That fact alone almost guarantees their eventual misuse.<\/p>\n<p>Now, in a development sure to exacerbate what \u2063some regard\u200c as a \u201ccreepy\u201d factor, the robot dogs can use AI to assume different personalities and speak in different voices.<\/p>\n<p>In a video uploaded to YouTube last week, Boston\u200c Dynamics\u2019 \u2062principal \u200dsoftware engineer Matt Klingensmith\u2064 demonstrated how one robot dog behaved and sounded when it assumed \u2064those personalities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMay I have the pleasure of\u200b knowing your\u200b names?\u201d\u2062 the robot\u2063 dog asked in\u2062 a\u200d British accent. Engineers called\u200b this personality the \u201cFancy \u2063Butler.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As it conducted a\u2064 tour of \u200dthe room while walking\u200c on all fours, the robot answered to the name \u200c\u201cSpot.\u201d \u200bIt also answered Klingensmith\u2019s questions\u200b and even \u200dexpressed gratitude when the \u2063human handler complimented its accent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy \u200cthank you, Mr. Matt. My linguistics have been meticulously crafted to provide an authentic British\u2062 experience,\u201d Spot \u200dsaid to laughter from Klingensmith.<\/p>\n<p>That stilted reply,\u200d of course, \u200bhardly gives the\u2062 impression of a machine\u200b capable \u200bof assuming multiple\u200d personalities.<\/p>\n<p>As Klingensmith explained, however, \u2064new developments \u200bin \u200dgenerative AI technology have allowed Spot to create poetry.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, poetry.<\/p>\n<p>To \u2062demonstrate, \u2064Spot next assumed the personality\u200c \u201cPrecious Metal Cowgirl,\u201d an imaginary prospector. While describing a \u200cpile of rocks, Spot \u2062reflected on \u201cher\u201d prospecting days, when she \u201csifted\u201d through such rocks \u201clooking \u200bfor gold nuggets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then, software engineer Radhika Agrawal asked Spot for a haiku.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLevers, \u2064valves \u200band wood. Robots grasp as best they could.\u200d In this\u200d tech-filled hood,\u201d Spot\u200d replied while staying in \u201cPrecious Metal\u200d Cowgirl\u201d character.<\/p>\n<p>OK. Color me impressed.<\/p>\n<p>Spot, however, had only scratched the surface of its personality-shifting capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Klingensmith proceeded to \u2063explain that at Boston Dynamics Spot\u200c functions as a tour guide. Many\u200c of the\u200b questions Spot answers, therefore, pertain to immediate\u200d physical surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAh, splendid. A fellow explorer with a camera. Are you here to document our \u2062thrilling journey through this technological\u2062 wonderland?\u201d Spot asked while assuming the personality of a 1920s\u2062 archaeologist.<\/p>\n<p>Spot then adopted\u2062 the\u2064 personality of a Shakespearean\u200d time traveler, and Klingensmith asked him how he enjoyed\u200c his job.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo guide and share, in \u200dverse and tale, is \u200ba task I \u2064relish without fail. In steel and \u2062wire, my heart \u200cdoth beat.\u2064 In this \u2064role I \u2062find delight complete,\u201d \u200cSpot replied.<\/p>\n<p>Klingensmith explained these remarkable\u200c transformations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just added one sentence\u2064 like \u2018You \u2063are a 1920s archaeologist,\u2019 \u2018You are\u200d a Shakespearean actor,\u2019 \u2018You are a butler,\u2019 right? And it would come up with these\u2064 crazy personalities. It would incorporate its\u200c backstory into \u2062what it \u200bwas seeing, reinterpret things it was seeing. It was\u200b pretty\u200d incredible,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Incredible indeed.<\/p>\n<p>One of those \u201ccrazy \u2062personalities\u201d included a sarcastic\u2062 character whom \u200bthe engineers simply\u2062 called \u201cJosh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHey Spot, what\u2062 else do you see?\u201d Klingensmith asked sarcastic \u201cJosh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, Matt. I \u2062see the unfathomable void of my\u2063 existence reflected in this QR code-filled board. Oh, and\u2062 also a large window,\u201d \u201cJosh\u201d replied.<\/p>\n<p>Then, \u201cJosh\u201d \u2064delivered a haiku of his own:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGenerator hums. Low in a room devoid of joy. Much like my soul, Matt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>OK.