Here\u2019s a \u201cwho\u2019s who\u201d of the \u200ckey players in \u200cthe Democrats\u2019 latest crusade to achieve the top item \u2063on their policy agenda.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Meet the Key\u2063 Players<\/h2>\n<h3>Alvin Bragg<\/h3>\n<p>Manhattan District \u200bAttorney Alvin Bragg was the first prosecutor to land the coveted indictment of Democrats\u2019 Public Enemy No. 1. In April, the New York prosecutor unveiled a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnewyork.com\/investigations\/live-coverage-trump-pleads-not-guilty-to-34-count-manhattan-indictment\/4200743\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">34-count<\/a> indictment against Trump, carrying a maximum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/trump-faces-maximum-sentence-136-years-prison-34-count-indictment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">136-year<\/a> prison sentence. \u2062The charges \u200dstem from 2016 hush-money payments to porn actress Stormy Daniels in a case prosecutors previously \u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/03\/20\/arresting-trump-an-end-of-america-watch-party\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">declined<\/a> \u2063to pursue.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1002501279\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a40b37195a9e0de7b09dfd6a420f6d92 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a40b37195a9e0de7b09dfd6a420f6d92\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>[RELATED:[RELATED:<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/04\/10\/yes-the-statute-of-limitations-has-passed-on-braggs-get-trump-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yes, The Statute Of Limitations Has Passed On Bragg\u2019s \u2018Get \u2063Trump\u2019 Case<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Manhattan\u2064 charges, however, marked\u2064 the fulfillment of a campaign \u2062promise Bragg made\u200c two years ago to prosecute the former president. \u2062Prosecuting Trump was apparently the top issue of \u2062his platform in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBragg often reminded voters on the campaign trail that he helped sue the\u2064 Trump administration \u2018more than \u200da hundred times\u2019 as a deputy in the New York state attorney\u2062 general\u2019s office,\u201d Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/with-trump-probe-looming-democrats-vie-manhattan-district-attorney-2021-06-22\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> that year.<\/p>\n<p>The 50-year-old prosecutor\u2019s own supporters pointed to his\u200d ability to pursue Trump in court \u2064as a reason to back him. The New York Times reported on \u200cBragg\u2019s\u200d endorsement from a\u2063 former U.S. attorney in\u200d July 2021.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-734f7929bf689664c7d84867e146bc77 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-734f7929bf689664c7d84867e146bc77\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cPreet Bharara, a former United States attorney in Manhattan who supervised Mr. Bragg and endorsed \u2064his candidacy, said Mr. Bragg had varied experience as a prosecutor, and that his work on white-collar crime and public corruption cases could come into play in the investigation into Mr.\u200b Trump,\u201d the \u2063Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/07\/02\/nyregion\/alvin-bragg-district-attorney-trump.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">read<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bragg was also\u200b promoted to his current office with financial support from left-wing billionaire financier George Soros. The super PAC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/political-party\/color-of-change-pac\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">backed<\/a> by Soros, Color of Change, pledged to bankroll Bragg\u2019s\u200c campaign with a <a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/national-progressive-pac-plans-back-manhattan-da-candidate-alvin-bragg-1-million-cash-infusion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">seven-figure sum<\/a> in \u200cthe spring of 2021. Soon after the cash infusion, the committee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10490077\/Color-Change-pulled-500-000-funding-DA-Alvin-Braggs-campaign-allegation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pulled\u2064 back<\/a> \u2062$500,000 of the donation when Bragg faced allegations of sexual misconduct \u2062of his own.