Version: 4.0.47--><h2>Few would argue that America is going through some challenging\u2062 times at the moment, but it just might be the gateway to revival and, God-willing\u2062 reformation.<\/h2>\n<p>People are looking for hope and many are \u200dstarting to find it in Jesus and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/1300-turn-christ-mississippi-crusade-god-working\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pockets of revival<\/a> are beginning to \u2063break \u2063out throughout the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/christian-revival-explodes-spreads-like-wildfire-college-campuses-around-united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">country<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The most\u200c prominent example of this was\u200d at \u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/breaking-24-7-revival-comes-end-university-13-days-50k-people-flock-town\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Asbury University<\/a> in Kentucky \u2062in February, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.cbn.com\/news\/us\/20000-join-asbury-revival-weekend-explosion-outpouring-will-now-be-moved-campus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tens of thousands<\/a> poured into a small college town to experience God\u2019s presence on a\u2062 24\/7 basis for weeks on end.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, in the very <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbury.edu\/academics\/resources\/library\/archives\/history\/asbury-revival\/#:~:text=In%20February%201950%20a%20student,that%20went%20out%20from%20it.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">same month in 1970<\/a>, a similar outpouring happened at\u2063 Asbury during the heart of the Jesus People\u2064 movement.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">    PIRATE\u2019S COVE<\/p>\n<p>The waters of baptism signify death to living for ourself, and raising \u2062to new life with Christ.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some\u2063 pictures \u200bfrom the \u2064largest baptism in US history which took place yesterday at Pirates\u200b Cove, \u200cthe historic site of the Jesus Movement in Southern\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cWyW677SlW\">pic.twitter.com\/cWyW677SlW<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Matt Brown (@evangelistmatt) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/evangelistmatt\/status\/1678157111669276673?\">July\u200d 9, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The film \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/revival-may-coming-jesus-revolution-film-captures-time-us-history-like-awakening-followed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jesus Revolution<\/a>,\u201d released in February, portrayed this turbulent, yet powerful time in American\u2062 history.<\/p>\n<p>No one \u200bcan be sure how many \u200dcame to faith in Christ during that era during the late 1960s and \u200dearly 1970s,\u2064 but estimates put it in\u2062 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.premierchristianity.com\/features\/jesus-revolution-the-60s-hippies-who-changed-the-world\/3787.article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hundreds of thousands<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gotquestions.org\/Jesus-Movement.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">perhaps millions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">What a difference 5 years\u200c makes. In 1966, Time asked, \u201cIs God Dead?,\u201d then in 1971\u2062 Time ran \u201cThe \u200bJesus Revolution\u201d \u2064cover after revival had\u200d broken out\u2063 nationwide \u2064during the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Jesus?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Jesus<\/a> movement.<\/p>\n<p>Is the same happening in our day? <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Asbury?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Asbury<\/a> \u2062 had a \u200cbig-time revival back then too. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vIohLk3t5S\">pic.twitter.com\/vIohLk3t5S<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Randy DeSoto (@RandyDeSoto)\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RandyDeSoto\/status\/1628099534646841344?\">February 21, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Western Journal\u2063 spoke\u2063 with four Christian leaders who came to faith or were greatly impacted by the \u200dJesus People movement, and one\u200b thing they agreed\u2063 on is that the biggest \u2063lament is that it did not move from a revival into a broader societal reformation.<\/p>\n<p>Ch\u00e9 Ahn \u2014\u2062 pastor of Harvest Rock Church in Pasadena, California,\u2062 and head\u2064 of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harvestim.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harvest International Ministry<\/a>, who became \u200ca Christian during the Jesus People movement \u2014 is the author\u200d of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/TURNING-OUR-NATION-BACK-GOD\/dp\/B09TV1VW3D#:~:text=He%20wrote%20Turning%20Our%20Nation,the%20power%20of%20God%27s%20Kingdom.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Turning Our Nation Back to\u200d God: Through History Revival<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ahn points to two\u2064 examples of U.S. revivals\u200c that \u200bresulted in societal\u2062 reformation.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2064first was the Great Awakening, which \u2063began in the late 1730s in New England and spread throughout \u2064the 13 colonies over the next decade fueled by the itinerant preaching of George Whitefield among\u200c others.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/OTD?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#OTD<\/a> May 3, 1738<\/p>\n<p>English preacher \u2064George Whitefield, 23, first arrived in America. In all, Whitefield crossed the Atlantic \u206213 times, \u2062and died in Massachusetts in 1770, during his seventh visit.<br \/>\nIn his lifetime, Whitefield preached at\u2063 least 18,000 times\u200b to \u200capprox 10M hearers. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4P6mxWPj0z\">pic.twitter.com\/4P6mxWPj0z<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 \u2627 Today in Christian \u200cHistory (@HistoricalRook)\u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HistoricalRook\/status\/1653697699084902400?\">May 3, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAnd because he was also preaching liberty \u2063and freedom\u2026it led, I believe, to the Declaration of Independence in \u200b1776,\u201d Ahn said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/levin-cites-ben-franklin-argue-gop-needs-stay-focused-biden-admin-enemy-republic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Benjamin Franklin<\/a>, who helped draft the\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/providence-jefferson-adams-died-50th-anniversary-declaration-independence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Declaration<\/a>, was a big fan and business partner of Whitefield, \u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/24445536\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">publishing<\/a> book \u2063compilations of his \u200dsermons.