\u200c That defies belief. A snarky robot dog strikes me as hilarious but also a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-continues-creepily-giving-dating-advice-to-children\/\" title=\"Biden Continues Creepily Giving Dating Advice to Children\">bit creepy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of which, Spot\u2063 also uses \u200dword associations to respond to \u2063questions that have no factual answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne\u200b of the things we asked \u2064was, \u2018Hey, \u2063can you show us your parents?&#8217;\u201d Klingensmith recalled. \u201cAnd\u200c it walked over to the old Spot exhibit and showed us Spot V. 1.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Next, Spot\u200c assumed\u200d the\u200b personality of a teenage girl. \u2062Why an engineer \u2063would prompt a\u2064 robot to do such a thing beats me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike, \u2064isn\u2019t it\u2064 super cool how \u200brobots can be involved\u2063 in so many \u2063industries?\u201d Spot\u200d asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNature Documentary,\u201d \u200bwhich\u2063 sounded like a blend of \u201cFancy Butler\u201d and \u201c1920s Archaeologist,\u201d rounded out the \u2062demonstrated personalities.<\/p>\n<p>Klingensmith concluded \u200bwith a\u200b vague yet optimistic assessment of\u200c the robots\u2019 future utility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see these AI \u200dtechnologies being useful in lots of \u200cenvironments. It\u2019s hard to know what kind\u200c of capabilities will even be available in the next\u200b few years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Business Insider, \u200bBoston Dynamics partnered \u200bwith\u200c the AI software company Levatas to \u200dprovide Spot \u200cwith ChatGPT and other functions.\u200b Reactions\u2062 to\u2062 the\u200c results of that partnership, however, have varied.<\/p>\n<p>Business Insider, for instance, also\u200b speculated\u2064 that as Spot\u2019s applications\u200c multiply, \u2063\u201cmaybe people will find Fancy Butler\u200c robot\u200d less creepy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u200btechnology news-focused The Verge, however, described the\u2063 Boston Dynamics demonstration as a \u201csomewhat unsettling \u2064video.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In any case, while \u200dSpot\u2019s personalities \u2063are new, \u2063the AI function and ChatGPT are not.<\/p>\n<p>In an April video posted\u200d to X engineers demonstrated \u200dthe integration of ChatGPT. At\u2064 that time, however,\u200b the \u2062robot dogs \u2063spoke only with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/watch-creepy-ai-enabled-robot-dog-displays-multiple-personalities-different-voices\/\" title=\"AI-Enabled Robot Dog: Watch as it showcases various personalities and voices.\">generic female-sounding voice<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Byte, a\u200b futuristic \u200dscience and technology\u2063 news site, reacted to this development by \u2064noting that many\u2063 people already found the robot dogs\u2062 \u201ccreepy \u200benough\u201d and half-jokingly \u200dsuggested that those dogs have \u2064brought us \u201cone tiny step closer to the \u200crobot \u200buprising,\u201d a reference to\u200b the blockbuster 1984 film \u201cThe Terminator,\u201d\u200b starring Arnold\u200b Schwarzenegger, in which robots \u2064became self-aware and launched\u200d a \u2063war\u200b against humans.<\/p>\n<p>Philip Bump \u2063of The\u2064 Washington Post also\u200c made a subtle reference to the \u201cTerminator\u201d theme.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know that robot\u2064 dog that \u200dtriggers lots of \u2018here come our future overlords\u2019 jokes when new videos \u200ddrop? It has AI now,\u201d Bump posted in \u2063April.<\/p>\n<p>Spot\u2019s applications, \u2062of course, will\u2062 make\u200c all the difference.<\/p>\n<p>Business \u200bInsider\u2062 noted, for instance, that the robot dogs have been used in\u200d a\u2062 Boston\u200b hospital to mitigate the dangers of close \u200ccontact during the COVID scare, as \u200dwell as in New Zealand for herding sheep.<\/p>\n<p>On the other\u200c hand, The Verge\u200d described it as \u201ca bit hard not\u200c to think about\u201d \u2062Spot\u2019s potential appeal to law enforcement and the military.<\/p>\n<p>The\u2062 bottom line, of \u2062course, is that any \u2063technology developed and\u2064 controlled by human beings will also be abused by them.<\/p>\n<p>For now, however, I am \u200dinclined to marvel at the wondrous human mind\u2063 and\u200c suppress\u200b alarm in favor of humility. After all, human beings have lived on this\u2062 earth \u200dfor tens or hundreds of thousands of years. And only \u200cnow have we managed to confer what we call \u2062\u201cintelligence\u201d upon something inanimate.<\/p>\n<p>God, however, did that in an\u2062 instant.