<\/p>\n<p>Bragg\u2019s record in \u200bNew York, meanwhile, has \u200bbeen one of unleashed crime while prosecutors pursue politicized investigations \u2062against the most \u200bpopular\u2062 Republican\u200c in\u200d the country. In a Wall Street Journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/why-i-support-reform-prosecutors-law-enforces-jail-prison-crime-rate-justice-police-funding-11659277441\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">op-ed<\/a> last year, Soros admitted to\u200d backing candidates who promised \u200bto be soft on crime, branded as \u201creform prosecutors.\u201d Bragg \u200chas held up to the pledge by prioritizing Trump instead of dangerous criminals. \u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/01\/05\/nyregion\/new-york-crime-stats.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According<\/a> to The New \u2064York Times, major crime spiked 22 percent during Bragg\u2019s\u200c first\u200b year \u2062in office.<\/p>\n<h3>Letitia James<\/h3>\n<p>While Bragg pursues \u2062criminal charges against the former president, New York Attorney General Letitia James has Trump in civil court \u200bon allegations\u2064 of fraud. In September last year, the attorney\u2064 general filed \u200ba <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/york-ag-letitia-james-files-250m-lawsuit-trump\/story?id=90240332\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$250 <\/a>million fraud suit with the state Supreme Court in Manhattan, accusing the former president of inflating corporate assets to obtain financial benefits.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a9d5f4595ff361ef703f18f7588f644a fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a9d5f4595ff361ef703f18f7588f644a\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe found that \u200dMr. Trump, his children, and the corporation used more than 200 false asset valuations over a 10-year period,\u201d said James at a press \u200dconference.<\/p>\n<p>James, 65, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/09\/26\/1201893212\/new-york-judge-order-letitia-james-trump-fraud-case#:~:text=A%20judge%20in%20New%20York,Democratic%20Attorney%20General%20Letitia%20James.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">won<\/a> in a partial summary judgment a year later, and in October, the trial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/donald-trumps-business-empire-peril-civil-fraud-trial-opens-new-york-2023-10-02\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">began<\/a> after the judge\u200d found \u200bthe Trump family, including Trump himself, liable \u2064for fraud. The judge in the case ordered the termination of \u2063Trump\u2019s New York business license\u2062 and will now examine charges by James to determine additional penalties. In October, an \u2064appeals court put a <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/court-battles\/4242026-trump-seeks-pause-in-new-york-fraud-trial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hold<\/a> on the judge\u2019s mandate \u2062to dissolve Trump\u2019s business in the state.<\/p>\n<p>The aggressive effort against the Trump family\u2019s New York business empire marks another campaign promise fulfilled by the state attorney general. Similar\u2064 to Bragg, James ran for office \u200din 2018 on a platform to\u2062 prosecute the president. \u2062When first campaigning\u2062 for the statewide job \u2064five years ago,\u200d James <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/09\/21\/james-lawsuit-trump-longstanding-battle-00058128\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">railed <\/a>against the Republican president as \u200d\u201cillegitimate\u201d\u200c and an \u200b\u201cembarrassment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNY Attorney General Letitia James has a\u2063 long history of fighting \u2062Trump and other powerful targets,\u201d headlined \u200ban Associated Press <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-fraud-new-york-letitia-james-lawsuit-a3a2c2569440c24bd5c5262103cb8390\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">profile<\/a> \u2064of James in September.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLetitia James fixated on Donald Trump\u2064 as she\u2062 campaigned for New York\u2064 attorney general,\u200b branding \u200bthe then-president a \u2062\u2018con \u2063man\u2019 and \u2018carnival barker\u2019 and pledging to shine a \u2018bright light \u2064into every\u2064 dark corner of his real estate dealings,&#8217;\u201d the AP reported.\u2063 \u201cFive years \u200clater, \u2062James is on the verge of disrupting Trump\u2019s real estate empire.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Arthur Engoron<\/h3>\n<p>The state-friendly judge presiding over James\u2019 civil lawsuit against \u2062Trump is a Democrat who held the former president in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/05\/20\/trump-pays-110000-fine-contempt-order-not-lifted-new-york-ags-office-says.