Orange Countians would finally start to enjoy professional \u200bball games when Anaheim Stadium officially opened in 1966 as the Angels made their way south.<\/p>\n<p>In 2002, the Angels would rock\u200c the house in game seven of the World Series, defeating the San\u2062 Francisco Giants 4 to\u200d 1 at home in Angel Stadium\u2014their only World Series championship win to date. I\u2019m sure \u2063every fan\u200c was honking their car horns all the way back to their\u200b homes. As someone lucky enough to be at that game, I know I did as I drove down\u200b my street.<\/p>\n<p>Orange County also produced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/this-mlb-player-is-doing-something-that-hasnt-been-done-since-babe-ruth\/\" title=\"This MLB Player Is Doing Something That Hasn\u2019t Been Done Since Babe Ruth\">major league pitcher<\/a> of significance in Walter Johnson. Born in 1887, he is noted for pitching a \u206415-inning game as a Fullerton Union High School student against Santa Ana High \u200cSchool, garnering 27 strikeouts. The young man from Brea would\u2063 go on to\u200b set a major league record of 3,508 strikeouts that would hold for 55 years.<\/p>\n<p>In 1924, Walter Johnson found himself in the World Series pitching for the Washington Senators. He lost two games. The drama is provided in the Ken Burns series, \u201cBaseball \u2013 4th Inning: A National Heirloom.\u201d On Oct. 10, Johnson was brought in to close the seventh\u200d game. He would do\u200b it. But\u2064 it would\u200d take \u200cuntil the 12th inning to\u200d beat the New York Giants 4 \u200cto 3.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h2>Baseball Legends Collide<\/h2>\n<p>Three weeks later, on Oct. 31, Walter Johnson would play an exhibition game with many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/white-house-spins-bidens-all-star-game-remarks-he-didnt-definitively-say-he-supported-moving-all-star-game-from-georgia\/\" title=\"White House Spins Biden\u2019s All-Star Game Remarks: He Didn\u2019t Definitively Say He Supported Moving All-Star Game From Georgia\">major league baseball players<\/a>.\u2064 He found himself pitching against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/sports\/the-years-of-the-babe-how-2-of-todays-best-players-have-brought-babe-ruth-back-to-life-4733045\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Babe Ruth<\/a> in a ballpark called the Brea Bowl. The small city, the eighth to be incorporated inside the borders\u200c of Orange County, would \u2063host thousands of guests\u200b to view \u201cThe Big Game.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"post-figure\" style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"aligncenter\"><figcaption>  \u2063New York Yankees power batter Babe Ruth is seen in 1923. He was a national treasure at the time, and it was a big deal for him to come to\u2063 Brea. \u2062Remember, there were \u200dno major freeways then, not even transcontinental flights, making a long train ride and vehicle shuttle a requirement. \u200cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ochistoryland.com\/population#:~:text=1920%2061%2C375%201924%2091-96%2C000,%28Santa%20Ana%20Register%2C%204-11-1924%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Santa Ana Register<\/a> \u200dnoted that the entire population of Orange County was between 91,000 and 96,000 at that time.<\/p>\n<p>This ball game was a very big deal. Unfortunately for locals, Ruth hit two home runs against Johnson, and his team celebrated a massive victory. But\u2062 regardless of the outcome,\u200d plan on making a pilgrimage to the Brea Museum and Historical Society as \u200bit celebrates the \u2062centennial of this historical \u2062event in 2024. You\u2019ll love seeing the\u2062 photos of that era.<\/p>\n<p>It would take another 34 years before \u2063residents in and around the city of Brea would be able to observe a \u200c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/watch-los-angeles-democratic-mayor-eric-garcetti-booed-at-dodgers-home-opener\/\" title=\"WATCH: Los Angeles Democratic Mayor Eric Garcetti Booed At Dodgers Home Opener\">major league baseball game<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There is plenty of evidence to\u2064 prove that Orange Countians love\u200c baseball. Ocean View Little League would win the Little League World Series in 2011, the only Orange County team to do so since this international event began in 1947. The National Association\u200c of Intercollegiate Athletics world series would begin in \u200d1957, with Concordia University Irvine\u200c winning \u200din 2011, also \u200cthe only Orange County team to do so.<\/p>\n<p>Since the early 1950s, Orange County Mustang, Colt, Bronco, PONY,\u200c and\u2062 Palomino teams have won 18 World Series in these divisions since \u20641970 (1970, 1971,\u200d 1983, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, \u200b1999, 2003, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2012, 2022, 2022, and 2023). Cities with winning teams include Anaheim, Buena Park, Fountain Valley, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, Irvine, Los Alamitos, Mission Viejo, Orange, Placentia, and Tustin.<\/p>\n<p>The County\u2019s community colleges also have an impressive history of winning the California Community College Athletic Association championships. \u200dStarting in 1956, Orange Coast College has won seven times (1956, 1960, 1980, 2009, 2014, 2015, \u2064and 2019); Cypress Community \u200cCollege five times (1991, 1994, 1997, 2003, and 2013); Rancho Santiago Community College three times (1993, \u200c1995, and 1996); and Saddleback Community College won it once in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) \u200cDivision One Baseball Tournament World\u2063 Series began in \u20621947 and California State University\u2062 Fullerton won it in 1979, 1984, 1995, and \u200c2004,\u200d competing against 63 other colleges\u2062 around the\u2064 nation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n  <em>For others\u2064 who also enjoy sports history, a new PBS program, \u201cOrange County\u2062 History Hunters,\u201d an <a href=\"https:\/\/ocworld.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OC World \u200dProduction<\/a> \u2064will be\u200b featured on KLCS at 5:00 p.m. every Monday. Its pilot features a small portion of the\u200d subject of\u200b baseball in Orange County and provides the history provided in \u2062this piece and much more.
