Matt Gaetz \u200b(R-Fla.),\u2062 who \u200dousted former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) in early October, said in \u200da \u200ctelevised interview.<\/p>\n<p>President Trump himself backed\u200b Mr.\u200c Johnson&#8217;s bid for\u2062 speaker and celebrated his election, calling him \u201cMAGA MIKE JOHNSON!\u201d\u2062 in\u2063 a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/why-this-average-american-is-voting-for-donald-trump\/\" title=\"Why This Average American Is Voting for Donald Trump\">social media post<\/a> on \u2063Oct. 25.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-figure\">\n<figure style=\"width:600px\" class=\"aligncenter\"><figcaption>  House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.) said earlier about the \u200dRepublicans\u2019 fumbling search for a speaker candidate. \u201cThis has been about who can appease Donald Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) picked up the nickname in a speech on the\u200b Senate floor. \u201cIf Speaker Johnson lives\u2062 up to the label that Congressman\u200d Gaetz has given him, \u200bMAGA\u200b Mike, he \u2064will fail as the previous speakers have.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>While these pronouncements characterize \u2064Mr. Johnson\u2019s election as a win\u200d for \u2064the right flank of the Republican conference, others say that the realities of leadership will drive the new\u2064 speaker\u200b to\u200c take a more\u200c pragmatic approach with a view to getting things done.<\/p>\n<h2>How Conservative\u200c Is\u200c Johnson?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<p>In his first major interview after\u200b becoming speaker, Mr. Johnson ticked a number \u2064of conservative boxes.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding gun violence, \u2064he said: &#8220;It\u2019s not guns, it\u2019s not the weapons. \u200bAt the end of the day, we have to protect the right of\u200d the\u200d citizens \u2064to protect themselves and that\u2019s the Second Amendment. And that\u2019s why our party stands so strongly for \u2064that.&#8221; Mr.\u200b Johnson added that the country\u200d needs to strengthen its approach\u2064 to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/97-8-of-mass-shootings-are-in-gun-free-zones\/\" title=\"97.8% of Mass Shootings Are in Gun Free Zones\">treating mental illness<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On President\u2064 Joe Biden\u2019s record, Mr.\u200b Johnson said,\u200b &#8220;I think it&#8217;s been a failed presidency\u200c and all the problems &#8230; here\u200b were caused by policy choices, and that&#8217;s the problem I have with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new \u2062speaker is a\u2064 pro-life, \u201cBible-believing Christian,\u201d and \u200bhe opposes gender transition treatment for\u2064 minors.<\/p>\n<div class=\"shortcode\"><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"mb-4 flex flex-col gap-4\">\n<div class=\"flex gap-3\">\n<div class=\"flex-1\">\n<div class=\"relative\" style=\"padding-bottom:66.67%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"text-comp-caption text-[14px] leading-[18px]\">Pro-life\u2062 activists participate in\u200c a \u2062Celebrate Life Day Rally at \u2063the\u200d Lincoln Memorial in Washington on June\u2062 24, 2023. Mr. Johnson\u2019s lifetime score is 90 percent, hardly a significant difference.<\/p>\n<p>For comparison, Rep. Mike\u200b Lawler (R-N.Y.), who represents a moderate district in upstate New York, scored 84 percent. Rep.\u200d Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.), who voted to oust the former speaker, scored 82\u200b percent.\u2064 The average House Democrat rated just \u200c2 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Swing district Republicans, who\u2064 might have reason to be wary of a hardline leader, spoke well of Mr. Johnson upon \u2064his election. \u201cHe\u2019s a humble\u200c man, has earned\u2064 my trust, and will \u200clisten to \u2062the voices of those \u2062I \u200crepresent in upstate N.Y.,\u201d Rep. Mark \u2062Molinaro (R-N.Y.) wrote on X, \u200cformerly known \u2062as Twitter.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<h2>Governing Style<\/h2>\n<p>Republicans sometimes labeled &#8220;hardliners&#8221; are those who tend to be more insistent on their\u2064 positions, less patient, and less\u2062 willing\u200c to accept compromises\u2014they are also suspicious of the way the House usually operates.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Other Republicans, sometimes pejoratively tagged &#8220;RINOs&#8221; (&#8220;Republicans \u2064in name only&#8221;), generally take a more \u200dpractical \u200dview of governing. They\u2019re willing to settle for smaller \u2062victories, which \u2063they believe will \u2062add up \u2062over time.<\/p>\n<p>To those suspicious of the way \u200cWashington\u200d usually operates, Mr. Johnson is seen as a welcome change. \u201cThe\u200b K Street lobbyists &#8230; this is not their candidate. This is the people&#8217;s candidate. He&#8217;s not the one that they wanted, but he&#8217;s the one \u2062that\u200d America needs,\u201d Mr. Burchett said.<\/p>\n<p>Yet Republicans who are sometimes criticized \u200bas being part of \u201cthe swamp\u201d supported the new speaker also, including former Speaker Kevin\u2064 McCarthy (R-Calif.), who referred to \u2063him as\u200d a \u201cprincipled conservative who can get the job done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMike is a strong leader who has the \u200cfull support of our entire \u2064Conference,\u201d Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) said in a statement. \u201cHe is a\u2063 great man and will\u200d make a great speaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his acceptance speech, Mr. Johnson outlined his government philosophy, which spoke directly to the matter of compromise.