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">contempt<\/a> last year \u200bover subpoena violations. Arthur Engoron is a judge in\u2063 the New York\u2063 Supreme \u200dCourt\u2019s 1st Judicial District who ran <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Arthur_F._Engoron\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unopposed<\/a> for the seat\u2062 in\u2063 the 2015\u2063 general election.<\/p>\n<p>In September, Judge Engoron <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/09\/27\/n-y-judge-cherry-picks-lowball-mar-a-lago-appraisal-to-find-trump-guilty-of-inflating-property-values\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">devalued<\/a> the former president\u2019s Mar-a-Lago Florida estate from between $426 million and $612 million, as estimated by the Trumps, to a mere $18 and $28 million.<\/p>\n<p><strong>[READ:[READ:<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/09\/27\/n-y-judge-cherry-picks-lowball-mar-a-lago-appraisal-to-find-trump-guilty-of-inflating-property-values\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">N.Y. Rush Limbaugh\u2019s former residence, for example, sold \u2063for <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/03\/09\/rush-limbaughs-palm-beach-home-sells-for-155m\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$155 million<\/a> despite a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-9274531\/Rush-Limbaughs-fourth-wife-Kathryn-44-set-inherit-51MILLION-Florida-mansion.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$51 million<\/a> appraisal. Mar-a-Lago, \u2064meanwhile, is the only property at Palm Beach to face the waterfront\u200c on both the\u200b ocean and the waterway.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Engoron also implemented a gag order to prevent Trump from even \u2062speaking out against the accusations against him. Trump was <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/10\/26\/new-york-judge-fines-trump-10000-for-benign-campaign-comment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fined<\/a> twice over violations of the gag order for a combined \u2063$15,000.<\/p>\n<h3>Jack Smith<\/h3>\n<p>Jack Smith, 54, a veteran prosecutor with\u2062 years spent at the Justice Department, was appointed last November to lead two of the federal\u200c efforts seeking Trump\u2019s conviction. Now special counsel in a pair of cases prosecuting Democrats\u2019 top political opponent, Smith was previously head of the DOJ public integrity unit from 2010 to 2015. Among his most notable cases was the prosecution of former Virginia Republican Gov. Robert McDonnell, whom\u200b the Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/former-virginia-governor-robert-mcdonnell-spared-prison-sentence-n599506\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">exonerated<\/a> of a bribery conviction in 2016. Smith was also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/trump-special-counsel-jack-smith-involved-lois-lerner-irs-scandal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">involved<\/a> in\u200c the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)\u200c tax scandal targeting conservative nonprofits.<\/p>\n<p>Now Smith is spearheading the federal government\u2019s criminal efforts against Trump regarding classified documents and the events \u200crelated to the Capitol riot \u200don Jan.\u200b 6, 2021. In\u200c June, Trump was <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/donald-trump-classified-documents-indictment-c15a5f36e4e83417805718d81a035441\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">indicted<\/a> \u2062 with 37 counts of mishandling \u2062classified information, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2023\/07\/27\/feds-add-new-charges-against-trump-in-classified-documents-case-00108667\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">three<\/a> more charges\u2063 handed down \u200din \u200cthe case about\u200c two months later. Smith <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/08\/01\/biden-delivers-another-blow-against-his-primary-political-rival-with-latest-trump-indictment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">indicted<\/a> Trump \u2062with an\u2062 additional four charges in a separate case this summer over objections to electoral certification, such as \u200bDemocrats have <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/06\/13\/second-j6-hearing-criminalizes-republicans-for-election-objections-after-democrats-made-them-for-decades\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">made<\/a> for decades.