Gavin Newsom headed off to his\u2062 week-long trip to\u200c communist\u2064 China. As I\u2062 have\u2063 reported in The Epoch Times for more than a year, he\u2019s obviously running for\u2062 president, \u2063if not in \u200b2024, then 2028. With this trip, he\u2019s \u200dburnishing his scant foreign-policy credentials.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s\u200c significant that\u2063 he picked \u2064China\u200c for \u2064this major foreign trip.\u200b He could have stayed in\u200b Israel a \u200dweek. Or after his stop there, he could have visited U.S.\u200d troops in Syria and\u2062 Iraq, or the U.S.S. Ford and \u200bU.S.S. \u200bEisenhower strike groups. That betrays the agreement Beijing had \u2063with the United Kingdom at the time the crown\u200d colony was \u2062\u201cgiven\u201d to\u200b the communists. (Wang \u200bZhao\/AFP via Getty \u200dImages)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Even fellow Democrats\u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2023\/10\/22\/newsoms-hong-kong-travel-draws-fire-00122866\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">attacked<\/a> Mr. Newsom \u200dfor failing \u200dto bring up human rights\u200b in Hong Kong, his first\u2062 stop on the trip.\u2063 He ought to\u200b \u201cspeak very clearly against the repression of the Hong Kong people,\u201d said Sen. Jeff \u2063Merkley (D-Ore.),\u200d co-chair of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China. \u201cOtherwise it \u200bdoes great damage because it\u2063 looks like the Chinese\u200b repression is accepted and \u2063we cannot allow that to be\u200b the case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The excuse came \u200din a \u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2023\/10\/23\/governor-newsom-starts-weeklong-international-trip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> Mr. \u200dNewsom\u2019s office put on his official website: \u201cHONG KONG\u2014Governor Gavin Newsom on Monday\u200c started his\u200c weeklong international trip\u2063 with a stop at\u200b Hong Kong University.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernor Newsom\u2019s trip is focused on \u200dadvancing \u2063concrete \u200dclimate collaborations with key national and subnational partners, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/carney-dont-fall-for-the-ludicrous-saule-omarova-cover-up-she-is-too-dangerous-to-confirm\/\" title=\"Carney: Don't Fall For The Ludicrous Saule Omarova Cover-Up, She Is Too Dangerous To Confirm\">promoting economic development<\/a> and tourism, and encouraging a cultural exchange between countries. Over\u200b the next six days, Governor Newsom and his delegation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2023\/10\/18\/governor-newsom-goes-to-china-next-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">will travel through\u200c China<\/a>, visit key demonstration\u200d sites \u200cand meet with leaders who share \u2064California\u2019s commitment to \u200daddressing\u2062 our global climate crisis while fostering a lowcarbon, green growth agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By \u201cdemonstration sites,\u201d Mr. Newsom\u2019s\u2064 statement means\u200d demonstrations \u2063of China\u2019s green technology developments, not the sites\u2064 of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/us-lawmakers-nominate-hong-kong-pro-democracy-movement-for-nobel-peace-prize-3684550\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">freedom\u2062 demonstrations<\/a> in Hong Kong in 2019\u20132020, which led\u2063 to at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/07\/21\/asia\/hong-kong-deaths-suicide-dark-intl-hnk\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">four deaths<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The statement continued: \u201cAt Hong Kong University, the Governor participated in a fireside chat with Professor Peng Gong, Vice President and Pro Vice Chancellor of\u200b the University. Hong Kong University is a premier research institution and, much like the University of \u200bCalifornia system, plays a significant role in shaping government policies. The Governor spoke to \u2062the importance of\u2064 the university system, and the \u200dhope he has in \u200dthe next\u2062 generation exercising\u2063 their capacity to make\u200d a difference in the climate crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Is\u2062 that another joke? Hong Kong doesn\u2019t\u2064 \u201cshape\u201d policies for itself\u2014Beijing does. Mr. Newsom himself said: \u201cWe must radically change \u2063the way we produce and consume energy, and it won\u2019t be enough if we act alone. This is \u200ba global \u2063crisis \u200band it requires a\u200b global response.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe\u200c long-standing partnership\u2014and competition\u2014between California and China has led to measurable progress: electrification\u2062 of ports, cleaning our air of smog and pollution, and innovating new technologies that build economies. (Ringo Chiu\/AFP \u2063via \u2063Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Pro-Freedom Groups Protest Newsom<\/h2>\n<p>Not mollified were more than\u2064 50 groups\u2063 advocating democracy and freedom in Hong Kong and the\u200c mainland. \u201cA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/f\/?id=0000018b-4de2-ddd1-a3bb-6deed97f0001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">joint statement<\/a> by Hong\u2064 Kongers, Chinese, Taiwanese, Tibetans, \u2063Uyghurs, and allies\u201d announced: \u201cWe are deeply \u2062disappointed\u2064 by\u2063 Governor \u200bGavin Newsom\u2019s decision\u200b to explicitly\u200d turn away from engaging on critical human rights issues\u2014given \u200bthe deteriorating civil liberties and freedoms in Hong\u200c Kong, \u2064the \u200barbitrary detainment of the Uyghur people in East Turkistan, the escalating human rights situation in \u200coccupied Tibet, and tightening grasp \u2062on fundamental freedoms\u2063 by\u200c the Chinese \u2062government\u2014in his \u200cupcoming \u200btrip to Hong Kong and mainland China. Human rights should never be dismissed or sidelined, especially by an\u2064 elected leader traveling\u2062 internationally. As the first high-profile U.S. official to visit Hong Kong\u2062 since the \u200dNational Security Law (NSL), Gov. Newsom\u2019s poor\u200d messaging sets\u200d a problematic tone for future\u200c diplomatic engagement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The NSL was imposed in Hong Kong in\u2062 2020 to further repress its once-free people and prevent new\u200b demonstrations.