George Santos<\/h2>\n<p>The House of Representatives \u2064shot down another attempt to expel\u2062 Rep. \u2064George Santos (R-N.Y.) on Nov. 1, this time led by his fellow New York Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution to expel Mr. Santos, introduced last week by \u2064Rep. Anthony D\u2019Esposito (R-N.Y.), was the second to come up for a vote this year after Democrats tried to oust the embattled congressman \u2063in May.<\/p>\n<p>At that time, Republicans blocked the move by \u2064referring the resolution to the House Ethics Committee for its ongoing investigation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Related \u2062Stories<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3>Rep. A two-thirds majority was required \u2064for it to pass.<\/p>\n<p>Mr.\u200d Santos garnered national attention late last year\u200c when he admitted to fabricating his resume to get elected. He now\u200b stands accused of 23 federal crimes, including conspiracy, money laundering, wire fraud, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/pair-of-spring-breakers-in-fla-charged-over-suspected-rape-of-woman-found-dead-in-hotel-room\/\" title=\"Pair of spring breakers in Fla. charged over suspected rape of woman found dead in hotel room\">credit card fraud<\/a>, \u2062false statements, and\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/he-fraudulently-claimed-coronavirus-relief-funds-then-faked-his-suicide-to-avoid-prosecution-now-hes-agreed-to-plead-guilty\/\" title=\"He Fraudulently Claimed Coronavirus Relief Funds, Then Faked His Suicide To Avoid Prosecution. Now He\u2019s Agreed To Plead Guilty.\">aggravated identity theft<\/a>,\u200c among others.<\/p>\n<p>A trial has been \u200btentatively scheduled for next September.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the vote, the congressman maintained his innocence of the allegations\u2063 against him, charging that\u2063 his colleagues were targeting him for\u200b political gain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis\u2064 expulsion, unfortunately, is politically motivated by some \u2062members within this body,\u201d he said on the House \u200bfloor. \u201cThey believe that by attempting to expel me they will\u200c garner political points, capitalize on political fundraising, and receive congratulations from those who do not approve of my voting record.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">And that\u2019s \u2064a claim the congressman has repeated on social media. In \u2063an Oct. 30 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MrSantosNY\/status\/1719136200727081388\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">X post<\/a>, he pointed to an <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JakeSherman\/status\/1719129663870497226\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">email<\/a> from Mr. D\u2019Esposito\u2019s campaign soliciting donations to support his fight against Mr. Santos\u2064 as evidence.<\/div>\n<p>\u201cNow tell me \u200dit\u2019s not political!\u201d he wrote. \u201cI won\u2019t stop\u2064 fighting for conservative values, unlike some who are making their career based on attacking me and fundraising off of it. That\u2019s why I have a 100% conservative voting record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But on the House floor, Mr. D\u2019Esposito disputed the allegation that the move was political, asserting that he would\u2063 have \u2063put forward\u200c the resolution \u2062regardless \u200bof whether he represented \u201ca bright red district \u200cor \u2063the brightest of blue districts.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\u201cThis is\u2063 about doing the right thing,\u201d he continued. \u201cIt\u2019s about putting this institution\u2064 first, and\u2063 it\u2019s about giving the \u200cpeople of the 3rd Congressional District the opportunity\u2064 to be represented.\u201d<\/div>\n<h2><strong>Fitness for Office<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The resolution was backed by several other \u2063New York Republicans who felt that Mr. Santos\u2019s admitted dishonesty, combined with the accusations against him, made him unfit to \u200bserve as \u200ba U.S. representative.<\/p>\n<p>Among those congressmen was Rep. Mike\u200b Lawler, who rose to defend the measure on the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t expel a\u2064 member for being a\u200c jerk. You don\u2019t expel a member for something they said. You expel a member for their conduct,\u201d he noted. \u201cThe conduct of Mr. Santos has been embarrassing and unbecoming and unfit for public office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Santos, however, stressed his right to \u200bdue process.