Symptoms of lead exposure include\u200b headaches, abdominal pain, vomiting, anemia, muscle \u200baches, irritability,\u2063 and fatigue, the agency\u200c said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<h2>Investigation Reveals WanaBana Puree Pouches as the Source of Lead Hazard<\/h2>\n<p>After it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncdhhs.gov\/news\/press-releases\/2023\/10\/28\/ncdhhs-urges-caution-after-reportable-lead-found-wanabana-brand-apple-cinnamon-puree#:~:text=PRESS%20RELEASE%20%E2%80%94%20The%20U.S.%20Food,contain%20elevated%20levels%20of%20lead.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emerged that<\/a> multiple children had elevated levels of lead in their blood in North Carolina,\u2062 an investigation was \u2062triggered.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>A child\u200d under 6 with two \u200cconsecutive blood \u200dlead test results of 5 micrograms\u200d per deciliter (\u00b5g\/dl)\u200b or higher qualifies \u2062for a home investigation by the North Carolina health agency and local health departments to find the lead source.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It \u2062was during several such investigations that \u200cthe WanaBana \u2064brand of apple cinnamon puree pouches was identified as the likely\u2064 source \u2062of \u2064lead hazard,&#8221; the North Carolina Department of Health and\u2063 Human Services (NCDHHS)\u200d said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>North\u2063 Carolina health authorities said\u200b that multiple lots of WanaBana apple cinnamon \u2062fruit \u2062puree were analyzed, and \u200dofficials found &#8220;extremely high concentrations \u2062of lead.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The FDA has reviewed\u2064 and supports NCDHHS\u2019\u2063 findings\u2063 and issued\u200b a voluntary recall of all WanaBana apple \u200bcinnamon fruit \u2063puree pouches regardless of lot \u2064code or expiration,&#8221; NCDHHS said.<\/p>\n<p>Parents \u2062with WanaBana brand apple cinnamon puree \u200bproducts in their\u2063 homes should dispose\u2064 of them immediately, and \u200bunder no circumstances should they\u200d eat them \u2062or feed\u200b them to their children, the\u2064 agency said.<\/p>\n<p>It also urged parents\u200c to discuss \u200dblood lead testing with their medical provider if they&#8217;re concerned about their child, with the NCDHHS recommending \u200cthat all children get tested for lead during their well-child visit at age 1\u2064 and again at age 2, a time in a child&#8217;s development when hand-to-mouth behavior is highest.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<h2>Lead Dust in Focus<\/h2>\n<p>Exposure \u2062of children to lead is \u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/new-federal-rule-could-force-millions-of-homes-and-schools-to-remove-lead-dust-5394051\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in the crosshairs<\/a> of the \u2063U.S. Environmental \u2062Protection Agency (EPA), which on July 11 announced new proposed rules \u200cfor lead paint in a bid to prevent hundreds of thousands of youngsters from being exposed to the toxic\u2064 substance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Officials predict that the rule \u2063will reduce lead exposures \u200dfor\u200d 250,000 to 500,000 children\u200d younger than the age\u200c of 6\u200d each year, \u200dthe agency said in \u200ba statement.
