Statements from the leaders of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/10\/28\/russia-says-israeli-bombardment-of-gaza-is-against-international-law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/livecoverage\/israel-hamas-war-palestinians-news\/card\/erdogan-cancels-israel-visit-says-hamas-is-liberation-group--UpmrekmLq6E8qe3hSqSU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Turkey<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/10\/27\/middleeast\/iran-may-not-want-full-war-israel-mime-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Iran<\/a> since have only appeared to strengthen this possibility.<\/p>\n<p>So what should be the Christian response?<\/p>\n<p>First, for some\u200d perspective, the No. 1 nonfiction <a href=\"https:\/\/200.hc.com\/timeline\/1970-zondervan-publishes-the-number-one-nonfiction-bestseller-of-the-decade\/#:~:text=The%20Late%20Great%20Planet%20Earth,nonfiction%20bestseller%20of%20the%20decade.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bestseller<\/a> \u200d of the 1970s was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Late-Great-Planet-Earth\/dp\/031027771X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Late Great\u200b Planet \u200bEarth<\/a>\u201d (1970) by Hal Lindsey.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/ia803207.us.archive.org\/5\/items\/TheLateGreatPlanetEarthByHalLindsey\/The%20Late%20Great%20Planet%20Earth%20by%20Hal%20Lindsey_text.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">book<\/a>, Lindsey contended that we\u200c were in the end times, pointing to the establishment of Israel in 1948 along with the general turmoil on the planet at the time: the Cold War with the potential for World War\u200c III, seemingly increasing famines and \u200bearthquakes, and\u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/christian-leaders-determined-not-to-repeat-biggest-mistake-from-jesus-revolution\/\" title=\"Christian leaders vow to avoid repeating past errors of 'Jesus Revolution'.\">general societal unrest<\/a> and\u200b devolution.<\/p>\n<p>Lindsey could see the\u200b battle of Gog and Magog coming in the not-too-distant future, with the menacing Soviet Union (now Russia) looking to move into the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>So many Christians were of the mindset that the\u200b end times were upon them,\u2063 and the rapture of the church from this earth was imminent, that it blunted the positive impact the most recent major spiritual awakening\u2063 could have had\u2064 on American society.<\/p>\n<p>No \u2063one can be sure how many\u200c came \u200bto faith in Christ \u2064during the Jesus People movement\u2062 of the late \u200c1960s and early 1970s, but estimates put it in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.premierchristianity.com\/features\/jesus-revolution-the-60s-hippies-who-changed-the-world\/3787.article#:~:text=Now%20that%20the,people%20become%20Christians.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hundreds of thousands<\/a> and\u2064 perhaps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gotquestions.org\/Jesus-Movement.html#:~:text=At%20the%20height%20of%20the%20Jesus%20Movement%2C%20adherents%20were%20estimated%20to%20number%20anywhere%20between%2030%2C000%20to%203%20million%20people.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">millions<\/a>. The film \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/revival-may-coming-jesus-revolution-film-captures-time-us-history-like-awakening-followed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jesus Revolution<\/a>,\u201d released in February, portrayed\u2062 this turbulent yet powerful\u200d time in American history.<\/p>\n<p>Ch\u00e9 Ahn, pastor\u200b of Harvest Rock Church\u2063 in Pasadena, California, and head of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harvestim.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harvest International Ministry<\/a>, became\u200d a Christian during the Jesus\u2064 People movement.<\/p>\n<p>Ahn, who recently authored the book \u2063\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/TURNING-OUR-NATION-BACK-GOD\/dp\/B09TV1VW3D\/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3M69NBYYRBSTN&#038;keywords=TURNING+OUR+NATION+BACK+TO+GOD%3A+Through+Historic+Revival&#038;qid=1698873918&#038;s=books&#038;sprefix=turning+our+nation+back+to+god+through+historic+revival%2Cstripbooks%2C214&#038;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Turning Our Nation Back to God Through Historic Revival<\/a>,\u201d observed that during \u200bthe Jesus People movement, \u2062the\u200b harvest of new converts to Christianity came in, but the reformation of society did not\u200d follow due to bad eschatology, \u2064i.e., teaching about the end times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat eschatology is that\u2064 things will\u200c get worse and then Jesus [will] rapture\u200c us out of here,\u201d he \u2063told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/christian-leaders-determined-not-repeat-biggest-mistake-jesus-revolution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Western Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not the theology of the early church fathers or the\u2063 reformers of [the Protestant Reformation] or the Great Awakening of [Charles] Wesley, [George] \u200b Whitefield or Charles Finney in the Second Great Awakening in 1801,\u201d Ahn\u2062 continued. \u201cThey believed that you\u2064 could transform America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Great Awakening of the 1730s and \u201940s helped \u200cunify America and undergirded its decision to trust God \u200cand declare independence\u2063 from Great Britain. The Second Great Awakening\u2064 of the \u200cearly to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dont-let-end-times-thinking-divert-attention-from-what-gods-trying-to-do-on-earth-now\/\" title=\"Stay focused on God's current work on Earth, don't be distracted by end times thinking.\">mid-19th century birthed<\/a>\u200c the abolition movement, \u200dwhich led to the end of slavery in the U.S., Ahn argued.<\/p>\n<p>Michael \u200dMaiden, pastor of \u200cChurch\u2063 for the Nations in Phoenix and author of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Turn-World-Upside-Down-Discipling\/dp\/0768438853\/ref=sr_1_1?crid=22JLUE5RE45P0&#038;keywords=Michael+Maiden+turing+world+upside+down&#038;qid=1698780776&#038;s=books&#038;sprefix=michael+maiden+turing+world+upside+down+%2Cstripbooks%2C112&#038;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Turn the World Upside Down: Discipling the\u2063 Nations with the\u2064 Seven Mountain Strategy<\/a>,\u201d shared Ahn\u2019s view that teaching about the end times blunted the potential reformational\u200c impact\u200c of the Jesus People\u2062 movement 50 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe primary focus of so much of that \u200bera was \u2018come to Christ,\u2019 and because things in the \u201960s and \u2064early \u201970s were very turbulent, both nationally and globally, \u2064people just said, \u2018Well, Christ is coming back soon,\u2019\u201d recalled Maiden, whose father pastored a Jesus People church in Phoenix.