 found guilty by association,&#8221; Mr.\u200d Woodward\u2062 wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Mr.\u2062 Klein&#8217;s co-defendant, Steven Cappuccio, was convicted of six felonies. The 53-year-old resident of\u200c Falls Church,\u2063 Virginia, was handed\u2062 85 months in prison \u200dand 24 months of supervised release, \u2063the DOJ said.<\/p>\n<p>The duo separately attended\u2062 Mr. Trump\u2019s &#8220;Stop the Steal&#8221; rally\u2062 on Jan. \u200b6, 2021, before marching to the Capitol. Mr. Klein was in the\u2064 first wave\u2064 of \u2063rioters \u200dto \u200center the tunnel, according to prosecutors.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Cappuccio allegedly\u2064 ripped off a police officer&#8217;s gas mask during the riot, causing the officer&#8217;s head and neck to be &#8220;yanked violently in \u200bvarious directions,&#8221; the DOJ said.<\/p>\n<p>More than 1,100\u200c people have been charged in nearly all 50 states for crimes related to the\u2062 breach of the\u200c U.S. \u2064Capitol, including\u200c over 400 individuals charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement. Jacob Travis Clark was handed a 33-month prison sentence and 12 months\u200d of\u2064 supervised release.<\/div>\n<p>Separately, \u200cRichard L. \u200bHarris, a 43-year-old man from Oregon, was sentenced to 41 months in \u2064prison and 36 months of supervised release for\u2062 assaulting law enforcement and climbing on presidential statues. The judge also\u2064 noted that the fact that Mr. Klein had held a position of trust in the \u200dState Department made his actions even more concerning.<\/p>\n<p>The January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol was a dark day in\u200b American history. Thousands \u200cof supporters\u2062 of\u2064 former President Trump forcibly entered the Capitol building, leading to widespread violence \u2064and a temporary halt to the certification of the electoral vote.
