Kevin\u2063 McCarthy (R-Calif.), on Oct. 3.<\/p>\n<p>Now third in line for the presidency, Mr. Johnson is a relative unknown to most Americans.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<h2>1. He\u2019s a Native of Louisiana<\/h2>\n<p>The representative of Louisiana\u2019s fourth congressional district, Mr. Johnson was born \u2062on Jan. 30, 1972. He is 51 years old.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, part of the district he now represents, Mr. Johnson is the oldest son of\u200b Jeanne Johnson and firefighter James Patrick Johnson. His Father Died \u2062Days Before His Election<\/h2>\n<p>During his speech accepting the House&#8217;s blessing\u2064 for him as its\u2062 56th speaker, Mr. Johnson spoke about the loss of \u200bhis\u2064 father \u2063just before his election.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI lost my\u200c dad to cancer three days before I got elected to Congress,\u201d he said.\u2062 \u201cThree days. And he wanted to be\u2062 there at my election night so badly.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Mr. Johnson noted in his speech that he was the first college \u200bgraduate in his\u200b family, adding \u200cthat &#8220;this was a big deal to him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>10. He Entered House GOP Leadership in 2021<\/h2>\n<p>In January 2021, House Republicans selected Mr. Johnson to serve as vice chair of the House Republican Conference.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>He continued \u200dto serve in that role, as a deputy to \u2063House Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), until his accession to speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-N.Y.) is currently \u2062vying to take the position left vacant by Mr. Johnson.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>He has also served as \u2063an assistant House Republican whip.<\/p>\n<h2>11. He Was\u200b Chairman of a Constitution-Oriented Subcommittee<\/h2>\n<p>Since the start of the 118th Congress, Mr. Johnson has served as the chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and Limited Government.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The panel, previously called the Subcommittee on the Constitution,\u200c Civil Rights, and \u2062Civil Liberties, has jurisdiction over matters related to constitutional rights, constitutional amendments, federal civil rights, voting rights, claims against the United States, \u00a0ethics in government, and other related issues.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Following tradition, as the newly elected speaker, Mr. Johnson will step\u200b down from each of his committee\u200c assignments.<\/p>\n<h2>13. He \u2063Voted \u2062for \u200dthe Tax Cuts\u200d and Jobs Act<\/h2>\n<p>Later the same year, Mr. Johnson supported a Republican\u200c reconciliation bill encouraged by President Donald Trump to cut taxes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Unlike the measure to repeal Obamacare, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 did make \u2062it across the finish line, eventually being signed into law by President Trump.<\/p>\n<h2>15. He Opposed the Certification of the 2020 Election<\/h2>\n<p>Like\u200d many other Republicans in the House, Mr. Johnson had concerns that \u2064the 2020 election was \u2064marred \u2064by widespread fraud.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>He joined 147 other\u200b Republicans in refusing to\u200b certify the results of the contest.<\/p>\n<h2>16. Key Architect of Electoral College Objections<\/h2>\n<p>Prior to\u2064 the certification of electoral votes on Jan. 6, 2021, Mr. Johnson reportedly was a key architect of arguments\u2064 against certifying the results.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Rather than making wide-reaching claims about fraud in the 2020 election,\u200d Mr. Johnson, in an effort \u200cto get colleagues on board, reportedly cited procedural concerns about how the 2020 election was conducted.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that while the Constitution requires that \u200dstate legislatures choose the time, place, and manner of presidential\u200d contests, this wasn&#8217;t how things were handled in 2020. He Opposed Establishing \u2063the Jan. 6 Panel<\/h2>\n<p>Like all\u2064 but 35 House Republicans at the time, Mr. Johnson opposed the establishment of\u200d the so-called Jan. 6 Committee, which was ultimately organized and conducted without any Republican-chosen members.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>He is staunchly pro-life.<\/p>\n<p>He was a\u200b supporter of the Supreme Court&#8217;s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women&#8217;s Health Organization, which overturned Roe v. Wade and the federally recognized right to an abortion.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>In the past, Mr. Johnson \u2063has supported legislation to impose a \u200cfederal abortion ban at both the 15-week mark and at fertilization.<\/p>\n<h2>19.\u200b He Voted to\u2062 Increase the Debt Ceiling<\/h2>\n<p>Mr. Johnson supported Mr. McCarthy\u2019s deal\u2064 with President Joe Biden that would raise\u2064 the debt ceiling in exchange for discretionary spending cuts \u2062over time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Though \u2064some conservatives opposed the package\u2014brought to the floor as the Fiscal Responsibility Act\u2014as insufficient, Mr. Johnson supported the deal with the White\u2062 House.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>&#8220;I voted in favor of the Fiscal Responsibility Act this evening to prevent\u200b the first-ever default on our country\u2019s debt. We are in a dangerous time, we were presented with only one bill, and we simply had no choice,&#8221; he\u2064 said in a statement.<\/p>\n<h2>20. He Opposes Ukraine\u2064 Aid<\/h2>\n<p>He has opposed U.S. funding for Ukraine\u2014except for the first aid package. It\u2019s unclear \u200dif he\u2019ll carry this attitude with him as he takes up the speakership.<\/p>\n<h2>21.
