However, Youngkin&#8217;s victory revealed that this southern\u2064 state was more politically diverse than previously believed. Now, with all 140 seats in the Virginia Legislature \u2064up for grabs, both parties are pouring in a massive amount of money\u200b and effort to secure as many seats as possible,\u2064 especially in the state\u2063 Senate and suburban areas.<\/p>\n<p>According to College of William &#038; Mary Government Professor John McGlennon, Virginia&#8217;s elections in 2023 are &#8220;the big game in town.&#8221; The parties see this as an opportunity to test themes and techniques before the\u2063 even more \u200bcrucial presidential and congressional\u2064 races next year. The stakes are high, and the parties are investing heavily to determine what strategies are most effective.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Virginia is really a magnet for money right now. This is why both parties have invested millions in these midterm elections, as whoever controls Virginia is more likely to win the White House.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Youngkin has described the upcoming election as one of the\u2063 most important, not just for Virginia but for the entire nation. He hopes that Republicans can secure the\u2063 state Senate majority,\u2062 building on their recent victories in the House. (Samira Bouaou\/The Epoch Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<h3>Top Suburban Districts<\/h3>\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wm.edu\/as\/government\/faculty-directory\/mcglennon_j.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">McGlennon<\/a> said suburban voters were key \u200bto Youngkin\u2019s win and is \u2062the reason why so much attention is being paid to certain suburbs.\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI \u2064think the Democrats have increasingly been reliant upon building\u2062 majorities in suburbs, and\u2063 if that has\u2062 been blunted by\u2062 Governor Youngkin or the Republicans here in Virginia, I think you\u2019ll see the Republicans looking for ways\u2063 to emulate that strategy in other suburban districts,\u201d McGlennon \u200dtold the\u200d W&#038;M News.<\/p>\n<p>Although Republicans need\u200c to keep the majority in the\u2063 House of\u2063 Delegates, the state Senate\u200b races are getting much more attention from both sides of the\u2064 aisle.<\/p>\n<p>Youngkin has been campaigning alongside various GOP candidates, including Juan Pablo Segura, who is running in one\u200b of the most competitive Senate races\u2063 against opponent Ms. Russet Perry. The contest is also one of\u2064 the most funded, with both raising over\u200d $2 million.<\/p>\n<p>District 31 is in Northern Virginia and includes parts of Loudoun County, which\u2064 Youngkin carried by less than 1 point and Democrats won\u2063 by nearly 6 points\u200d in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Perry, a former Central Intelligence Agency \u2064officer and prosecutor, has \u200bcriticized Segura\u2019s support for Youngkin\u2019s 15-week abortion ban proposal, while \u206435-year-old entrepreneur Segura has slammed Perry for supporting groups that\u200b called to defund the police.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-figure\">\n<figure style=\"width:600px\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>  A protester carries a \u2064sign that reads &#8220;Defund The Police&#8221; during the Black Women Matter &#8220;Say Her Name&#8221; march in Richmond, Va., on July 3, \u20622020. (Eze Amos\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<h3>Different Priorities<\/h3>\n<p>According \u2063to their election\u2064 websites, a top \u200dpriority for Perry is a woman\u2019s right to abortion, while Segura lists parental rights and \u200dschool safety as a top priority.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Democrats\u2064 have \u200dbeen running ads claiming \u200dRepublicans will ban all abortions if they win the Senate and keep the House, which the GOP responded\u2062 to in an\u2062 ad in which they try to set the record straight, that there is no ban, only a \u2063limit \u200bto abortion \u200cduring the first trimester.<\/p>\n<p>McGlennon said abortion is very important to suburban\u2063 voters and the reason Youngkin ran\u200c out a counter ad to \u2062the Democrat\u2019s abortion ban claim.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCampaign \u200cads reflect the idea that both parties see abortion as a powerful force driving the electorate,\u201d McGlennon told the W&#038;M \u2063News.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, Virginia \u2062Democrat Senator Mimi Locke told her followers\u200b Friday morning on \u201cX\u201d to\u2063 vote because\u200b it\u2019s a matter of \u201clife and death\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>    \u200b \u201cYoungkin wants to take away reproductive freedom from women, our Virginia Senate Democrat candidates, who are \u200bteachers, parents, and everyday working people, are fighting for our communities and freedoms,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenatorLocke\/status\/1720434048957386971\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote \u200bLocke.