Although Case Western&#8217;s law school ranked 144 out of 200, making it the second least-white law school in the state of Ohio, deans Jessica Berg and Michael Scharf told students they should not be satisfied.<\/p>\n<div class=\"posts-content__category-widget md:hidden -ml-4 -mr-4 my-8 px-4 py-6 bg-gray-100\">\n<h4 class=\"mt-0 text-red-600 font-medium font-sans uppercase\">Recent Stories in Campus<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"list-none p-0\">\n<li class><a class=\"text-black block mb-3 pb-3 border-b border-white\" href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/campus\/law-school-deans-chastise-student-body-as-too-white\/\"><strong>Law School Deans Chastise Student Body as Too White<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li class><a class=\"text-black block mb-3 pb-3 border-b border-white\" href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/campus\/president-of-taxpayer-funded-antiracist-group-funneled-nearly-300k-to-husbands-law-firm\/\"><strong>President of Taxpayer-Funded Antiracist Group Funneled Nearly $300K to Husband&#8217;s Law Firm<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li class><a class=\"text-black block mb-3 pb-3 border-b border-white\" href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/courts\/supreme-court-rules-in-favor-of-student-punished-for-religious-speech\/\"><strong>Supreme Court Rules in Favor of Student Punished for Religious Speech<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;First, we should <em>not<\/em> be satisfied with the diversity of our student body, even on the measures used in this study,&#8221; Berg and Scharf said. &#8220;It does not mean we have an equitable number of students who identify as Black, Native American, Latinx, Asian American, Pacific Islander, or other under-represented groups.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The percentage of minority students in the school&#8217;s first-year law classes, however, exceeded the percentage of nationwide minority applicants by 13 percent. Case Western has increased the percentage of first-year law students &#8220;who do not identify as white&#8221; by 11 percent since 2004, the deans said in the email.<\/p>\n<p>The Whitest Law Schools in America <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2021\/03\/the-whitest-law-schools-in-america-2021\/?rf=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> was released on March 9 by retired Dayton University law professor Vernellia Randall. The study examines the &#8220;whiteness&#8221; of America&#8217;s law schools based on their &#8220;total whiteness score&#8221; and the &#8220;excess whiteness&#8221; of first-year law classes compared to the application pool and state demographics.<\/p>\n<p>Berg and Scharf said in a joint statement to the <em>Free Beacon<\/em> that they are hopeful the study will push the law school to take further action.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are committed to diversity and inclusion in all aspects of our law school community and know that we still have work to do in this area,&#8221; the deans said. &#8220;This study draws attention to one measure, but its greater impact may be to help reinforce the need for additional conversations and initiatives.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Berg and Scharf wrote in a September 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/case.edu\/law\/sites\/case.edu.law\/files\/2020-06\/dean%20statment.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a> that they felt &#8220;mobilized&#8221; by &#8220;incidents of racism and police brutality&#8221; to make a push for racial justice at Case Western.<\/p>\n<p>Those initiatives are detailed in a <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1kaSVZVhRjdtsLAH9CsOE0yYNhLmy9OzPZgT4yfEtt0Q\/edit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">document<\/a> on &#8220;Race and Justice&#8221; at Case Western Reserve University, which the deans shared with the <em>Free Beacon<\/em>. The initiatives outline how the deans have tried to &#8220;integrate racial justice more comprehensively&#8221; into the law school&#8217;s curriculum.