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2023\/10\/27\/id5518532-1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cOur people\u200d are losing their faith \u200cin government. &#8230; I think we have to be \u2064mindful of that,\u201d he\u200c said. \u201cWe&#8217;re going to fight\u200b vigorously over our core principles because\u2064 they&#8217;re \u200bat\u2063 odds a lot of times \u2064now in this modern era. We have to sacrifice sometimes our preferences\u200b because that&#8217;s what&#8217;s necessary in \u200da legislative\u200c body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In any\u2064 case, House speakers are almost always \u2064pragmatic decision-makers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpeakers are not in the\u200d habit of putting bills on the floor \u2063that will fail,\u201d Mr. Dusty Johnson\u200c told The Epoch \u200cTimes. \u201cI \u2064think this allegation that\u200b there&#8217;ll be a number of votes on\u200b the floor that divide\u2063 the Republican conference\u200c because they are too conservative\u200c isn&#8217;t really based in history.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"shortcode\"><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"mb-4 flex flex-col gap-4\">\n<div class=\"flex gap-3\">\n<div class=\"flex-1\">\n<div class=\"relative\" style=\"padding-bottom:66.67%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"text-comp-caption text-[14px] leading-[18px]\">House\u200b Republicans applaud\u2063 as Rep. \u200cMike \u2063Johnson (R-La.) (Alex Wong\/Getty Images)<\/div>\n<div class=\"bg-comp-divider h-px\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><\/div>\n<p>Speaking of hardliners who take an all-or-nothing\u2062 approach to governing, Mr. Gingrich said, \u200b\u201cI think some of \u2062these guys don&#8217;t\u200c understand the concept of being effective.\u201d Mr.\u2064 Johnson\u2019s voting record seems to indicate that he does.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Johnson voted \u2062in favor of the agriculture appropriations\u2062 bill, which was defeated when 27 Republicans voted against it.\u200d He voted in favor of a stop-gap funding\u2063 bill that included\u200c spending\u200c cuts and increased\u2063 border security but was \u2063defeated\u2063 by 21 Republicans. He voted for Mr. McCarthy 15 times in the January speaker\u2019s race and voted against his ouster \u2062in October.<\/p>\n<p>Although Mr. Johnson has strong\u2064 convictions, \u200bhe seems to \u200backnowledge the need to choose one\u2019s battles and occasionally compromise.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding a national abortion ban, he said on Oct.\u2064 26 that there \u2062is &#8220;no national consensus for the people on what to do\u200b with that issue\u2063 on a federal level for\u200c certain.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On the\u2062 topic of same-sex\u200b marriage, Mr. Johnson said, &#8220;I respect \u200bthe rule of law and also genuinely love all people, regardless of their lifestyle choices.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2023\/10\/27\/id5518539-3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">Republican lawmakers are focused\u2064 on more pressing issues right now, such \u2062as the Israel\u2013Hamas war, Russia&#8217;s invasion of Ukraine, the fentanyl crisis in \u2064the United States, and communist China&#8217;s aggressive behavior, Mr. Johnson \u2063said. <\/p>\n<h2>Test Cases<\/h2>\n<p>Given that the new speaker has held the job for less \u2064than a week, his ability \u200dto hold the\u2062 various elements of the Republican conference together has not yet been tested. (BRENDAN SMIALOWSKI\/AFP via\u2063 Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cCan he hold tough and force them to take an Israel bill\u2064 first, and then come back and\u2064 do the\u2062 other two?\u201d Mr.\u200b Gingrich said. \u201cThese should be three different bills &#8230; and \u200deach should be subjected to a different standard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With government funding \u200dset to run out on Nov. 17, completing the\u200c appropriations process will be another challenge to his leadership. The speaker has said he intends to pass the remaining spending\u2064 bills through the House and then \u2063negotiate \u2063with the \u200cSenate from\u2064 \u201ca position of strength.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, he left open the possibility \u200bthat a second stop-gap\u200d funding bill may be needed. The first such bill led to the ouster\u200d of Mr. McCarthy.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2023\/10\/27\/id5518543-4.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI think \u2064some of the most colorful\u200b conservatives in our conference have indicated that they will provide Speaker Johnson quite a little \u200bbit more flexibility than was given to \u2062Speaker McCarthy,\u201d\u2064 Mr. Dusty Johnson said. \u201cMike\u2064 Johnson is going to have \u200ca real opportunity to bring this \u2063team together and get\u2064 some \u200cconservative wins.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At some\u2064 point, that unity will be tested, maybe by the question \u200dof additional aid \u200bfor Ukraine, which some House Republicans\u2063 are skeptical of.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo get a Ukrainian aid bill through, \u200dthey\u2019re going\u2062 to have to have Democratic votes,\u201d Mr. Gingrich said. \u201cHow does the right react\u2063 at that point? &#8230; Do \u2062they \u200boperate as a party, or do\u200b they fragment again? Steve Scalise (R-La.), who is a close ally of the new speaker. \u200b\u201cHe understands that in order to make a\u2062 difference\u2063 and achieve conservative principles, you have to be able to get things \u200cdone and actually pass legislation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaker Johnson\u2019s reputation as a Trump \u200bloyalist has also been \u2064questioned by some on the right, who argue that his conservative credentials are not strong enough. They\u200d point to his support for \u2062a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/will-maga-mike-succeed-as-house-speaker\/\" title=\"Can 'MAGA Mike' be a successful House Speaker?\">bipartisan criminal justice\u200b reform bill<\/a> in 2018, which was backed by then-President Trump but opposed by many conservatives.<\/p>\n<p>However, supporters \u2062argue that his legislative track record proves his commitment to conservative values. They highlight his work on pro-life issues, religious liberty, and tax reform.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMike Johnson has been a reliable and effective leader in advancing the conservative agenda,\u201d said Rep.