<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"post-figure\">\n<figure style=\"width:600px\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>  An abortion-rights supporter waves a Planned\u200d Parenthood poster\u2063 during a rally \u200cin \u200cSmith Park in Jackson, Miss., on June 17, 2022. Solis)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Parental rights and school safety are also major concerns for \u200cvoters in District 31, especially after the Loudoun County 2021 sexual assault case involving two students\u2064 and recent drug overdoses in district schools.<\/p>\n<p>Segura said Senate Republicans tried \u2062to enact legislation to prevent overdoses by stopping Fentanyl dealers, \u200cbut Democrats blocked the measure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRepublicans wanted stiffer penalties for fentanyl \u200ddrug dealers. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/virginia-elections-a-critical-test-for-the-two-parties-ahead-of-2024\/\" title=\"Virginia Elections: Crucial Test for Parties Before 2024\">radical \u2063leftist-controlled\u200b state senate struck<\/a> that down\u200c again. They \u200bpartnered with fentanyl drug dealers instead of \u2063families. That&#8217;s crazy,\u201d Segura told Fox News during a Nov. 2 interview.<\/p>\n<p>Loudoun County voter Ms. Anne Miller told The Epoch Times that one of her main concerns \u200bthis election cycle is parental rights and protecting \u2063students from having to share bathrooms with\u200d the opposite sex.<\/p>\n<p>Abby Platt, another Loudoun voter, said she will be voting for Segura because he understands the local community&#8217;s needs.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>    \u200d    \u201cHe will care about our kids. The other candidate talks about abortion and big federal \u200dissues. And for me, I feel like\u2064 you need to understand your local community,\u201d said Platt.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Suburban Districts<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p>Meanwhile, in Richmond suburban District 16, incumbent Republican Sen. Siobhan Dunnavant is \u200baddressing attacks about \u200dher\u200b alleged\u2062 desire to\u200b ban \u2063abortion by clarifying that, as an OB-GYN, she does not want\u200c to make that decision for women.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>    \u2063Dunnavant is\u200c up against Democratic Del. Schuyler VanValkenburg in a\u2063 seat that redistricting shifted from 50\/50 to Democratic-leaning. Youngkin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vpap.org\/offices\/state-senate-16\/district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lost \u2063by 6 points<\/a> in\u200c this \u200cdistrict, and Democratic congressional candidates won by 10 points \u2064in 2022.\n<\/div>\n<p>In the 24th District \u2063in southeast\u200c Virginia, including Williamsburg and Poquoson, incumbent Democratic Sen. Monty Mason is facing off against Republican Danny Diggs, a retired sheriff.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>    Youngkin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vpap.org\/offices\/state-senate-24\/district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">won the district<\/a> by\u200c 3 points, and Democrats carried\u2063 it by 1 point\u200b in 2022, so there is\u2062 a strong chance that the GOP can win it back next week.\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>    Another \u200bclosely watched Senate race is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vpap.org\/offices\/state-senate-30\/elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate District 30<\/a>, where Republican Bill Woolf is running against Democrat Danica Roem, the first transgender and \u200dformer member\u200b of the House of Delegates, in a contentious race that could go either \u200dway.\n<\/div>\n<p>While Democrats, like Roem, are focused on abortion rights, providing more funding to public\u200b schools, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/california-governor-vetoes-bill-banning-law-enforcement-firearm-resales\/\" title=\"California Governor rejects bill banning police firearm resales.\">enacting stricter gun control<\/a>, Republicans, including Woolf, are focused on improving the economy and adding funding to law enforcement agencies to better\u200d hold\u2064 criminals accountable.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>    While Republicans are hopeful, District\u2062 30 \u200bis less guaranteed to flip since Youngkin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vpap.org\/offices\/state-senate-30\/district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lost \u200bthe district by 4 points<\/a> and Trump lost it by\u2064 almost 11 points.