We\u2063 need a much more \u2063inclusive and engaging scientific process\u200d that\u2062 focuses attention on the unique features \u2062and beauty of the birds themselves,\u201d said AOS President Colleen Handel.\u00a0\u2063 \u201cEveryone who loves and cares\u2063 about birds should be able to enjoy and\u200b study them freely \u2014\u200d and birds\u2064 need our help now more than ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The AOS, established in 1883, plans to implement \u2062these changes starting \u200bin 2024.\u200b They will be \u2064working \u2064on\u2062 creating new \u200dnames for approximately 80 bird species\u200b in North America\u2064 and Canada.<\/p>\n<p>The\u2064 organization has also made several commitments to \u200bchange their operations and involve the\u200c public in the naming process.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<ul>\n<li>The AOS will change all \u2062English-language names of birds\u2063 named after people, as well as other offensive and\u200c exclusionary \u200dnames, focusing\u200b first on \u200dspecies primarily found in \u200bthe\u200c U.S.\u2063 or Canada.<\/li>\n<li>A\u200d new committee\u2064 will be established\u200c to \u200doversee the assignment \u200bof English common names, including individuals with \u2064expertise in social sciences, communications, ornithology, and taxonomy.<\/li>\n<li>The public will be actively involved in selecting new \u2063English bird names.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This decision comes in response to pressure \u2062from the birding community to address the use of\u200b names associated with racist historical figures.\u200c <\/p>\n<p>The AOS expects\u2062 this initiative to continue for months and years,\u2063 with up\u200d to 260 birds being examined \u2062throughout the Americas \u200cand related islands.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cAs scientists, we work to eliminate bias\u2064 in science. But there has been historic\u200d bias in \u2063how birds are named, and who might \u200dhave \u2063a bird named in their honor.
