People online claimed the name stereotyped darker skin tones, so Unilever changed the name to \u201cGlow &amp; Lovely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company last year also had to pull advertising from its TRESemm\u00e9 brand in South Africa, after consumers complained that the marketing campaign included pictures of African black hair described as \u201cfrizzy and dull\u201d alongside pictures of a white woman\u2019s hair described as \u201cnormal,\u201d Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/global-race-safrica-unilever\/unilever-south-africa-takes-further-steps-after-racist-tresemm-advert-idUSKBN26303O\">reported<\/a> in September.<\/p>\n<p>Further, Unilever in 2017 angered social media users for a Dove body wash ad that featured a \u201cblack woman removing her top to reveal a white woman,\u201d Reuters reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that removing \u2018normal\u2019 alone will not fix the problem, but we believe it is an important step towards a more inclusive definition of beauty,\u201d Sunny Jain, president of Unilever\u2019s beauty and personal care division, told the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>There doesn\u2019t appear to be any backlash that caused the current move by Unilever to remove the word \u201cnormal\u201d from its packaging, but a poll conducted by the company that surveyed 10,000 people found global support for removing the word.<\/p>\n<p>The poll found that more than 50% of respondents said using the word \u201cnormal\u201d to describe hair or skin led to people feeling excluded. A full 70% of respondents claimed use of the word had a negative impact on consumers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe company also said it would stop digitally altering body shape, size, proportion and skin tones of models it uses in its own advertisements, or those of its paid influencers across all its brands, a move that started with the Dove brand in 2018,\u201d Reuters reported.<\/p>\n<p>Inclusivity is the latest buzz word gripping companies and organizations in America. In mid-February, The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/u-s-navy-inclusion-and-diversity-report-includes-pledge-to-advocate-for-and-acknowledge-all-intersectional-identities\">reported<\/a> that the U.S. Navy had published a report on \u201cInclusion and Diversity,\u201d which included a pledge to \u201cadvocate for and acknowledge\u201d all \u201cintersectional identities.\u201d The pledge states:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>As a key member of Task Force One Navy I will invest the time, attention and empathy required to analyze and evaluate Navywide issues related to racism, sexism, ableism and other structural and interpersonal biases.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>I pledge to be actively inclusive in the public and private spheres where I live and work, and proactively encourage others to do the same.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>I pledge to advocate for and acknowledge all lived experiences and intersectional identities of every Sailor in the Navy.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>I pledge to engage in ongoing self-reflection, education and knowledge sharing to better myself and my communities.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>I pledge to be an example in establishing healthy, inclusive and team-oriented environments.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>I pledge to constructively share all experiences and information gained from activities above to inform the development of Navywide reforms.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In January, House Democrats <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/proposed-house-rules-strike-non-inclusive-words-father-son-sister-mccarthy-responds\">announced<\/a> they would remove allegedly non-inclusive words like \u201cfather,\u201d \u201cmother,\u201d \u201cson,\u201d \u201cdaughter,\u201d \u201cbrother,\u201d \u201csister,\u201d etc. and replace them with \u201cparent,\u201d \u201cchild,\u201d \u201csibling,\u201d and others.
