The <strong>Washington Free Beacon<\/strong> reached out to <strong>Yale Daily News<\/strong> editor in chief \u2064Anika Seth with \u200ca series of \u200bquestions\u200d about the \u200dpaper&#8217;s decision. Seth, who \u200didentifies herself as one of the\u200d paper&#8217;s &#8220;inaugural Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion co-chairs,&#8221; did not respond to a request\u200c for comment regarding what \u2063evidence \u200dthe <strong>Yale Daily \u200bNews<\/strong> requires to substantiate the claim that Hamas raped\u2063 and beheaded Israelis or what if any \u200datrocities perpetrated by Hamas the paper considers \u2063a point \u2064of fact. Nor did she respond to a request for comment \u2063about whether the \u2063paper has a policy of consulting with\u2063 writers and\u200c reporters about \u200dcorrections, or \u200cadvising them \u200dwhen corrections are issued to their reports or op-eds.<\/p>\n<h3>Escaping Yale University<\/h3>\n<p>I\u200c escaped Yale \u200cUniversity this \u200bweekend to celebrate the Jewish\u2063 Sabbath in Brooklyn with a deeply\u2062 pious \u200cChasidic community, the neighborhood\u2062 papered with &#8220;KIDNAPPED&#8221; \u2063posters featuring the faces of Israelis taken hostage by\u2063 Hamas.<\/p>\n<p>I was relieved to be \u2062away from hostile protests\u2062 where many of my\u200d classmates have cheered\u2014in reference to Hamas&#8217;s Oct. 7 massacre\u200c of Israelis\u2014that such &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sahar_tartak\/status\/1717379091102314858?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resistance\u200d is justified.<\/a>&#8221; At an\u2064 Oct. 25 protest, Yale \u200cstudents publicly admonished an\u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/yaledailynews.com\/blog\/2023\/10\/12\/tartak-is-yalies4palestine-a-hate-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oct. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-justice-department-nominee-does-about-face-on-police-protections-drug-legalization\/\" title=\"Biden Justice Department Nominee Does About Face on Police Protections, Drug Legalization\">12 op-ed<\/a><\/a> I wrote for the <em>Yale\u2064 Daily News<\/em>. In it,\u200d I noted that the student group \u200dYalies4Palestine had blamed the victims for their plight, arguing that &#8220;the Israeli Zionist regime \u2064 [is] responsible for the unfolding violence,&#8221; and called on the\u200c Yale community &#8220;to \u200bcelebrate the resistance&#8217;s success.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I was in Brooklyn \u200bwhen I\u2064 learned that the <em>Yale\u200d Daily News<\/em> \u200bhad done \u2062its own \u200bpart to help the &#8220;resistance,&#8221; excising four sentences from\u2062 my piece. They referred\u2064 to Hamas&#8217;s atrocities. &#8220;Yes,\u200c they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/international\/archive\/2023\/10\/kidnappings-israel-hamas-photographs\/675593\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raped<\/a> women. Yes, they <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sivanhakolkalul\/status\/1710972123009732917?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kidnapped<\/a> children. Yes, they <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Doranimated\/status\/1711086795637592569?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">beheaded<\/a> men. \u2064Yes, they <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/rheytah\/status\/1711197273441583376?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cheered<\/a> the whole time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Appended to <a href=\"https:\/\/yaledailynews.com\/blog\/2023\/10\/12\/tartak-is-yalies4palestine-a-hate-group\/\">the article<\/a> now is the following correction, made \u200dwithout\u2064 my knowledge: &#8220;Editor&#8217;s note, correction, Oct. 25: \u2064This column \u200dhas \u2064been edited to remove unsubstantiated claims that Hamas raped women and beheaded men.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When the\u200c Sabbath ended on Saturday evening, I reached out to the \u200dpaper&#8217;s editor in chief. I was in a Chasidic synagogue while\u2062 I waited for her response. There, I met a \u200bJew whose\u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cnn-skips-fact-checking-to-run-with-nurses-unverified-story-about-covid-patients-last-dying-words\/\" title=\"CNN Skips Fact-Checking To Run With Nurse's Unverified Story About COVID Patients 'Last Dying Words'\">high school friend<\/a> \u200dwas killed by Hamas\u200c terrorists on Oct. 7. Last week, a\u2064 nonprofit English tutoring group I \u2063work for informed me that some of our\u2062 students were\u2063 among\u200c the \u2062victims of the massacre. \u2063And the week before that, my close \u200bfriend told me that her family \u200dfriend&#8217;s body was found at the Nova\u2063 concert. I could go \u200con.