Matt Gaetz claiming victory. Gaetz, a Florida Republican known for ⁢his conservative stance and ⁤opposition to‌ U.S. aid to Ukraine, orchestrated the removal of Kevin McCarthy as Speaker, claiming that ⁣McCarthy was not honest or conservative enough.

Taking the reins as the new Speaker is Mike Johnson, the chairman of the ‍Republican Study Committee and a fourth-term Louisiana Republican. Johnson succeeded where his three predecessors ⁤failed, ⁢as he did not face strong opposition from within the party. As one senior House⁢ Republican aide explained,‍ “no one hates‌ him enough to stop him.” However, Gaetz’s quest for victory does not end here.

Gaetz argued that a majority of Republicans in the ⁤House are against⁢ providing more money to Ukraine, citing the 117 Republicans who voted ⁢against a bill for $300 million worth‍ of assistance. He referred to the Hastert Rule, stating that any ⁣speaker⁢ should not bring legislation to ⁢the floor if it lacks the support of the majority of the⁤ majority. Despite his arguments, the‍ bill still passed with 311 votes in the House.

Gaetz also introduced an amendment to prohibit all aid to Ukraine, which received even ‌less support from House Republicans, with ⁤a vote of 339-93 against it. Interestingly, Johnson, ⁤the ⁤newly elected Speaker, voted in favor ‍of Gaetz’s ban. Senator Roger Wicker, the top Republican ‍on the ⁣Armed Services Committee, expressed⁤ support for aid to Ukraine,‍ emphasizing the importance of protecting American interests and devastating Russian military might.

Johnson, however,⁤ has a⁢ mixed record when it ⁤comes to military ⁤aid for Ukraine. He ‍initially voted in favor of a “lend-lease” program to arm Ukraine,‍ but ⁣subsequently voted against an aid bill⁢ for the country. Johnson argued at the time that the focus should be ⁤on addressing issues within the ‌United States, such as border security and struggling American families.

The intentions ⁣and policy preferences of the new Speaker, Johnson, remain uncertain. According to a senior Republican aide, it is yet to be seen how he will approach and influence Republican policies as Speaker, considering the power associated ⁣with the position.