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\u201cI \u200dhope\u2063 that my colleagues come to their senses and recognize that perilous consequences of a trial by media\u200c is damaging,\u201d he \u200csaid. \u201cThe loss of the presumption of innocence establishes a dangerous precedent that threatens the very foundation\u2063 of our legal system and we risk losing the trust\u2063 that the American people \u2064have placed\u2064 in\u2064 us\u2064 by passing\u200c judgment without \u200bdue process.\u201d<\/div>\n<h2><strong>Ethics Probe<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A day before the vote,\u200c the \u2064House Ethics Committee \u200dreleased a statement on the status of its eight-month probe, noting \u200bthat it continues to \u201cexpeditiously review\u201d the allegations against Mr. Santos.<\/p>\n<p>Thus far, the committee\u2019s\u200d investigative efforts have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/house-votes-down-attempt-to-expel-rep-george-santos\/\" title=\"House rejects motion to expel Rep. George Santos\">involved contacting roughly 40 witnesses<\/a>, reviewing more than 170,000 \u2064pages of documents, and issuing 37 subpoenas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Committee\u2019s nonpartisan staff and\u2062 the ISC [Investigative Subcommittee] Members have put countless hours into this investigation, which\u200d has been a priority for the investigative team and involved a significant amount of the Committee\u2019s resources,\u201d the \u200cpanel added.<\/p>\n<p>The committee is expected to\u2064 announce its next steps on or before Nov. 17. It remains to be seen whether it will recommend further action.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. John Rutherford (R-Fla.), who sits\u2064 on the Ethics Committee, said he voted present, citing the panel&#8217;s upcoming report on Mr. Santos.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s the due process that Santos has,&#8221; Mr. Rutherford told The Epoch Times after the\u200d vote. &#8220;So I think a lot of \u200bpeople are like, well let&#8217;s just wait till we get the report and\u200d then make \u2063a decision.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), who voted against the expulsion attempt, argued that it was too early to make the move given\u2062 the pending criminal \u2062case.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Due process and the courts matter, so leave it to the courts,&#8221; \u2063Mr. Roy\u2063 told reporters after the vote.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With \u2062all due respect to my New York colleagues, I&#8217;m not interested in playing politics with somebody&#8217;s legal situation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> How does the recent vote in the House regarding Mr. Santos&#8217;s expulsion \u2062reflect the divisions and disagreements within the Republican Party<\/h2>\n<p><span>  Believe in the American principles of fairness and justice,\u201d\u200d Mr. Santos stated. \u201cI believe in the \u2062presumption of innocence until proven guilty. I \u200bhave faith in our legal\u2064 system to determine the truth and I am confident that I will \u200cbe cleared\u200c of these false charges.\u201d<\/div>\n<h2><strong>The Ethics Committee Investigation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The resolution to\u2063 expel Mr. Santos was referred to the House Ethics Committee, which has been conducting an investigation into the allegations against him since May.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">During the committee&#8217;s investigation, several witnesses testified, including individuals who claimed to have evidence of Mr. \u200cSantos&#8217;s wrongdoing.<\/div>\n<p>However, critics\u2062 argue that the committee&#8217;s investigation has been slow and insufficient.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe committee has had more than enough time to conduct a thorough investigation into the serious allegations against Mr. Santos,\u201d said Rep. Nicole\u200b Malliotakis (R-N.Y.). \u201cIt is clear \u200dthat the committee&#8217;s failure to take decisive action is\u2062 a disservice to the American people and undermines the integrity of the House.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Supporters of Mr. Santos believe that the ongoing investigation should have been allowed to run its course before any attempt to expel him.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\u201cIt is premature and unfair to expel a member of Congress based on allegations alone,\u201d said Rep. Andrew\u200b R.\u200b\u2063 Garbarino (R-N.Y.). \u201cWe must respect the \u200bprocess and wait\u2062 for the conclusion of \u200cthe Ethics Committee investigation before making any decisions.\u201d<\/div>\n<h2><strong>The Future for\u200b Rep. George Santos<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>With the latest attempt\u2062 to expel him rejected by the\u200c House, Mr. Santos can continue to\u200c serve as a U.S. \u2063representative.
