These harmless flies are the \u2064next step in the battle against the Mediterranean (Medfly) fruit flies, according to the California Department of Food\u200b and Agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>By releasing these sterile flies, the wild ones will struggle to \u200dreproduce \u200dand eventually die out. This method has been used for\u2062 the past 30 years \u200cto prevent infestations, but when new flies are \u200cdiscovered, like the recent case in Los Angeles, the releases become more intense. This\u2064 area is\u200d bordered by Melrose\u2062 Avenue, West \u2063Century Boulevard, \u200dInterstate 405, and Nevin \u2063Avenue.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the Mediterranean fruit flies, \u2063parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties\u200b have also been quarantined due\u200c to the presence \u2064of Queensland fruit flies, which are native to Australia. High-risk fruits\u200b include grapes, strawberries, figs, citrus varieties, avocados, apricots, peaches, cherries, nectarines, plums, pears, and apples. These treatments \u200dinclude manual inspections, removal of infested fruits and\u200b vegetables, and the use of natural, \u2062organic materials to reduce the population of live adult fruit flies.<\/p>\n<p>Traps will also be set up to attract and eliminate the adult male fruit flies.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2>What is the disease from fruit flies?<\/h2>\n<p><span>Research shows that fruit flies\u2062 can transfer germs from \u2062a dirty \u2062surface onto a clean one. Some of the bacteria they may carry include salmonella, E.\u2062 coli, and \u2063listeria. These three germs each cause\u200b food poisoning. Is considered a major \u2062pest of fruits and vegetables, as they lay\u200c their eggs inside the fruit, which \u200bthen hatch into larvae that feed \u200con the\u200c fruit and cause \u200bdamage. The quarantine measures and sterile fly releases are crucial in preventing\u200b the further spread of these harmful\u200b pests.<\/p>\n<p>The California Department of \u200bFood and Agriculture is working tirelessly to \u2064educate and \u2062inform residents\u2063 within the quarantine area about the importance of following \u200dthese guidelines.
