It\u2019s \u201can evening to\u2064 honor the history and legacy of the Marine Corps and the accomplishments of the\u200b Marines,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/pendleton.usmc-mccs.org\/news\/usmc-birthday-ball-etiquette-101\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Corps\u2019\u200c website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who has served or has relatives who\u2019ve served, or is currently serving, \u200ccan attest to this soft spot that virtually every Marine appears to have.<\/p>\n<p>Second, \u200band perhaps \u200dfar more disconcertingly, U.S. Central Command, headquartered in \u200dTampa, Florida, is a\u2062 unified combatant command\u200b that specifically oversees central Asia \u2014 and \u2062the Middle\u200c East.<\/p>\n<p>And as long as you\u200b haven\u2019t been\u200b living under a rock in the \u2064last month or so, you\u200b are\u200b also\u2063 painfully aware that things are not well in the Middle East. Israel is at war with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-hamas-leader-vows-sacrifice-martyrs-another-oct-7-style-attack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hamas terrorists<\/a> following their bloody\u200b and \u200dbarbaric invasion of the Jewish state on \u2062Oct. 7.<\/p>\n<p>Given that logical extension, many prognosticators took \u2063this birthday \u2063ball cancellation \u200das a sign that something big \u2064and something bad was imminent.<\/p>\n<p>Not helping \u2064matters, Maj. Gen. Chris McPhillips seemingly confirmed that <em>something <\/em>was\u2062 going on, \u200beven\u200b if he wouldn\u2019t offer \u200bany more specifics when he announced this\u2064 decision on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegretfully \u200dand with a strong sense of duty, I write to\u2064 inform you of\u2062 a\u2063 decision that I had to\u2064 make regarding the Marine Corps 248th Ball, scheduled for 16 November 2023,\u201d\u200c McPhillips\u2064 announced Wednesday, \u2063per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2023\/11\/01\/marine-corps-command-charge-of-middle-east-cancels-annual-ball-due-unforeseen-operational.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Military.com<\/a>, in a since-scrubbed message on the X <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-new-acting-attorney-general-jeff-rosen-recently-wrote-an-essay-on-foreign-influence-in-us-elections-this-tells-us-a-little-about-his-knowledge-of-whats-going-on-today\/\" title=\"The New Acting Attorney General Jeff Rosen Recently Wrote an Essay on Foreign Influence in US Elections \u2013 This Tells Us A Little About His Knowledge of What\u2019s Going On Today\">social media platform<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDue to unforeseen operation commitments\u200b and the nature of our current mission, it is with great regret that we must cancel this year\u2019s event,\u201d the general \u200bsaid.<\/p>\n<p>In \u200can email to the Times on Wednesday, Marine Corps spokesman Capt. \u200bJoe Wright said, \u201cBecause of the uncertain situation, the MARCENT [Marine Corps Forces Central Command] Commander wants to \u200davoid a last-minute cancellation that would\u2063 burden Marines, families, veterans,\u200c and members of the community with trying to recoup money from ticket sales, reservations, etc.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wright said the message was removed from X and posted to Facebook \u201cbecause the audience it\u2019s trying to reach \u2014 of current and former\u2062 members of\u200c the unit, family members and the\u200b larger\u200c Tampa community \u2014 is located on\u200d Facebook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u200d post on the MARCENT page on Facebook had different wording\u2062 but \u200dthe same message:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>A \u2064cursory X search of \u201cCENTCOM Ball\u201d yielded a number of very concerned responses to the news:<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>As \u200cto \u2062what this could portend, this\u2063 writer dares not\u200b speculate given the gravity of the situation. But it\u2019s safe to say it could be bloody, it won\u2019t be good,\u200c it\u2019ll likely\u2063 be very costly and it\u2019ll probably\u2064 be\u2064 taking place in the Middle \u200dEast \u2014 directly.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>As one final reiteration to drive \u2063this \u2062home: Marines love \u200ctheir\u200c celebratory balls.