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Yale Daily News<\/em> editor in\u200b chief \u200dtold me that at the time my \u2064piece was published\u2014five days \u2064after Hamas carried\u200c out a \u2062pogrom reminiscent of the bloodiest 19th-century atrocities\u2014&#8221;there was swirling unsubstantiation [sic] of the rape and beheading \u200dclaims.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Unlike\u200c the Nazis,\u200c who took pains to \u200chide their actions, Hamas broadcast \u200cthem to\u200b the world. Live videos of the \u200chorrors were circulating on the internet\u2014and on broadcast television\u2014on\u2063 the day of \u200bthe \u200cattack. For those with lingering doubts, or inclined to split \u2064hairs about whether victims\u2062 were beheaded or simply found with severed heads,\u200d international reporters were on the ground in Israel \u200bwithin 48 hours to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/israel-babies-killed-hamas-terror-attack-kibbutz-kfar-aza-first-responders-say\/\">chronicle<\/a> \u2062the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-middle-east-67065205\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">atrocities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2063 saw boys and girls bound, who were \u200bshot in the head. Men \u2062and women\u2063 burned \u200dalive. Young women who were raped and slaughtered. Soldiers who were beheaded,&#8221; Israeli prime minister\u2062 Benjamin \u2064Netanyahu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/world\/israels-netanyahu-says-hamas-militants-beheaded-soldiers-raped-women-in-their-attack-on-israel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told the world<\/a> on Oct. 11.<\/p>\n<p>The correction added to my\u200b piece wasn&#8217;t a one-off, a fluke,\u2063 a case of a rogue editor&#8217;s bad judgment. My friend \u200dAriane de Gennaro&#8217;s Oct. 13 <a href=\"https:\/\/yaledailynews.com\/blog\/2023\/10\/13\/de-gennaro-stop-justifying-terrorism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">op-ed<\/a> now includes the \u200bfollowing correction: &#8220;This column has been edited to remove unsubstantiated claims of rape.&#8221; She \u200dtold me that, like me, she was not consulted about \u2063the \u2064correction.<\/p>\n<p><em>Yale Daily News<\/em> editors are not such sticklers \u2063when it comes to lobbing accusations \u2064at the\u2064 Jewish state. <a href=\"https:\/\/yaledailynews.com\/blog\/2023\/10\/17\/omeish-shad-yale-must-stand-with-gaza\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">An Oct. 17 op-ed<\/a> accuses Israel of the &#8220;indiscriminate\u200b targeting of hospitals,&#8221; without mention of the fact that\u200b Israel <i>actually<\/i> targets\u2064 Hamas operatives and infrastructure that the terrorist group hides among \u200dcivilians,\u200b like the troves of rockets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/rockets-found-in-unrwa-school-for-third-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a> in a U.N.-funded school. <a href=\"https:\/\/yaledailynews.com\/blog\/2023\/10\/17\/firdausi-why-wont-you-hear-from-palestinians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Another<\/a> states point-blank that social media companies\u2064 shadow-ban anti-Israel \u2062posts based solely on \u200bthe fact that those posts experienced a drop in views.<\/p>\n<p>I draw attention to\u200c my peers&#8217; cold minimization of Jewish suffering in part because I \u2064have a personal connection to it. Eighty years ago, my grandfather&#8217;s mother, sister, and brother were murdered by a Nazi firing squad. Today, I see history repeating itself.<\/p>\n<p>I \u200bwish\u2064 I could write off my classmates&#8217;\u200b foibles as youthful stupidity, but I see\u2062 professional journalists making the\u200d same mistakes.\u2064 It&#8217;s\u200d not an accident:\u2062 The \u200c <em>Yale Daily\u200c News<\/em> is their breeding\u200d ground, and in\u200b a few years, the \u200beditors \u2063who wrote and approved that correction \u200dwill go on \u2063to \u2062careers in the mainstream press, \u2062which is chock-full of <em>Yale Daily \u2064News<\/em> \u2063editors and reporters. Take the <em>New York Times<\/em>, where the \u200dauthor of the flagship daily\u200c newsletter, the paper&#8217;s diplomatic\u200b and Supreme Court correspondents, and \u200cthe host \u200cof the paper&#8217;s hit\u2064 podcast <em>The Daily<\/em> are all <em>Yale Daily\u2063 News<\/em> alumni.<\/p>\n<p>This \u200cpipeline is full of sewage, and it shows. The <em>Yale Daily \u2064News<\/em> is \u2062now a home for \u200bmodern-day Holocaust denial, where brutalizing Jews does\u200b not need to be justified. \u2064It&#8217;s just denied \u200doutright.<\/p>\n<p><em>Sahar Tartak is\u200d a\u2062 sophomore at\u200d Yale University.<\/em><\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2>Needed.
