But the effective \u2063deficit was higher, and using a smaller number in headlines obscures the reality of our deficit problem.<\/p>\n<p>The accounting issue behind the discrepancy \u200dinvolves the government giveaway in the form of student \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/26\/how-joe-bidens-welfare-for-college-grads-will-stoke-inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">loan forgiveness<\/a>,\u201d which President Biden proposed last year. In June, the Supreme Court struck down\u200c this\u2063 program\u200b as\u2062 unconstitutional. However, \u2064the federal government recorded \u201csavings\u201d on its books of $321 billion\u2063 because the Biden administration could not spend this money on their giveaway.<\/p>\n<p>From an <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/BVLRF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">accounting standpoint<\/a>, Washington ran a roughly $1.4 trillion deficit in 2022 and a $1.7 \u200ctrillion deficit this year. But if you\u200d consider the\u2063 $321 billion it \u201cspent\u201d when the Biden administration first announced its \u201cforgiveness\u201d plan in 2022 and \u2063the\u200b $321 billion \u200cit \u201csaved\u201d when the Supreme Court struck that plan down, the\u200b federal government\u200d actually ran a deficit of $1 trillion in 2022 which jumped to $2 trillion in fiscal \u20632023. <\/p>\n<p>Removing \u200dthe accounting adjustments for a plan that (thankfully) never \u2062went \u200binto effect reveals just how much\u2063 the deficit has rebounded under Joe Biden\u2019s watch.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a94ec16ebc79de3efbbf0d03b55bd3e9 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a94ec16ebc79de3efbbf0d03b55bd3e9\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Inflation Means Higher Spending<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The \u2064Department of the Treasury\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/jy1829\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press release<\/a> regarding the budget\u2062 numbers attempted to \u2063highlight that revenue declined between 2022 and 2023.\u2064 The Biden administration views this \u2062decline as a sign for Congress to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/03\/10\/bidens-budget-breakdown-how-the-big-government-binge-overtaxes-overspends-and-overborrows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">raise more taxes<\/a> to lower the deficit.<\/p>\n<p>But the massive revenue spike in 2022 was in \u200cmany ways a one-off\u2062 sparked by\u200c monetary conditions.\u2063 The Federal Reserve\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/11\/17\/how-the-federal-reserve-keeps-stoking-inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">policy of printing money<\/a> throughout the Covid pandemic created bubbles in all sorts of asset classes, \u200bfrom the\u200b stock market to cryptocurrencies \u200band much more. \u200cWhen people sold their\u2063 (artificially inflated) assets, \u2062they incurred capital \u200cgains \u2063taxes, which provided a temporary boon to the Treasury.<\/p>\n<p>But this boon came with a downside as Federal Reserve money-printing and congressional over-spending <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/11\/17\/how-the-federal-reserve-keeps-stoking-inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stoked inflation<\/a>, causing federal \u200dspending to rise and exacerbate our deficit problems.<\/p>\n<p>The Treasury admits \u200dthat, excluding the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mary-vought-bidens-bailout-and-the-nationalization-of-higher-education\/\" title=\"Mary Vought: Biden\u2019s Bailout and the Nationalization of Higher Education\">student \u201cloan forgiveness<\/a>\u201d issue discussed above, non-interest outlays <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/jy1829\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rose<\/a> from 21.4 percent of the economy in fiscal year 2022\u2064 to 21.6 percent\u2063 of GDP in fiscal 2023.\u2064 That increase came in large \u2062part because higher inflation led \u200bto \u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/08\/16\/congressional-budget-review-shows-biden-drowning-americans-in-a-sea-of-red-ink\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more spending on inflation-indexed \u2063programs<\/a>,\u200d such as a higher cost-of-living adjustment for Social Security recipients.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1ba7e723932deb53c5ad8b89c17177fb fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1ba7e723932deb53c5ad8b89c17177fb\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fiscal Danger Ahead<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Inflation-increased spending portends major fiscal problems ahead. But because the latter number includes the phony savings from the striking down of\u200d \u201cloan forgiveness,\u201d\u2063 it understates \u200cthe depth of our deficit problem.<\/p>\n<p>For the federal government to run a deficit approaching 7 percent of its\u200d economy during a time of relative economic growth demonstrates \u2062a \u200ddangerous level of fiscal recklessness. <\/p>\n<p>Ironically, one of \u2062the other big sources of increased spending came\u2064 from higher interest payments,\u2062 reflecting both higher federal debt levels overall and the higher interest rates the Treasury is having to pay to those who own federal debt.<\/p>\n<p>Washington is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-silent-price-youll-pay-for-our-mounting-national-debt-federal-reserve-powell-doom-loop-interest-healthcare-11664484369\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rapidly approaching\u2064 the point<\/a> at which interest costs will become\u2062 one of the largest elements of the federal budget.
