The company plans to use this time to examine its processes, systems, and tools. The National Highway Traffic ‌Safety Administration (NHTSA) previously opened a⁢ formal safety probe into Cruise following three crashes where its vehicles were struck from behind after braking suddenly.

In an ‌October 20 letter made ‍public on ⁣Thursday, the NHTSA disclosed that it⁢ was seeking additional information about five new crash reports involving Cruise vehicles that braked⁤ without any obstacles ahead. The agency expressed concerns that such⁣ hard braking behavior could result in⁣ collisions with other vehicles.

Cruise has assured that it is cooperating with the ongoing‍ investigation and welcomes ⁢NHTSA’s ‌questions regarding its safety record and operations. The NHTSA⁣ is separately investigating whether Cruise⁤ is taking adequate precautions to ⁣protect pedestrians with its autonomous robotaxis.

This is not the first‍ time the DMV has taken action ⁢against Cruise. In August, the department directed the company to remove half of its driverless ⁤vehicles following another crash. The⁢ DMV argued that Cruise’s⁢ vehicles may lack the ability to respond appropriately during incidents⁢ involving pedestrians.

Cruise denied these allegations, stating that it‌ had⁢ submitted complete video footage multiple times to the DMV. The ⁣company remains committed to addressing these concerns and‍ ensuring the safety of its autonomous vehicles.

In conclusion,⁢ the suspension of General Motors’ driverless car unit Cruise’s operations ⁤in California is a significant setback for the company. However,⁤ it ⁢provides an opportunity for Cruise to reassess its processes and rebuild public trust.