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t worry about becoming doctors\u2064 or lawyers. Don\u2019t worry about education. Don\u2019t worry about getting into the various parts of society.\u200c Don\u2019t worry about becoming \u2026 a \u200cjudge or a\u200b CEO or starting a business because the Lord\u2019s going to come back,\u201d he said was the general mindset.<\/p>\n<p>There was short-sightedness among believers, Maiden told The Western Journal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were great churches in cities that were\u200b falling apart because the\u200b churches didn\u2019t see \u2064their assignment to affect the rest of the city,\u201d he\u2063 explained. The church \u2062needed \u2064to step in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe principles of God\u2019s Word never fail. And \u2063so when they\u2019re applied in life and family and business and society, they always work,\u201d Maiden argued.<\/p>\n<p>The pastor does\u2063 believe we are in the end times, but he offered a cautionary note.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are a lot of things \u200bhappening that could point us to \u2026 the end times,\u201d Maiden said. \u201cThe only\u200b caveat is 2,000 years ago Peter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts+2%3A14-21&#038;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> \u2062that we\u2019re in the end times on the day of Pentecost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Christian leader pointed to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+24&#038;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">words \u200bof Jesus<\/a> regarding the end times: There will be \u201cwars \u200cand rumors of wars\u2063 \u2026 but the \u200dend\u200d is not yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maiden highlighted that even with\u2062 all\u200c the turmoil going on in the world, great things are happening in the kingdom of God, with people \u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/celebrity-tattoo-artist-kat-von-d-gets-baptized-discarding-witchcraft-books-turning-christ\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coming to\u2063 Christ<\/a> and cultures being \u2062transformed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, the world\u2062 is becoming intense in its darkness, but the kingdom of God \u200cis becoming glorious in its light,\u201d the preacher said. \u201cLight always triumphs over darkness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hal and Cheryl Sacks, leaders of the Arizona-based ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgebuilders.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BridgeBuilders International<\/a>, think God is presently allowing the earth\u200d to be shaken.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe what God\u2063 is doing is putting the heat on and making us more desperate for him,\u201d said\u2062 Hal, who also \u200dcame to faith during the Jesus People movement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntil the light decides to wake up and get back out there because they\u2019re anointed\u200b of God \u2026 we\u2019re just going to continue to be overrun by darkness,\u201d he asserted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRevivals \u2064generally explode in times of darkness and trial, not in times of comfort\u200d and ease,\u201d Cheryl stated. \u201cAnd we are in desperate times, \u2062and that is causing people to wake up to see there\u2019s a problem. \u2018We\u2019re going in the wrong\u200c direction. We\u2019re not finding any answers.\u2063 Let\u2019s reach out to God.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ahn believes the world is \u201con the verge of the\u200d greatest revival.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere\u2019s what Scripture says in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=haggai+2%3A7-9&#038;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Haggai 2:7<\/a>: \u2018I\u2019m going to shake\u200d all nations.\u2019 So there\u2019s going to be a global shaking with all the nations,\u201d the pastor said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018It will come \u2064with the wealth of the nations.\u2019 So \u2026 in the midst of the shaking God\u2019s going to be blessing his people,\u200d including Israel. And then\u200b the third thing is,\u2063 \u2018I\u2019m\u2063 going to fill this house with glory.\u2019 That\u2019s revival language,\u201d Ahn\u2063 continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then verse 9 says, \u2018The glory of the latter house will be greater than the glory of the\u2063 former.\u2019 And the principle there is \u200cthat always we go from glory to glory. That\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2+corinthians+3%3A18&#038;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2 Corinthians 3:18<\/a>. The principle is that in the last days will be the greatest revival to sum up\u2062 the harvest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So we know we\u2019re \u200cat some point in\u2064 the end times, but we don\u2019t\u200c know \u2064where.<\/p>\n<p>As I noted above, many Christians \u2063in the 1970s thought the return of Christ was imminent and pulled back from\u2063 engaging fully in society. We can see the results of that \u2063all around us \u200dnow.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew%206%3A9-13&#038;version=KJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">instructed<\/a> his disciples to pray to the Father, \u201cThy kingdom come, Thy will be done on \u200cearth as it is in heaven.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u2063 mission of the church is to be the \u2062church, discipling\u2062 nations\u200d and running right through the finish line.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div class=\"author_subscription_pitch\">.author_subscription_pitch p{margin:5px;}<\/p>\n<p><em><b>A Note from Our Deputy\u2064 Managing Editor:<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I walked into the office one\u200c morning and noticed something strange.
