Ohio has never ⁤repealed a constitutional provision that was enacted by initiative, ‍and it’s unlikely to do so. On November 7th, Ohioans will have ⁤the opportunity to⁣ vote on Issue 1, a measure that⁤ aims ⁢to amend the Ohio Constitution and grant an ‍unrestricted “right” to abortion throughout all nine months of pregnancy. This ballot measure, which has been crafted and funded⁣ by outside‌ activists, has the potential to bring about fundamental and permanent changes in ‍the way ‌the state operates.

If passed, Issue 1 will not only give the abortion industry a free pass to end unborn ⁢lives and⁤ infringe upon parents’ rights, but it will also have far-reaching implications for the state of Ohio. Megan⁤ M. Wold, former deputy solicitor general in the Ohio attorney general’s office, emphasized that this vote is not ‍against Ohio’s current⁤ laws on abortion but rather a vote for a new legal regime‍ that would strip voters of the ability to enact common-sense abortion laws in the future, even those similar to those in Western Europe.

The ⁣Ohio Capital Journal has published several articles claiming that a “yes” vote on ‌the amendment is merely ⁤a way⁢ to reaffirm the ⁤state’s existing 22-week‍ abortion law and reject a supposedly controversial six-week ban without exceptions for rape or incest. However, this characterization‌ of ⁢Issue 1 is misleading and does not reflect the true nature of the amendment.

Wold explained that Issue 1 ⁤goes beyond establishing a ‌right to obtain an abortion and instead creates an entire‌ legal framework governing abortion in Ohio. If passed, the constitutional amendment would immediately‍ replace any existing laws,‌ including the state’s current 22-week abortion ⁣limit. This would have implications for late-term abortions, unethical abortion practices, and parental notification laws, among others.

The authors of ⁣this ballot measure designed it in ‍such a way that ⁢it ensures abortion‌ in Ohio ⁤can never be adequately restricted, despite overwhelming opposition from Ohioans. They included undefined terms‍ like “individual” and “reproductive decisions,” which can be easily expanded to‌ include more than just adult women or abortion. According to groups like the American Policy Roundtable, if Issue 1⁢ is passed, it can be exploited to justify a multitude of actions beyond what is currently intended.

It ⁤is crucial for voters in Ohio ⁢to‌ be aware of the potential consequences of their vote on Issue 1.
