Kevin McCarthy\u2019s removal\u200d as speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Her opponents pounced.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<h2><strong>Democrats \u200dEye District<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Dems Consider Defeating Chavez-DeRemer \u2062a Top Priority<\/p>\n<p>Democrats, both statewide\u2062 and\u2063 nationally, consider defeating Ms. Chavez-DeRemer a top\u200b priority. They\u200c see her as \u2062vulnerable and the race as a critical opportunity\u2064 to flip the U.S. House blue in \u20622024.<\/p>\n<p>The Congresswoman is one of \u2062a dozen Republicans elected last year in districts that were won by \u200cPresident Joe Biden in 2020. Oregon\u2019s District 5 went for \u200bMr. Biden\u200c by nine points.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats \u200boutnumber Republicans in the district, which \u2064stretches \u2062from the \u2062central Oregon city of Bend to east Portland.<\/p>\n<p>Voter registration\u200c in \u200bthis district, anchored by Clackamas \u200cand Deschutes counties (home to about two-thirds \u200cof its voters) with portions\u2063 of \u2062four others, leans Democratic by 5 percentage points.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. \u200dChavez-DeRemer is preparing \u2063for her \u200b2024 reelection campaign and has \u2063already raised $636,051.<\/p>\n<p>She faces a\u2062 crowded field of Democrat primary candidates who are working \u200bvigorously to\u200b tie\u200c her to the far right wing of her\u200d party.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<h2><strong>Primary \u200bCandidates Speak Out<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>State Rep. Janelle Bynum, a Democrat primary candidate for \u200dCD5, issued\u2063 a statement shortly after Oct. 25\u2019s speaker vote.<\/p>\n<p>She described Mr. Johnson as a \u201cMAGA extremist\u201d \u200band noted that he supported \u2063a national \u2064abortion\u2063 ban,\u200c argued for same-sex marriage bans, and\u2063 \u201ctried to overturn\u2063 the 2020 election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Bynum claimed she is \u201cuniquely positioned to defeat\u200d Chavez-DeRemer, having bested\u200d her\u201d in state house \u2064races in 2016 and 2018. \u2064She also leads the primary field with the most cash on hand.<\/p>\n<p>On Oct. 25, Oregon\u2019s Democrat Gov. Tina\u2064 Kotek \u2062threw her support behind \u200dMs. Bynum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho we send to Congress to represent Oregon is \u2064incredibly\u2062 important, especially now when our values are under attack at the federal level,\u201d Ms. Kotek said in a statement announcing her endorsement.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Kotek \u2062is the \u2063latest high-profile \u200dOregon Democrat to get\u200b behind Ms. Bynum, joining\u2062 U.S. Reps. Andrea Salinas and Suzanne Bonamici, state Treasurer Tobias Read, the Congressional\u2063 Black Caucus PAC, the \u2063New\u2062 Dem\u2064 Action Fund, several \u200bstate senators, and 21 Democrat state representatives.<\/p>\n<p>Polling and fundraising show a close race between Ms. Bynum and progressive candidate Jamie McLeod-Skinner, the \u2063central Oregon attorney who narrowly\u2063 lost to Ms. Chavez-DeRemer last year.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. McLeod-Skinner also \u2063decried Ms.\u2062 Chavez-DeRemer\u2019s speaker vote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLori Chavez-DeRemer is \u200dnow directly tied to [Speaker Johnson\u2019s] dangerous \u200band extreme \u200bagenda,\u201d she wrote in an Oct. 25 press release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile \u200cI\u2019m extremely disappointed and troubled by the Congresswoman\u2019s vote, I\u2019m not surprised given \u200bher \u2064record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the 2022 primary race, President Biden endorsed Ms. McLeod-Skinner\u2019s opponent, incumbent Democrat Rep. Kurt Schrader, who \u200bhad held the seat since\u2063 2009. Despite the support, Mr. Schrader went on to lose the primary to Ms.\u200c McLeod-Skinner.<\/p>\n<p>In \u200dthe general election, \u200cthe Republican Party Super PAC spent $5.3 million\u200c to help Ms. Chavez-DeRemer while the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spent just\u2062 $1.85 million to boost Ms. McLeod-Skinner.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Chavez DeRemer won by just 2 percentage points.<\/p>\n<p>Primary candidate\u2062 Lynn Peterson also spoke out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWill Rep. Chavez-DeRemer rubber-stamp the nihilistic\u200c MAGA agenda and vote to\u200d put the extreme-right Freedom Caucus \u200bin charge?\u201d she asked. \u201cHer\u2064 constituents will be\u2064 watching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Attacks on Mr. \u200dJohnson\u2019s election\u200d poured in from other leading\u2062 Oregon Democrats as well.<\/p>\n<p>Rep.\u2063 Andrea Salinas, the\u2063 first-term Democrat congresswoman\u200b representing the state\u2019s new 6th \u200cDistrict, referred to Mr. Johnson as an \u201cextremist who voted \u2062to overturn the 2020 election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added that\u2064 she\u200d was \u201chopeful\u201d that Mr. Johnson would try to work\u200c with Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2062 the House \u2062GOP caved to\u200c MAGA pressure and elected a speaker who sought to overturn \u2062the results of the \u200d2020\u2063 election, opposes LGBT rights, \u2064would criminalize abortion, denies climate change, and worked \u200bto cut critical programs like Social \u2064Security, Medicare, and Medicaid,\u201d state Rep. She has also criticized Ms. Chavez-DeRemer for her \u2062support of Speaker Johnson, calling \u200chim a \u201cdangerous choice\u201d and accusing Ms. Chavez-DeRemer of aligning herself\u200b with the extreme right wing of the Republican Party.<\/p>\n<p>With such fierce competition \u200cin the Democratic primary, it is clear that defeating Ms. Chavez-DeRemer is a top priority for Oregon Democrats. They\u200d see this race as a \u200ccritical opportunity to strengthen their majority in the U.S. House and \u2063advance their progressive agenda. The endorsements and fundraising efforts that have poured in \u2062for both Ms. Bynum and Ms. McLeod-Skinner demonstrate the determination of the Democratic Party to unseat the incumbent congresswoman.<\/p>\n<p>However,\u200b Ms. Chavez-DeRemer has proven to be a formidable opponent in past elections, winning \u200csupport from both Republicans and Democrats in her district. \u2062Her focus on\u2062 pragmatic legislation \u200cand her bipartisan approach have resonated with \u200cvoters, and \u2064she has been successful in a district that leans slightly Democratic.<\/p>\n<p>As the race\u2063 heats up, it remains to be seen whether the attacks and fundraising\u2063 efforts against \u200bMs. Chavez-DeRemer \u2064will \u2064translate into electoral success for her opponents.