<\/p>\n<p>Franklin wrote in his <a href=\"https:\/\/teachingamericanhistory.org\/document\/george-whitefield-preaches-in-philadelphia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">autobiography<\/a> that he once conducted an experiment to estimate how many people could hear Whitefield\u2019s booming voice. During an outdoor gathering \u200bin\u2064 Philadelphia, he kept backing \u2063away\u200b until he\u2063 could no longer hear the preacher and then calculated the number of people \u2062who could be \u2062within earshot was over 30,000.<\/p>\n<p>Franklin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalhistory.uh.edu\/disp_textbook.cfm?smtID=3&#038;psid=1278#:~:text=It%20was%20wonderful%20to%20see,of%20every%20Street.%20.%20.%20.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> of \u200cthe impact of the Great Awakening, \u201cIt was wonderful to\u200c see the Change soon made in the Manners of our Inhabitants; from being thoughtless or indifferent about Religion, it\u2063 seem\u2019d\u2062 as if\u200d all the World were \u2062growing Religious; \u200cso that one could not walk thro\u2019 the Town in an Evening without Hearing Psalms sung in different Families of every Street.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/black-history\/abolitionist-movement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Second Great Awakening<\/a> in \u2064the U.S., which began around 1800 and lasted until the 1830s, helped\u2064 launch the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crf-usa.org\/images\/pdf\/the-second-great-awakening.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abolition movement<\/a> that led\u200d to the end of slavery.<\/p>\n<p>During the Civil War, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/words-abraham-lincoln-condemn-entire-nevertrump-lincoln-project-goal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Abraham Lincoln<\/a> would sign\u200c the Emancipation Proclamation \u200bfreeing the slaves in\u2064 the southern states then \u2064in \u200drebellion against the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>The Republican-led Congress would follow that up \u2064with the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments freeing all the slaves, \u200cand guaranteeing \u200dthem\u200d equal protection under \u2064the law and the right to vote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd so revival\u200c led \u2062to the transformation of\u2062 America, ending slavery and giving rights to all people,\u201d Ahn said. \u201cAnd so \u200cyou see the foundation of revival\u200d leading\u2064 to reformation of society, reforming institutions like the government, education, \u200bobviously, business. Every sector of society was transformed.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Ahn \u2062observed that during the \u2062Jesus \u200cPeople movement in the late \u200d1960s and early 1970s, the harvest of new\u200c converts to Christianity came in, but reformation did not follow due to \u201cbad eschatology,\u201d i.e., teaching about \u2062the end\u2064 times described in the Bible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo that eschatology is that things will \u200dget worse and then Jesus rapture us out of here,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not the theology of\u2064 the early church fathers or the reformers of 1517 [Protestant Reformation] or the Great Awakening of [Charles] Wesley, [George] Whitefield or Charles\u200d Finney in the Second Great Awakening in 1801,\u201d\u200b Ahn continued. \u201cThey believed that you could transform \u200bAmerica.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ahn noted\u2063 Hal Lindsey\u2019s \u2064book \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Late-Great-Planet-Earth\/dp\/031027771X\/ref=sr_1_1?hvadid=580750529999&#038;hvdev=c&#038;hvlocphy=9030010&#038;hvnetw=g&#038;hvqmt=e&#038;hvrand=6566189219570147587&#038;hvtargid=kwd-345489245&#038;hydadcr=22567_13493270&#038;keywords=the+late+great+planet+earth&#038;qid=1698787142&#038;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Late Great Planet Earth<\/a>\u201d (1970) was the <a href=\"https:\/\/200.hc.com\/timeline\/1970-zondervan-publishes-the-number-one-nonfiction-bestseller-of-the-decade\/#:~:text=The%20Late%20Great%20Planet%20Earth,nonfiction%20bestseller%20of%20the%20decade.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">No. 1 nonfiction\u200c bestseller<\/a> of the decade. Its central message was that end time Bible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/game-changing-bible-prophecy-may-come-true-based-events-just-north-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prophecy was coming<\/a> true as evidenced by the rebirth of Israel in \u20631948.<\/p>\n<p>Lindsey also pointed to the turmoil \u200con the earth \u200bat the time with the menacing Soviet Union during the Cold War \u200band the potential for\u200b World\u2063 War III, famines, \u2062earthquakes, and general societal unrest as evidence the return of Christ was\u2063 near.<\/p>\n<p>The time period was also marked by anti-Vietnam War protests,\u200d race riots, and a general questioning by the youth of the previous generation\u2019s traditional values.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Maiden \u2014 pastor of <a href=\"https:\/\/cftn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Church for the Nations<\/a> in Phoenix and author of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Turn-World-Upside-Down-Discipling\/dp\/0768438853\/ref=sr_1_1?crid=22JLUE5RE45P0&#038;keywords=Michael+Maiden+turing+world+upside+down&#038;qid=1698780776&#038;s=books&#038;sprefix=michael+maiden+turing+world+upside+down+%2Cstripbooks%2C112&#038;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Turn the World Upside Down: Discipling the Nations with the Seven Mountain Strategy<\/a>\u201d \u2014 shared Ahn\u2019s view that teaching about the end times blunted the potential reformational impact of the Jesus People movement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe primary focus of so much of that era was come to Christ, \u200cand because \u2062things\u2063 in the sixties and early \u2062seventies were very turbulent, both nationally and globally, people just said, \u2018Well Christ is coming \u2062back soon,&#8217;\u201d recalled Maiden, whose father pastored \u200da Jesus People church in Phoenix.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t worry about becoming doctors or \u2062lawyers. \u200cDon\u2019t worry about education. Don\u2019t worry about getting \u200dinto various parts of\u2063 society.
