It declares that it is the policy of the United \u2064States to hold \u2063China\u2062 accountable for human rights abuses, using both economic levers and\u200d through trade \u2064negotiations.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.budd.senate.gov\/2023\/10\/27\/budd-tillis-to-introduce-bill-to-combat-persecution-of-religious-groups-in-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to<\/a> an Oct. 27 press release, \u200dthe legislation would ensure U.S. trade negotiations\u2064 with China include conditions on protecting religious freedom, continue to designate China as a\u2064 \u201ccountry of particular concern\u201d \u2062for religious freedom, and \u200chold Chinese officials responsible for gross \u2062human rights violations.\n  <\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe\u2063 Chinese government\u2062 has an abysmal human rights \u2064record and has persecuted \u200cits citizens for\u2062 practicing their own religious beliefs for \u2063far \u200btoo long,\u201d \u2062Mr.\u2063 Tillis said in a statement accompanying the bill\u2019s introduction. \u201cThe United States should work to hold China accountable and take China\u2019s blatant disregard\u200c for religious freedom into \u200bconsideration when conducting any future business or trade negotiations.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"shortcode post-related-videos\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"post-figure\" style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>  Sen. Among them \u2062is\u2062 Pastor John Cao,\u2063 a \u2062U.S. permanent\u200c resident from Greensboro, North Carolina, who was sentenced to seven \u2064years in prison in \u2062China \u200bin \u2062March 2018 under\u200c \u201ccontrived \u200dcharges of organizing illegal border crossings.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">Another name\u2063 mentioned in the bill is Pastor Wang Yi, who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/china\/chinese-court-sentences-prominent-church-pastor-to-nine-years-in-jail-for-subversion-3188317\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sentenced<\/a> to 9 years in China in December 2019 on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscirf.gov\/religious-prisoners-conscience\/forb-victims-database\/wang-yi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">charges<\/a> of \u201cillegal business activity\u201d and \u201cinciting subversion of state \u200bpower,\u201d the latter\u2064 a catch-all charge the \u200dChinese regime often uses against dissidents.<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">China has arbitrarily \u2062detained more than 1 million Uyghurs and \u2062other Muslim minorities in China\u2019s far-western Xinjiang region, the bill says, before noting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/opinion\/un-report-on-human-rights-abuses-in-xinjiang-is-a-clarion-call-to-action-4725190\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two laws<\/a> that have come into effect \u2064in\u2064 recent\u2063 years\u2014the\u200c Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act and the Uyghur \u2062Forced Labor Prevention Act.<\/div>\n<div class=\"post-figure\" style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>  Falun Gong adherents take part in\u2063 a rally to\u200c mark the 24th anniversary of the Chinese regime\u2019s persecution\u2063 of\u200b the spiritual discipline at\u2063 the National \u2064Mall in Washington\u200b on July 20, 2023. Since the\u200c CCP launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/china\/washington-rally-calls-for-end-to-ccps-24-year-persecution-of-falun-gong-5412077\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">systematic elimination campaign<\/a> in 1999, millions of\u200c Falun Gong practitioners have been\u2063 detained inside prisons, labor camps, and other\u2062 facilities, with hundreds of thousands tortured \u200cwhile incarcerated, <a href=\"https:\/\/faluninfo.net\/key-statistics-related-to-falun-gong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a> the Falun Dafa Information Center.<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">Minghui.org, a U.S. website tracking China\u2019s persecution of Falun Gong, reported\u2062 at least <a href=\"https:\/\/en.minghui.org\/html\/articles\/2023\/1\/7\/206074.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">172<\/a> incidents of Falun Gong practitioners being persecuted to death in 2022. For the\u200d first six months of \u2062this year, the website\u2063 reported at least another\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/en.minghui.org\/html\/articles\/2023\/7\/18\/210362.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">120 deaths<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">In July, Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.) and Sen.