\n<\/div>\n<p>However,\u2064 Woolf told The Epoch Times \u200cthat in the few days leading up to Nov. 7, he is focused on talking to \u2063as many people as possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur strategy is to talk to as many voters across the district as we possibly can between now and 7:00 p.m. on the 7th,\u200b we just want to make sure that people are informed,\u201d said Woolf.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-figure\">\n<figure style=\"width:600px\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>  Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares holds \u200ba press conference at the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce Office to\u2062 announce the 100%\u200b Business Alliance Against Trafficking,\u2063 Senate Candidate \u2063Bill Wolf (R) Vienna Virginia, on Sept. 12, 2023. (Masooma Haq\/The Epoch Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<h3>Crossing Party Lines<\/h3>\n<p>Woolf said voters have been telling him that public safety is a major concern for them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Ms.\u200c Shamim Sagar, a Manassas voter in Woolf\u2019s district, said her main concern is the rising\u200c crime and believes Republicans can solve this \u2063problem. Therefore, she will be voting Republican for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m living in a peaceful area, it used to be\u200c very peaceful. Now we have to lock our \u200bcar, lock our house other[wise] than something happened \u200devery day,\u201d said Sagar.<\/p>\n<p>Another Manassas voter, \u200dJoe Para, \u200csaid \u2062his main concern \u2062is\u200d the economy, so he will vote for the\u2064 candidate\u2062 who will help bring down inflation and taxes. However, he noted \u200cthat his friends and family\u2062 vote along party lines regardless of the issue.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Nigel Chinemilly, a Loudoun County voter, said\u2063 he is most concerned about the economy and his children\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre we going to be like Europe, where we\u2019re paying 65%\u2064 in\u2063 taxes,\u200c not being able to own a house, and not living the American dream \u2062like we were supposed to\u2062 live?\u201d said Chinemilly.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Fairfax\u2063 County voter Ms. Camy Owens \u200bsaid \u200bshe is voting early in the Virginia midterms \u2062to help ensure that school board members who \u2062support providing more money to public schools are elected. She is a devoted Democrat who is very concerned about the outcome of the 2024 elections.<\/p>\n<p>However, Mr. Chinemilly had a different view and said people should look not at the party but at the solutions \u200bthe candidates are bringing forth, especially when it comes to supporting parents, transparency from schools, and ensuring children&#8217;s safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it comes to stuff like\u2063 that, I think you should just leave party lines out of it,\u201d said Chinemilly.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> What are some vulnerable suburban districts in Virginia that both parties are focusing on?<\/h2>\n<p><span>  Dentified that \u2062there are some vulnerabilities in suburban district\u2062s \u2064and those are\u2063 the \u2062places where they need to win back support,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd \u200dso, you see a \u2063disproportionate\u2062 amount of spending in those kinds of\u2063 districts, particularly in\u200c Northern Virginia and \u200bin \u2062Hampton \u200dRoads.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some of\u200b the\u200c top suburban districts that are receiving significant attention and funding \u2063from both parties include\u2060:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Virginia\u2019s 7th District: This district, which includes parts of Richmond and\u2063 its suburbs, has been a traditionally Republican stronghold. However, \u2063it has become more competitive in recent years, and Democrats are \u200dhoping to flip it during this election.<\/li>\n<li>Virginia\u2019s\u2062 10th District: Located in Northern Virginia, this district has been a battleground between Republicans \u2064and Democrats for several election cycles. It is currently represented by Republican Congresswoman\u2063 Jennifer Wexton, but Republicans are \u2064targeting this district in hopes of reclaiming it.<\/li>\n<li>Virginia\u2019s 11th District:\u2063 Also located in Northern Virginia, this district has traditionally been a \u200bDemocratic\u2062 stronghold. However, Republicans are hoping to make inroads in this\u200b district \u2062and possibly flip\u200d it in their favor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Overall, the outcome of the Virginia elections will have significant implications for the 2022 midterm elections and potentially the 2024\u2064 presidential election.
