However, as we\u2019ve been\u2063 reminded over the past few weeks during the\u200c Israel-Hamas conflict, the freedom of speech does\u2063 not necessarily\u200d equate to <em>intelligent<\/em> speech, particularly\u200c on\u2062 matters of life, \u200bdeath and military aggression.<\/p>\n<p>Musk, thank ye\u2063 heavens, isn\u2019t dim\u200b enough to throw his lot in with the Hamas barbarians like\u2064 so\u200b many collegians are (until, \u200bof course, their\u200c post-graduation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/litigation\/davis-polk-revokes-jobs-harvard-columbia-law-students-over-statements-israel-2023-10-17\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">job offers are revoked<\/a> \u2014 then they <em>never even saw\u200d the letter their group signed, <\/em>honest!).<\/p>\n<p>However, any conflict that involves <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/nyt-admits-hamas-supplies-civilians-desperately-need-squad-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hamas<\/a>, Hezbollah \u2062or Israel by nature pulls\u200b Iran into the \u200bpicture. Tehran is one\u200d of Hamas\u2019 sugar daddies, Hezbollah is little more than a terrorist proxy\u200b for the ayatollahs and Israel is Iran\u2019s\u200c sworn\u200d enemy \u2014 especially since, before the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/reporter-holds-back-tears-witnessing-1-10-residents-killed-hamas-attack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">horror\u200c that was unleashed<\/a> in\u2062 the Hamas attack of Oct.\u200b 7, the Israelis were close to making \u200cpeace \u2063with Tehran\u2019s Sunni Muslim adversaries, \u2064particularly Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<p>This is \u2064the TL;DR version of why Iran feels so\u200b threatened \u200dby the current geopolitical situation, but there \u200care even \u2063shorter versions of why Iran feels threatened by Israel \u200dand its \u2063allies \u200d\u2014 \u200bnamely the United States. Musk \u200bapparently buys into this.<\/p>\n<p>But, \u200bas the legendary journalist and cynic H.L. Mencken\u2063 pointed out,\u200b \u201cFor every complex problem there is an answer that is\u200d clear, simple,\u2064 and wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elon, lo and behold, \u2064had hit upon it.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, \u2063Musk posted a \u2064meme that showed the country <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/iran-president-says-israel-crossed-red-line-warns-coming-will-involve-everyone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">of Iran<\/a> surrounded\u200b by American flags\u200c that were supposed to represent U.S. military\u2062 bases: \u201cIran wants war,\u201d\u2063 the image read.\u200d \u201cLook how close \u200dthey put their country\u2062 to our military bases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh\u200b the Irany\u2026\u201d Musk\u200d captioned the\u200c image.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Oh the Irany\u2064 \u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/a1x9hFgJ0Y\">pic.twitter.com\/a1x9hFgJ0Y<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1718192456838107162?\">October 28, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Not that U.S. military bases around\u200b Iran would be a bad thing from \u200can American perspective; even \u200cbefore \u200dthe collapse of the Soviet Union, the \u2064Tehran\u200c regime was one of America\u2019s most dangerous geopolitical foes. The\u200d problem is that the graphic is, well, \u200cwrong. Very wrong.<\/p>\n<p>For one, as\u2062 journalist Shayan Sardarizadeh of the BBC pointed out: \u201cThe US does\u2062 not have military bases in\u200b Pakistan, Afghanistan\u200b and \u200cTurkmenistan.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The US does\u200c not have military bases in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/hZpurdCq43\">pic.twitter.com\/hZpurdCq43<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Shayan Sardarizadeh (@Shayan86) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Shayan86\/status\/1718282814272012775?\">October 28, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Furthermore,\u2062 as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/elon-musk-iran-map-us-military-bases-misinformation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Wrap<\/a> reported, a community context note was added \u2062that pointed\u2062 out the graphic dramatically exaggerated the number of U.S. bases in the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven the military bases \u200bthat do exist in the Middle East are not nearly \u2063as many as the post would have you believe. This exaggerated flag-based approach is alarmist. This\u2062 post is misleading,\u201d the community note stated.<\/p>\n<p>While the note\u2064 was no longer present as\u200d of early\u200d Monday\u200b morning, \u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/elon-musks-twitter-ceo-linda-yaccarino-christian-execs-app-phone-may-clue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Musk<\/a> acknowledged his faux pas.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-conversation=\"none\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I love getting Noted \u2013 proves \u200cthat no one is free from\u200b being corrected!<\/p>\n<p>This is\u2062 obviously a joke meme, but there\u2063 is more than a grain of\u200d truth to\u2064 it. We should \u2062aspire to see \u2062things from the point \u2062of view of others.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h3>First, this was not \u201cobviously a joke meme.\u201d\u200d Nor, in fact, is the sentiment behind it a joke\u2064 \u2014 as Musk seems to intimate when he says social media keyboard warriors \u201cshould \u2064aspire to see things from the point of \u2062view of others.\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>Let\u2019s \u2062leave\u200c aside that \u200dI have no desire to see \u201cthe point of \u200bview\u201d of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-iran-gets-brutal-surprise-protests-reignite\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">repressive regime<\/a> \u2062that tortures and kills \u2064its\u2063 own people for wanting basic freedoms and, on\u2064 the foreign policy \u200dstage, \u2063obviously \u200bseeks \u2063to obtain a nuclear weapon and \u2063has played an active role\u2062 in terrorism throughout \u2062the Middle East, including through Hamas and Hezbollah.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Musk sounds like Dan Rather trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/top-50-examples-liberal-media-bias\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">justify his role<\/a> \u200cin smearing former President George \u2062W. Bush for his alleged non-service in the\u200b Texas Air\u200b National Guard by using\u2064 obviously faked\u2063 documents to support\u2064 his case: \u2064Sure, \u200bthe documents might be bogus, Rather <a href=\"https:\/\/danratherjournalist.org\/about-dan\/controversies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>, but \u2064\u201c[t]he\u200d story was true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From what one \u200ccan glean from his public statements, it\u2019s\u200d clear Musk \u200bis a proponent of containing burgeoning geopolitical conflicts before they go global. He\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/elon-musk-turn-off-ukraine-militarys-internet-ceo-says-made-major-move-prevent-ww3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">taken that\u200c line<\/a> \u2064 with Ukraine and he\u2019s clearly\u200b taking that tack with Israel, Hamas and Iran, from\u200c the \u2063looks\u2062 of things.<\/p>\n<p>One\u2063 can do that in good faith, even if I would disagree with the assessment. \u200cOne is <em>not<\/em> doing that in good faith\u200d when\u2062 he re-posts memes that falsely claim the United States has\u200c a military presence in countries like Pakistan, Turkmenistan and Afghanistan \u2014 \u2063especially when the American military\u200b rather conspicuously fled the last \u2063country like a bank \u2062robber\u2064 in a getaway car.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, thankfully Capn.