\u2062 Critics\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-china-52765838\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called<\/a> \u200bit \u201cthe end of Hong Kong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u200c protest \u200cstatement continued: \u201cWe question why \u2063Gov. Newsom has decided to \u2063travel to Hong Kong\u200d and mainland China at this time.\u2064 While he\u200c will ostensibly visit China for climate \u200cissues as\u200d a foreign dignitary, \u200bhe is pledging not to\u200b speak on connected concerns \u200dvital to \u2064his constituency.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2062 share his commitment to combating anti-Asian hate\u200d but fail to\u200c see\u2064 how meetings with officials of an authoritarian regime abroad achieve that stated objective. He should instead listen\u200b to his constituents who face both racism\u2064 here and\u2062 well-documented\u2062 instances of transnational repression directed by the Chinese Communist Party.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile he \u2063enjoys the\u2063 freedom and safety \u200bof visiting\u200b Hong Kong and\u2062 mainland\u2063 China, his constituents who are in exile cannot return home without being\u200b immediately detained. Among over\u2062 100,000 residents in\u2063 California born in Hong Kong, \u200bmany have family members\u2062 and friends threatened by\u200b the ongoing \u200cpolitical crackdown. As governor, he has a responsibility\u200b to\u2064 defend \u200bthe interests of his constituents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, he as a responsibility to represent all \u200c39 million Californians, because this state is supposed to be a world beacon of freedom. Mr. Newsom himself \u200dalways is talking about his California\u200b Way being a light unto the world.<\/p>\n<h2>BYD\u2019s Useless COVID Masks<\/h2>\n<p>Remember how during Mr. Newsom\u2019s mishandling of \u200cthe COVID-19 crisis he autocratically spent $1 billion\u200c of California taxpayers\u2019 money on masks\u2063 from China? The Los Angeles\u200d Times reported April 20, 2020: \u201cGov.\u2063 Gavin \u200dNewsom\u2018s decision to \u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2020-04-07\/california-gavin-newsom-200-million-masks-coronavirus-rachel-maddow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spend<\/a> \u200d almost $1 billion in \u200ctaxpayer\u200c funds to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gov-newsom-junket-appeases-communist-china\/\" title=\"Newsom's trip to China pleases communist regime.\">buy protective masks drew\u2064 national\u200b attention<\/a> as an aggressive move by California to\u2062 solve one of the most\u200c nagging problems of the \u2063coronavirus crisis.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-figure\" style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"aligncenter\"><figcaption>  A \u2062man wearing a face\u2062 mask walks past the BYD office in \u200bLos Angeles \u200con May 13,\u200d 2020. The governor\u2019s advisors\u200b have so far declined requests for information about the agreement with BYD, the Chinese \u200delectric \u200ccar\u200d manufacturer \u200chired to\u200d produce the masks, though the state \u2064has already wired the company the first installment of $495 million.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Epoch\u200b Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/newsoms-masks-fail-safety-standards-3344271\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> \u2063a\u200d month later, in \u2062May 2020: \u201cCalifornia\u200b Gov. Gavin Newsom\u2019s $1 billion deal with a \u2063Chinese company to produce protective \u2064masks during the height of the\u200c COVID-19 pandemic has soured, as the masks failed to meet national safety and\u2063 health standards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>California Globe <a href=\"https:\/\/californiaglobe.com\/articles\/little-scrutiny-two-years-after-gov-newsoms-odious-1b-china-byd-mask-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> \u2063 in May 2022: \u201cTwo years after Gov. Gavin Newsom\u2019s shady \u200dno-bid $1 billion N-95 mask deal\u2064 with newly formed BYD Mask company, there are still many questions surrounding the deals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGov. Gavin Newsom approved spending \u200c$1\u2063 billion \u2062of taxpayers funds on masks from Chinese company \u2063BYD, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-pushes-for-50-percent-electric-vehicle-sales-by-2030\/\" title=\"Biden Pushes for 50 Percent Electric Vehicle Sales by 2030\">electric bus maker<\/a> which started manufacturing N95 masks as the COVID pandemic\u200c hit, when\u2062 the original mask purchase\u2063 to Blue Flame fell apart\u2064 after a bank notified \u2063the governor that Blue Flame was only a\u2064 few days old.\u201d Since then\u2064 there has \u200bbeen no attempt to account\u200c for\u200b the $1\u200c billion.<\/p>\n<h2>Touring BYD\u2019s Electric Car \u200bFactory<\/h2>\n<p>Guess which\u2064 company he\u2064 visited once inside China on\u2062 his junket? <a href=\"https:\/\/redstate.com\/jenvanlaar\/2023\/10\/24\/gavin-newsom-pimps-chinese-electric-car-company-byd-the-same-company-he-awarded-a-1b-mask-contract-n2165480\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Headlined<\/a> Red State, \u201cGavin Newsom Pimps Chinese \u2063Electric Car \u2062Company BYD, \u2062the Same Company He Awarded a\u2064 $1B Mask Contract.\u201d The story: \u201cDuring \u2063his\u2062 trip to China to discuss climate \u200dchange (and \u2018combating xenophobia,\u2019 but nothing else),\u2062 California Gov.