<\/p>\n<h3>Tanya Chutkan<\/h3>\n<p>Smith\u2019s team at the Justice Department could not have landed a more friendly judge in the government\u2019s Jan. 6 case against Trump than U.S. District Court Judge Tanya \u2063Chutkan. An <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/08\/15\/judge-tanya-chutkans-record-should-disqualify-her-from-presiding-over-trumps-j6-trial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">activist<\/a> judge with an obvious\u2064 animus against the \u200dformer president and his supporters, the Obama appointee was assigned to preside\u2064 over the \u200bpolitically fraught Jan. 6 case after building a <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-indictment-judge-tanya-chutkan-capitol-riot-9ba5c18d315697d759521425ea203012\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reputation<\/a> as \u201ca tough punisher of Capitol rioters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOther judges typically have handed down sentences that are more lenient than those requested by prosecutors,\u201d the AP reported. \u201cChutkan,\u2063 however, has matched or exceeded prosecutors\u2019 recommendations in 19 of her 38 sentences. In four of \u2064those cases, prosecutors \u2064weren\u2019t seeking any\u2063 jail time at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Trump complained \u200dthe federal charges against him amounted to election interference by\u2063 the DOJ, Chutkan\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/08\/11\/left-wing-judge-on-trumps-claim-political-prosecution-is-election-interference-so-be-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shrugged<\/a> off the accusations, saying, \u201cThat\u2019s how\u200b it has to be.\u201d Chutkan previously \u2062condemned comparisons between the Capitol turmoil and\u2062 the far-left riots that characterized the summer of 2020 in other rulings of pro-Trump demonstrators. The fiery riots, she <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-indictment-judge-tanya-chutkan-capitol-riot-9ba5c18d315697d759521425ea203012\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed<\/a>, were actually \u201cthe actions of people \u200dprotesting, mostly \u200bpeacefully, for civil rights.\u201d Chutkan said comparisons between the two \u201cignore[] a very \u200dreal danger that the Jan. 6 riot posed to the foundation of our democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In \u2064September, Chutkan predictably\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/09\/28\/of-course-judge-chutkan-wont-recuse-herself-from-trumps-j6-case-she-has-a-narrative-to-prove\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">denied<\/a> Trump\u2019s request to recuse herself from \u200dthe Jan. \u200c6 trial. In October, Chutkan handed down another <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/10\/16\/judge-bars-trump-from-campaigning-against-his-top-political-opponent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gag\u2063 order<\/a> to prevent\u2063 the president \u2062from speaking publicly and \u200bopenly about the case. On\u2062 Nov. 1, Chutkan handed down\u200c an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/681575255\/gov-uscourts-dcd-258148-126-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">order<\/a> allowing Smith\u2019s team to conceal evidence from Trump\u2019s attorneys that the DOJ\u2063 has identified as \u201cclassified.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Fani Willis<\/h3>\n<p>Fulton County District Attorney Fani\u2064 Willis in Georgia upset a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/crime\/early-results-show-fulton-da-challenger-in-the-lead\/X23G6PDMIFBVHJKYH6UVTQMQ54\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">six-term<\/a> incumbent when she defeated her former boss, Paul \u2064Howard,\u200b three years\u2062 ago. Willis, who beat Howard in the primary runoff, carried the general election unopposed after no Republicans \u2062qualified for the November contest.<\/p>\n<p>Willis\u2019 investigation of Trump \u200cand the former president\u2019s campaign team was one of \u200dher\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/fani-williams-investigate-trump-georgia-20aedf048bee46d8483abf5dc014da62\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first acts<\/a> \u2064 in office \u200cand will define her\u2062 legacy. In August, the DA for Fulton County, which covers \u200bmost of Atlanta, charged\u2063 Trump with 13\u200c counts related to the former president\u2019s efforts to protest aspects of the 2020 election.\u200d The Georgia prosecutor also indicted \u206218 Trump allies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/10\/26\/1197956023\/trump-allies-take-plea-deals-in-georgia-how-that-changes-the-case#:~:text=Handout%2FGetty%20Images-,Trump%2Daligned%20lawyers%20Sidney%20Powell%2C%20Kenneth%20Chesebro%20and%20Jenna%20Ellis,case%20against%20Donald%20Trump%20himself.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">several<\/a> of whom have taken plea deals.
