Imagine one of your in-laws asking questions about the color of your unborn baby\u2019s skin,\u201d Lemon began, playing a clip of the interview.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"9.4770992366412\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Racism is racism. Doesn&#8217;t matter whether you live in a shack or a palace.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>CNN&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/donlemon?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@donlemon<\/a> discusses the interview Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, gave to Oprah Winfrey. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/f57RCF5Lba\">https:\/\/t.co\/f57RCF5Lba<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/wBFE2xlHxD\">pic.twitter.com\/wBFE2xlHxD<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 CNN (@CNN) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CNN\/status\/1369149516771856388?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 9, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cImagine people talking that way about your baby, before your baby\u2019s even born.\u201d Lemon said. \u201cIt\u2019s awful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBut sadly, it\u2019s not shocking. Not at all,\u201d Lemon continued. \u201cNot to people of color. I don\u2019t think anybody who watched Harry and Meghan\u2019s interview with Oprah or who watched how Meghan was treated, how people talked about her, could really be surprised about that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cRemember the racist lie about Meghan being almost \u201cstraight outta Compton?\u201d Lemon asked. \u201cRight? That\u2019s the Daily Mail. Straight outta Compton? Racism is racism. Doesn\u2019t matter whether you live in a shack or a palace. Prince Harry says that he will never share that conversation about his son, but he tells Oprah it wasn\u2019t with the Queen or Prince Phillip.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>So, let\u2019s be clear about this,\u201d Lemon said later. \u201cThe monarchy, the British monarchy is a caste system, a hierarchy based on blood lines. Think about that. And then ask yourself again if it is a surprise that they wondered, you know, what would Baby Archie\u2019s skin color be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSkin color has really been whispered about, talked about right out loud for centuries. As I just talked about Chris \u2014 talked to Chris about, I write about it in my book \u2018This is a Fire.\u2019 What I say to my friends about racism. And I just want to share the kind of words that I\u2019ve heard and then I wrote about,\u201d Lemon said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI say people who were three quarters black were griffes. Mulattoes were half black, quadroons a quarter, octoroons an eight, and so on, down to the 164th black sangmelee.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThese anachronistic terms offend our ears now, but the old paper bag sliding valuation of skin tone versus stature still whispers in the subconscious mind of the job interviewer and the job applicant, the loan officer, and the loan applicant, the teacher and the student, the cop and the citizen,\u201d Lemon claimed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe\u2019d like to think that we have moved beyond all that, but have we really? Now we can add, duchess, princess and prince to that list,\u201d Lemon continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cMeghan and Harry\u2019s story is a story of how hard it can be to change institutions, to change societies and cultures. How hard it is to talk about race sometimes. Now, we haven\u2019t heard from the royal family since Meghan and Harry\u2019s interview with Oprah aired there tonight. But some people will say that we haven\u2019t heard from the other side. But they didn\u2019t listen to one of their own. They let him go.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Earlier that day, Don Lemon spoke with Brianna Keilar on CNN.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBrianna, also, people say we haven\u2019t heard from the other side. What\u2019s the other side going to say? They\u2019re going to say, \u2018Of course we\u2019re not racist,\u2019 or whatever,\u201d Lemon said. \u201cBut what did they do? Think about their actions. They did not stand up for their own because their own was married to a black woman, had a black child. They didn\u2019t listen to him inside the Royal Family, they let him go, they let him leave the country, they wouldn\u2019t come to terms with what they wanted to do.
